St. Bernards to host mini-conference for children with diabetes
The St. Bernards Diabetes Management Center will host a back-to-school mini-conference for children and adolescents who have diabetes on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The event is designed for diabetics, their parents and families and others who are interested in childhood diabetes.
To begin at 6 in the evening at St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 East Washington, Ave., the program will include separate sessions for youngsters and for adults. Young participants will hear from someone who has personal insight into the challenges of growing up with diabetes, Brick Smith, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator who works as a clinical consultant with Medtronic Diabetes.
Adults will hear a presentation by diabetes management consultant Mike Davis about the challenges and rewards of being a parent of a diabetic child. The Medtronic representative will speak on “Parenting a Child with Diabetes.”
Youngsters will be able to take part in a variety of activities, and both youngsters and parents can visit educational booths during breaks in the program. The event is expected to conclude by 8 p.m.
The St. Bernards Diabetes Management Center is the only such program in the area recognized by the American Diabetes Association for meeting stringent quality standards. Through that center specially trained and certified healthcare specialists help diabetics learn to help manage and control the disease.
Nearly 21 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and Centers for Disease Control information suggests that as many as one-third that number have diabetes but don’t know it yet. In Arkansas, nearly a quarter of a million residents are estimated to have diabetes … and throughout this country, the incidence of diabetes is rising.
Healthy snacks will be available, and door prizes will be awarded.
Participants should arrive by 5:45 p.m. to register for door prizes.
