Lt. gov. anyone? (UPDATE)
Democrat Mike Hathorn isn't smiling at the moment. He says opponent Bill Halter has gone negative on him. See extended comments for the slightly hazy details. Halter people? Response?
UPDATE: Bud Jackson, Halter's campaign spokesman, said his response is, "Not true."
Hathorn's press release is copied after the jump.
Halter breaks campaign promise, goes negative on Hathorn
Just over a month ago, when Bill Halter switched from the Governor’s race to the Lieutenant Governor’s race, he stated the reason for the switch was his aversion to negative campaign tactics. “Halter said his main reason for quitting the race was concern that he would be forced to attack Beebe to be successful in the primary. That, Halter said, was "unacceptable." "I have been told by people whose judgment I trust that if I want to win the Democratic nomination for governor, that I must wage an attack-style campaign against Mike Beebe," Halter said.” – Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Jake Bleed, March 10, 2006.
Bill Halter has broken his promise of not going negative on other opponents by attacking Mike Hathorn.
An out-of-state telemarketing firm has been calling Arkansas voters under the guise of conducting a political survey. The caller asks if the person is following the race for Lieutenant Governor in Arkansas. They then ask if the person knows the name Bill Halter, and if they have seen any television ads for Halter. After this, the caller tells the person pro-Halter points. The caller then asks about the name Mike Hathorn, and then launches into a series of statements attacking Mike Hathorn’s character.
“What Mr. Halter is doing is wrong. Not only has he broken his word by engaging in the same tactics he said were unacceptable a month ago, he is also doing a disservice to the voters of Arkansas by hiring out-of-state telemarketers to harass them in their homes. They even called my parents home, and hung up on my mother when they found out who she was” Hathorn stated.
“If Mr. Halter has a problem with my record or my character, there are proper venues to discuss them, but I believe the Arkansas electorate deserves better than what Mr. Halter has chosen,” Hathorn went on to say.
One recipient of the calls, Jo West Taylor, Garland County Treasurer, is available for comment, and her contact information is available upon request.

No surprises here!
Anyone with any sense knew that the "didn't want to go negative" excuse for bailing on the Gov race was crap.
The polls told him he couldn't win, apparently they also told him he needed to bash the other candidates a little on the low down.

Bud Jackson, Halter's imported campaign hack, has a long record on the benefits of negative campaigning. All we are seeing is the same tricks, different state.

Man I hate those telemarketing calls, worst idea ever.
Political calls shouldn't be granted the exception, their drivel is just as bad as the salemen.

Dumb move by Mike Hathorn. His campaign is imploding.
I doubt Halter conducted a "push-poll". Halter probably tested potential negative arguments against Mike Hathorn should he ever have to use them.
That's standard campaign procedure.

This is about HALTER LYING. He claimed he wasn't gonna go negative and he did. Quit putting this off on someone else. Sounds like you're upset you got caught. Just because you lied and got caught doesn't mean you have to pawn this off on someone else. You lied about running for Governor and now you're caught lying about not going negative.

"An out-of-state telemarketing firm has been calling Arkansas voters under the guise of conducting a political survey."
If this is true, it is unethical by polling industry standards, and is an activity that gives polling a bad name and makes our job harder to do.

This is proof to me that Halter's poll numbers have hit their zenith and will now begin to fall off drastically. He is a soldier of fortune who will not win this race.

I can't help but wonder why Halter decided to go negative.
Not normol protocol for the frontrunner.
Seems like it would have been easy to continue blasting the airwaves, and keep the promise.
Maybe he knows something I don't.
Posted by: why? | April 13, 2006 10:27 PM
Actually, I would say it is Halter's Campaign that is imploding.
Seems like 1 million doesn't buy as much as Bill thought:
Couldn't buy 1/3 of an AFL-CIO endorsement
Couldn't buy the Teacher's endorsement - even with all the promises in the world
Couldn't buy much more than 30% name ID
Newsflash - Arkansas isn't for sale, you should have saved the 700,000 K you loaned yourself.

