As plainjim notes, federal law makes it a crime already, and domestic batterers are barred from possessing or buying. Now the legislature is misleading the public which generally doesn't know that already. Or the legislature doesn't know that. Or it doesn't care that it's against federal law, and they are just objecting for the hell of it. Still, the public is misled because of fear of the NRA.
