  • Drastic measures for Little Rock schools

It's time to think about radical steps for the Little Rock School District, including the possibility of state takeover. Current governance isn't working well and seems unlikely to get better.

Re: “State school chief makes it clear: Charters more important than LRSD

Funny that no one can see this plan has been in place for a long time! The blueprint is being followed down to the letter. They know the millage is not going to pass and then they have an excuse to never improve LRSD or build the SWLR school. On the other side LRSD have been terrible stewards of tax money! The buildings are in deplorable conditions while adding job after job with no real duties but huge salaries.

Re: “In praise of Diane Zook for questions on voucher program

Where they will run into problems with this is that IDEA is federal funds and has very specific guidelines that must be followed in order to receive the funds. As far as a caseload for SPED it depends on the setting of the student. A SPED Resource Teacher can have a caseload of 26 and is split many times between schools in LRSD. Small schools do not warrant a full time person and many of the larger schools have overflow. Servicing more than one school is just not that unusual but a good way to make sure SPED students are all receiving services in accordance to their IEP.

Re: “UPDATE: Possible principal resignation at Parkview, then news of coaching shakeup

Max Brantley you are a great reporter. The truth is out there and it is not pretty! Dig find the truth and report it. It has nothing to do with Keys or Poore!

Re: “Johnny Key fast-tracks LR charter school expansion in Walton-helped enterprise

My question is why do we keep blaming the state for the mess LRSD created all by itself. For many years positions were given to family or fraternity members without being qualified to hold such positions. Principals have been given jobs even after having ethics violations confirmed or having a charter close in one day for misuse of funds. We continue to blame the state while everyone sat by and watched this happen and did nothing! What has been going on is not working so it is time to try something new!

Re: “Job cuts underway in Little Rock School District

There are loop holes in the state law that allow them to reassign without the May 1 notice. As for the cuts...they were the same cuts that were made last year then Suggs was fired...Burton was interim and rescinded all of the letters. Reorganization is a must in HR and SPED as they are over staffed and ineffective. The Read and Math Specialist do not have direct student contact and serve more as data suppliers. That is not what is needed.
