Re: “Judge Griffen defends granting temporary restraining order in execution drug case, protesting death penalty

That post should be required reading for all who have spoken against Judge Griffen in recent days.

Re: “The carmageddons that didn't happen: Atlanta, LA, Minneapolis, Little Rock

I also read that MARTA ridership increased significantly after the fire. The maxim that "nobody rides public transit" tends to melt away when that mode becomes the more convenient method of getting from Point A to Point B.

Re: “U.S. Rep. Steve King is a racist. But he keeps getting re-elected

Great headline and commentary on steve king:
"Why Won't Steve King Assimilate and Embrace American Values?"

Re: “U.S. Rep. Steve King is a racist. But he keeps getting re-elected

Curry managed to get 37% against French Hill last year despite a non-existent campaign and no meaningful support from the bigger party apparatus. Her website redirected to a godaddy landing page 2 weeks before the election for crying out loud! What would the results look like if a real horse race developed in Arkansas's 2nd in 2018?

Oh, and to the original point of the post: Steve King is pond scum.

Re: “Ark. Tech students talk about sex? Cut off their money, Rep. Mary Bentley suggests

I use Bentley cups almost daily, and every time I take a sip of my beverage of choice I feel a faint and unpleasant twinge of guilt-by-association. On the one hand it's good to support an Arkansas business headed by someone whose views on the issues of the day generally differ from my own. On the other hand, she's always pulling judgmental crap like this just because someone's actions disagree with her delicate sensibilities.

Hopefully Jeremy Hutchinson's new bill will prevent this kind of meddling in the future. Folks wanting to teach and learn about sex deserve to be left alone in my book. The Mary Bentleys of the world can avert their gaze if they don't like it.

Re: “Alarm raised on Little Rock sewer bills by Andy Davis

"He emphasized that those annexed would pay sewer rates the same as others."

And there's the money shot, right at the end of the post. Developer takes raw land, pays for initial sewer installation, greatly increases the marketable value of the land, and sells parcels at a profit before saddling the rest of us with future obligations. One very important question we need to be asking is "Will the sewer rates paid by the new customers cover the long-term costs of maintenance and eventual replacement of the new pipes?" If not, then this legislation is nothing but a mandate for a future subsidy. If the new rate payers don't cover their new infrastructure's maintenance costs, then eventually everyone's rates will have to go up.

It's simple math.

The Lance Hines's of the world say they like new development, especially when the developer is giving the entire community the 'gift' of paying for new infrastructure. They see all the shiny new stuff and declare it good, full stop. However, their simplistic analysis fails to consider a huge section of the ledger when determining if it's actually a good deal for everyone or just a good deal for the developer.

What Hines, et al, see as the 'free market' at work is often nothing more than the present effect of future government subsidies shifted in time.

Re: “More objections to the bathroom bill from Buffalo River businessman

He's a former member of the Parks and Tourism Commission, too.

Go Mike!
