Free speech at UA
Gary Bowman, a street preacher who stirred a bit of controversy at UA-Fayetteville back in 2002 with his frequent campus rants, prompted rules on campus speech by outside speakers. He was limited to five days' of speaking per semester, and only after three days' notice, and he was prohibited from speaking on "dead days," when students are preparing for finals.
He sued, saying the restrictions were too limiting. He lost in district court. Today, the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals gave him a partial victory.
It said the university could require a permit to speak in the area outside the student union and it also upheld the three-day reservation notice for speakers. The court also agreed the UA could limit speaking on dead days. But, it said the five-day speaking limitation was an "unnecessary abridgement" of Bowman's free speech. It said the university had not proved its contention that a five-day limitation was necessary so that the university could guarantee a diversity of opinions in the public forum.

Man, what a way to start a Friday, having to defend a street preacher......But, as the Bush Era of Misery continues to unfold, every one of us must be on guard at all times to come to the defense of free speech.
I fully expect to see the death of free speech in Bush's 3rd term. So this goofy bastard ranting on the Fayettenam campus must not only be endured, his rights must be protected even by people like me who desire to never hear another word out of a preacher's mouth.
If they silence him, on down the line they'll silence you.

Having attended the UofA during the time in which the man, nicknamed "Moses", came and spoke frequently on campus, I feel obliged to give my take. And while I think that what he said was mostly filth and should be brushed off, he had AND HAS every right to speak on campus as often as he likes. The Dead Day Rule and other such acts on limit his rights to free speech. Anyway, no one studies on Dead Day. We're all too hungover.

Anyone walking to class on the Fayetteville campus in the early '80s must remember Sister Cindy and her hellfire & brimstone diatribes, calling anyone within (a very broad) earshot "whoremongers" and "heathens". As nutty as I thought she was, in a weird way I admired her for having the huevos to dish up the goods while facing the taunts of the frat boys.