Note to Halter Camp:
If the last name is "Hathorn" and they live in "Huntsville" you may want to leave them off your call list next time.
Unless of course your ego is so big that you think you can win over the guy's mother with a few character barbs.

Well I have observed all these candidates up close. Bill Halter is going to run decent but not enough to win. Like Sheffield Nelson before him he will find Arkansas isn't for sale. Mike Hathorn like Nate Coulter will find being elected to office is like shooting that elusive sixteen point buck ~ everyone talks about it and you can even see it, but no matter what it won't be yours. Jay Martin wants to be a U.S. Congressman so he will stay holed up in Central Arkansas. He won't win Congress either. In the end it will be Tim Wooldridge, who like the tortoise just plods along, and will win. He has prepared for this race for two years and its his to lose. Sure wish Drew Pritt had filed. He would have kept it interesting.

I'm curious as to a couple of things:
1. Why would Mike even bring this up?? It now makes folks wonder what the hell the calls were about and
2. Who the hell cares about Halter?? Or, should it be: Halter!
Here's a person who, for the most part, has stayed the hell away from Arkansas for a good part of his adult life, now, he will, in essence, run a media campaign in hopes of getting elected here in Arkansas? It's like we should be damn grateful that he's offering himself to serve--I can't see that working here in AR.

I learned from Halter's sponsorship of the 6 o'clock news that he worked as a sacker in a grocery store. I also worked as a grocery sacker as a kid, so I think I should vote for him. Unless some of the other candidates were also sackers, then maybe I should reconsider, but they don't have TV ads telling me about their sacking experience, so how can I know. They should run some ads.

While I'm no fan of Halter, this is a very common practice in campaigns. Jimmie Lou Fisher had pollsters ask if certain things about Huckabee would change voters opinion of him. Usually it's regarding issues and not personal things. Where the questions about Hathorn's marriage, adoption, and divorce, or were they about his views? This doesn't even say so it's rather pointless. Either give us the full story or spare us the non-story.
ps. you need to find a different picture of Hathorn. That one looks like a not so hetrosexual teenager.

Dummy - can't you read? right there in plain English on Halter's site, you can't miss it. He's not trying to mislead anyone. When President Clinton says something, its news and he has every right to post it. He even took the extra step in this case to qualify it. Please note: This is not an endorsement. As a general rule, President Clinton does not endorse in contested primaries.

A few days ago at sundown began Passover. This is an ancient holiday to celebrate the freeing of God's people from oppression in Egypt and the slaughtering of the first born of their oppressors. Their faith in God was reaffirmed by spreading the blood of the lamb on their door post thereby allowing the Angel of Death to "pass over" that household.
With all that said....where is our passover? When will we politically be freed from a snivelling and crying over personalities.
Mr. Halter, you say you are for an Education Lottery, and threw out the figure of $250 million as the profit. How did you arrive at that figure? Since the AFL-CIO and others support Michael Wasserman's proposal, how do you marry the two, or can you?
Mr. Hathorn, you spoke out and said you support a woman's right to choose in Bentonville. Yet as a legislator you voted anti-choice and justified it. Can you tell me how you can support one legal precedent and vote for another?
Mr. Wooldridge, can you tell the good voters of Arkansas why it is unique that you have served in the State Senate? After all that argument did not work for Charlie Cole Chaffin and it's been since the 1920's since we have had a sitting State Senator move up to Lt. Governor.
Mr. Martin, can you explain your position on how you will protect consumers as Lt. Governor, especially Arkansas Seniors?
Moreover, to all the candidates, what powers do you think should be added to the Lt. Governor's office?
These are issues of worth that should be debated, not a rewarmed who shot John argument.

