Hurry January
A kind word for Asa Hutchinson, the Republican candidate for governor.
We asked his press spokesman, David Kinkade, if a Governor Hutchinson would send news releases and notices of news conferences to the Arkansas Times. His response:
We don't have any illusions that the Arkansas Times is an objective news source -- it's more of a partisan combatant in the political arena. That said, you know that openess and transparency in government is one of the key themes of our campaign, and it will be one of the defining characteristics of Asa's administration.
Does that mean we would get notice of news conferences and news releases on the same basis as other reporters?
Yes.
Hooray. A grown-up will be the Republican candidate for governor this year.

Good for Asa.
hold on . . . waiting for an observer to needlessly flame me again.

I am a Republican but I would not be able to vote for someone who dumped his wife.

By the way, I know the Blog has previously officially dissed ABC's The Note web site for some obscure reason, but you may still be happy to know that it has taken note of the Times-Huckabee dustup. It provides a link to the Stephens Media story. All this on the page at http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/TheNote/story?id=156238 way down at the bottom.

That would be Tim who dumped his wife, not Asa.

They dis your news objectivity and you still say hooray?

Anonymous, since you have such high personal and civil moral standards that you would not vote for someone who dumped his wife, I feel confident assuming you would condemn gossip and slander as well.
Asa is still happily married to Susan. His *brother*, Tim, has remarried after divorcing his first wife. Tim is not a candidate. I know you would never want to spread false rumors about someone (particularly when they have absolutely nothing to do with the original topic of conversation), so I wanted to help you get this straight.

Wonder if the Gov will get offended that Asa has somehow dissed him...
Posted by: Brand X | April 28, 2006 03:24 PM
Brand X is a helpful guy/gal. Can you answer this, since you seem to know about Asa, Susan, and their matrimonial bliss: Is Asa as self-righteous as Brother Tim?
Posted by: Odell Goodrum | April 28, 2006 03:27 PM
You're right. My error in confusing the two. I apologize to Asa.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 28, 2006 03:45 PM
Maybe the Beebe staff should apologize as well. They and the Democrat Party staffers have been intentionally misleading people about Tim and Asa for an entire year now. I watched it happen in person and was disgusted, even if I wasn't going to vote for Asa.
Posted by: Gossip mongers | April 28, 2006 04:33 PM
It's not Beebe's fault. I've been getting those two idiots confused for years. One's been multiply passed over for promotion, one was cheating on his wife at the same time he was helping impeach Clinton. One was a house impeachment manager. Both lived together in DC. One got his butt kicked in a statewide race in 2002. One will get beaten in 2006. Both are bigtime NWA crapweasels. Your best bet? If you see the name Hutchinson on the ballot, vote for his opponent.

This shows that someone in Asa's organization can read and write. They no doubt can already spot the smell coming from Huckster's petty party yesterday. They can see this isn't playing well with the people of Arkansas or the thinking people of the nation.
But 3 cheers for Asa! at least his camp made the right decision.....although in doing so they held their nose and called the Arkansas Times an unwashed Ethiopian.

Yeah, a grown-up having to put up with AT brats!

Funny how Max gets his knickers in a twist when he gets censored but he doesn't worry at all about censoring others - it is all a matter of money and power and the southern way of expressing it is to silence those who disagree.
ARK. BLOG: Ralph, for an educated man, you aren't very smart. "Censor" me on your newsletter and in your private business to your heart's content. Use a government-financed agency to impede free speech on account of the content of that speech and you have a fight on your hands.

It would be nice to have a grown-up for Lt Governor, too.

Budget Constraints Leave Some in FBI Without E-Mail

FBI Computer Upgrade to Hit $500 Million Mark (must be AASIS)
NEW YORK - Budget constraints are forcing some local FBI agents to operate without e-mail accounts, according to the agency's top official in New York.
"As ridiculous as this might sound, we have real money issues right now, and the government is reluctant to give all agents and analysts dot-gov accounts," Mark Mershon said when asked about the gap at a Daily News editorial board meeting.
"We just don't have the money, and that is an endless stream of complaints that come from the field," he said.
FBI officials in Washington denied that cost-cutting was putting agents at a disadvantage.
Spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said e-mail addresses are still being assigned, adding that the city bureau's 2,000 employees would all have accounts by the end of the year.
Mershon, the assistant director in charge of the agency's New York City office, also said that 100 city agents have been given Internet-ready phones such as BlackBerry devices.
Sen. Charles Schumer called for better access to technology for agents.

"The FBI should have the tools it needs to fight terrorism and crime in the 21st century, most of all in New York City, and one of the most effective means of communications is e-mail and the Internet," he said. "FBI agents not having e-mail or Internet access is much too much a pre-9/11 mentality."

Nice to see a positive comment about a differng political viewpoint.
If this happened more often, AT might gain some more readers.
Or, even if you don't say something nice, just soften the rhetorical name calling.
Nah. Ain't gonn happen . . . would it?

Re: They dis your news objectivity and you still say hooray?
Sure. That's the battered *persons* syndrome. The gop bashes them in the head and the people, much like Max AND the Democrats, go back for more.
Better watch out, they eat their own.

Arkansas Times does not claim to be unbiased. It's in the honorable tradition of a political magazine with a point of view. Bash the Gazette-Demo when you think it shows bias, because it claims not to be biased in its news columns. Arkansas Times is a different animal. I'm sure Max would agree.

Don K:
Come on, man. I've seen your name on here long enough to know that if you're paying any attention at all, you've seen when Max and the Times have said good things about Huckabee. It's always under a heading something like, "Giving credit where it's due." You can even find "thumbs up" notes for him in The Week That Was, too. (See the 4/13 edition).
I don't know the number of weekly readers, but I don't believe the Times is hurting for them. Sure, there are plenty of people who don't read the Times--my septuagenerian parents, for two--but it's not because they don't consider it news. They are creatures of habit.
This is an outrageous stunt by Huckabee that probably won't--but definitely should--bite his hind end. True conservatives would find it outrageous; the neocons, on the other hand, are just fine with it.