Posted by: Donkey | April 14, 2006 02:11 PM
I know yall are going to scold me to replying to Pritt, so go ahead.
Anyway, several things:
DP- When did Tim ever say it was unique that he worked in the Senate? I would rather hear his explanations on that court house hanging bill he was behind. Does he have ANY decent acceptable explanation on this?
I'm curious about Mike Hathorn's anti-choice votes. Please explain.
Does Jay have some inablility to protect consumers, or were you just trying to think of something to ask him since he's pretty much left out of this race?
The blog has been inundated with posts regarding this race over the last several weeks and I should be decided, but I'm not.
I thought I had worked out my decision, but Drew, now I'm confused.
Don't worry--would never vote Halter when there all 3 of the others have a lot of experience in service for Arkansas. I was pretty much letting Wooldridge/Martin's anti-choice separate my look for a pro choice candidate....and now you have confused me on Hathorn. Were his votes that bother you regarding partial-birth, or what? And where can I go to find out more?
I guess if I'm 'anti-Halter' and Tim/Jay claim anti-choice, then my vote goes to Hathorn. But I do want to see where he stood on previous votes regarding the issue that concerns me most. Any direction you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks

"would never vote Halter when there all 3 of the others have a lot of experience in service for Arkansas"
Halter didn't serve Arkansas when Governor Clinton asked Halter to serve in his White House?
With that sort of thinking, President Clinton wasn't servicing Arkansas while he was President!
In the words of John Stossel, "Gimme a Break!"
Posted by: Gimme a Break! | April 14, 2006 03:41 PM
"Donkey" I doubt you are an Arkansan or a true Arkansas Democrat. I have heard no arguments or insults to why I withdrew. So your statement shows you to be the true coward when you don't even have the guts to sign a real name.
****
Hathorn and I were at a Candidate forum in Bentonville. After I stated I was the only candidate who supported choice without reservations, Mike stated he was for choice. Now this was a surprise to me, since in his 2001 Congressional race he was decidedly anti-choice. He admitted he had voted against choice in some cases, but did support choice. Personally I see that as having your cake and eat it too philosphy. I think you should ask him to define.
Jay Martin stated he was going to use the Lt. Governor's office to help seniors out. So I stated that as a way to get someone from his camp to expound on the idea.
Tim Wooldridge has stated over and over he is the only candidate running who has presided over the body to which we all sought to serve and preside over. Also he stated his campaign has been one of careful preparation and talks about his Senate experience.
All three of these men have earned my vote. Bill Halter has not and continues to represent what is wrong about politics.
I haven't decided who I will support yet. It will not be a pure ideological reason. It will be who is the best person to help advance Arkansas forward. It will be someone who is genuine. It will be someone who has earned the right to serve. Bill Halter fits none of that criteria and I will gladly see him defeated!

Arktimes said it has deleted comments from people who repeatedly post and and yet it continues to let Pritt comment.
If Pritt wanted a platform, he should have run himself. He did not run because his whole campaign was for college credit only -- and to have stayed in would have went past the end of his semester.
Why must we keep allowing a guy to post who pulled a fast one over on the voters by pretneding to run for Lt. Governor when all he was doing was attempting to get college credit? Why must we reward a liar withthe right to repeatedly post?

maybe i should have said more experience 'serving in arkansas'. the other candidates have been in arkansas fighting in the legislature for the last several years vs. living in california and raking in money on corp boards with no prior experience working inside of a big governing body of the state he wants to elect him to preside over their Senate. personally, i have a problem with someone moving in just in time to try to buy an election. i wouldn't vote for someone for mayor that moved to town right before an election from another town....and i wouldnt vote for someone for President that just moved to the country from another one right before an election. I chose to keep my more direct opinions of BIll Halter to myself on my earlier thread bc I was really just wanting the question answered that I posed regarding some voting clarification on issues.
And did Clinton call Halter up and ask him to work in his White House, or did Halter call Clinton up and ask if he could work in his White House? Whatever.
My problems, you see, are:
1. Halter should live here longer before running for a Constitutional office for MY vote.
2. Halter should not try to BUY the office or my vote with his money or money from those out in Palo Alto
3. I prefer Harvest Foods over Kroger
Bill Halter might be nice, Bill Halter was a good student, Bill Halter has made a lot of money. But there is NOTHING he can do to get me to vote for him in this election THIS time. Stick around Arkansas and prove yourself, and, yeah, we'll see. Give Arkansas a fair look and I'll give you a fair chance.
And I might be proven wrong, but I would be surprised if the poll that I read in yesterday's ADG is accurate. I didn't and will not get a call due to the fact that I operate solely by cell, and I bet there are more voices out here like mine. I guess the wait will not be too long to find out at this point.

To the talking head who doesn't post a name but blabbers on like an idiot attacking me, let me remind you of the FACTS in this case.
1.) I was running for Lt. Governor LONG before Dr. Art English talked to me about getting credit for it. I announced in August 2005 and didn't register for the class till January 2006.
2.) The semester is NOT over but I have withdrawn from the race.
3.) I never lied about my intentions, my position in the race, or anything. Lying and spinning is more a D.C.-insider trait....a la' Bill Halter.
4.) Since Bill Halter is intent on running for Lt. Governor and claims he is a true Arkie, can he answer without Google or use of anyone else or device or news source the following questions :
a.) The current Quarterback of the Arkansas Razorbacks?
b.) The new name of the Jazz Festival that used to be called King Biscuit Jazz Festival?
c.) The new name of the city that festival is held in?
d.) Do they serve tomatoes in everything or just as a side dish at the All-Tomato Luncheon in Warren?
e.) What cities Amtrak stops in now?
f.) The name of the restaurant that was the political hub in Fayetteville?
g.) The town that is considered the Gay & Lesbian Capitol of the state?
h.) The dates for deer season? turkey season? duck season? and for squirrel season?

BTW....for the record....I have disagreed with Mike Hathorn, but if he earns the nomination for Lt. Governor I will do everything he asks to get him elected. The same goes for Tim Wooldridge and Jay Martin.
Arkansas needs to know those three men have pure and true visions for Arkansas. In the legislature they have been true leaders and fighters for working families all across our state. Most of all, any one of those three could build a consensus and would listen to the people of Arkansas before making a decision. All three would make a good Lt. Governor.

How many of the questions for Bill Halter does one need to answer correctly in order to be a "true Arkansan"? I've lived here my entire life and can only answer 2 or maybe 3 correctly...
Posted by: Anonymous | April 16, 2006 01:41 AM
Dear "Anonymous" if that is true who you say to be, then you are not running for office. Its "Johnny Come Lately" Bill Halter who is trying to convince everyone he is as Arkansan as Razorbacks and Pink Tomatoes.
Also to "Fine Point" about King Biscuit Blues Festival, I did truly notice this, but was trying to trip up the D.C. guy trying to claim his Arkansas roots.
Still thanks for the sentiment and I should have re-written the note.
Also, for the campaign posters and political dogs that we are wagging our tail for our own Pavlov, it should be noted the campaignistas are short on answers for questions of relevance.
Its a sad commentary.

Will you please stop posting Drew Pritts comments. I think that since he was in this race, but could not choke up the filing fee he shouldn't be allowed to post anything about the lt. governors race. Please

Funny how everytime I tell the truth on one of these politicians....namely Bill Halter....someone screams like a demon that I be censored and made to be quiet.
Harry Truman WAS right. He said "I DIDN'T GIVE THEM HELL, I JUST TOLD THE TRUTH, AND THEY THOUGHT IT WAS HELL!"
Also my right to express my opinion, as you do yours, is guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the whole concept of our nation....FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

drew has made many good points on the blog. he must be worrying some of you....and getting under your skin. in arkansas, everyone has a voice. remember that.

Thanks....if they weren't outsiders, they probably would realize I am not Max Brantley's most favorite person. But right is right, wrong is wrong, and Bill Halter is trying to buy an office with slick outsiders, slick ads, slick promises, and a slick varnishing of the truth.
Posted by: Drew Pritt | April 17, 2006 11:31 AM
Drew, you're a moron.
There is nothing wrong with someone spending their own money on their own campaign. It shows a commitment. It's also better than spending others money and not even filing.
Your poliical "career" was over before it started. You were exposed as the blowhard disgrace that you are. Now move on because nobody wants to hear a thing you say anymore. You have relegated yourself to the status of an indignant, blowhard, gadfly with little reason and even less intelligence.
Now go on and try pick up the pieces of your very sad life.
Posted by: Bye, bye, Drew... We hardly knew ye. But we knew enough! | April 17, 2006 11:37 AM
drew: again--just goes to show you are bothering them. keep it up. it will keep them occupied until they are met with the challenge of trying to keep the AR mosquitoes from biting. since they havent lived here through the summer yet, they will probably find this itching puzzling.
drew, you might not be a friend of the california millionaire's....but we still love you! whether you filed or not, you made people think...you made the other candidates figure out where they stand....and you will have your ideas put into policy someday! stay active. i know you will.
Posted by: someofuslikedrew, dammit | April 17, 2006 01:17 PM
Thanks for the encouragement. I am betting the millionaire outsider won't make it to the summer. I did my race with the intention of winning. This was a hard choice but the right one to make.

Drew,
Congratulations on bothering people.
When you die, your tombstone will read "Here lies one sonofabitch who did nothing but bother people/"
You should be really proud of yourself. Your contribution to society: an irritant.

Both of the big DC money candidates will win...get ready for the Mac and Bill show.
Posted by: money talks...good people walk | April 17, 2006 07:50 PM
You know to the poster above who makes a rhetorical swing at me being an irritant, I am reminded of how irritation does wonderful things in life.
A clam gets a grain of sand inside its soft underbelly. It builds up a resistant to the sand grain until a beautiful, exquisite pearl is produced. The pearl is compared to wisdom.
Also, you take a chunk of ugly black coal and place it under extreme pressure. What is produced is a diamond. (Note Bill Halter and Staffers - Arkansas is the only state that produces diamonds.)
Finally, Moses irritated Pharaoh so that he finally delivered our people from bondage.
So thank you for pointing out I am wise, unique to Arkansas, and a leader who will rise up against the rich & powerful and lead our people to freedom!

I've never seen a state with such amateurs running for office at one time. It's enough to write in the names of ghosts from the past.
Posted by: J. Bryan Sims | April 19, 2006 12:02 AM
When a party can only get people barely over 30 to run, it's on its last legs. Luckily the Republicans have even fewer candiates worthy of being elected.

No kidding.
What a bunch of youngsters we have running for LG: Tim Wooldridge, Jay Martin, Bill Halter . . . wait . . .

Am I the only one that thinks it's funny that this thread has collapsed into an argument between Drew Pritt and one of Halter's paid staffers under the guise of about 20 different names?

When will Drew Pritt SHUT UP!
Posted by: donka hote | May 2, 2006 02:43 PM
I do not know the Bill Halter guy, but Drew Pritt has personal problems that have not been dealt with. He has a personal history of dishonesty and meanness. If you fight back when he fires first, you might just bring out the martyr in him, and maybe even the scripture quotes that he seems to ignore in his own personal life. So, how will Drew Pritt deal with what I am writing?
A. Accuse me of working for one of his political enemies.
B. Accuse me not living my life according to some scripture verse that he ignores time and time again.
C. Rip me to shreds.
D. Condescendingly mention that he does not believe in lowering himself to my level.
E. Martyr, martyr, martyr.

I have received two automated telphone calls from Hathorn--what a bad idea. And even if you hang up, it retains control of your phone line, making it impossible to make a call until they are done with your phone. I wouldn't vote for him to save myself--if he calls again I will work to elect anyone one but him. STOP THE CALLS!
