More national attention

An offshoot of the Columbia Journalism Review takes note of Gov. Huckabee's decision to cut the Arkansas Times off from press services. CJR isn't too impressed.

CJR notes that the Balitmore Sun lost a court case in which it protested the governor of Maryland's orders that no interviews be given to a Sun columnist and reporter who had incurred his wrath. Important distinction: In ruling against the newspaper, one mitigating factor noted by the 4th U.S. Circut Court of Appeals decision was that the Sun's disfavored duo continued to receive news releases and press conference invitations. Those are specifically at issue here. We do not contest the governor's ability to extend such niceties as private interviews to those he chooses.

Wrote CJR:

While the governor's office certainly has the right (or so it seems) to choose who does, and does not, receive press briefings and scheduling information, it's important to note that the governor serves at the discretion of the people, and his operation is funded by the tax dollars of the state's citizens.

CJR Daily contacted Stewart, the governor's spokeswoman, and asked why the Times was stricken from the list, to which she simply reiterated the statement she gave to the paper that they don't consider the Times a "legitimate news organization," since it describes itself as a "journal of politics and culture." Pretty weak stuff, that. She repeated the mantra when asked if there was a specific story or an angle of coverage the governor's office didn't agree with, and refused to divulge any other news organizations or citizens who receive email updates from the governor's press office.

Given the precedent set in Maryland, we're not sure what recourse (besides filing time-consuming FOI requests) the Times has, other than rallying its readers to pressure the governor's office to do the right thing, and make public information available to the public: in this case, the reporters of the Arkansas Times.

Comments

Has it occured to you that this has little or nothing to do with the AT? Huckabee is using you to show off to the national neocons.

One of their major personality traits is to blow off the press in a very public way. It's almost like passing a test to join the gang. He's just showing the big boys in the party that he can be a big boy too.

Such a petulant twit. Kick his skinny butt Max! And do it in a VERY public way.

To say Huckabee planned it this way is giving his intelligence WAY too much credit.

Pastor gets upset w/ member of his congrgation, he has the Deacons show the member the door. Old Old story.
He -and his preacher's wife- will never learn the difference between the church and the statehouse, parsonage and Mansion, the collection plate love offering, and the public purse..

And it was always His church, not his.

I bet that the natl media will really let Huck have it! Huck cant have it his wayNE.....

If Huck could control the natl media like he can post prison transfer boards, we'd be in one heap o' trouble.......but that wont happen!! Hee hee!

I'm not a lawyer or as smart as the CJR writers but I see clear distinctions between the Times situation and the Maryland precedent.

Perhaps, I just don't want to believe that any governor can use public resources in such a blatant manner to punish media he dislikes.

I hope the Times does everything it can; and I'll do likewise (call and call).

Some good posts.

So bw, are you saying the Gov is trying to prove he is, too, mean enough to be the Republican nominee for President?

I think Charles is closer, though. As a preacher, Huckabee never had to hear criticism as his flock left his service, either praise or no comment is the polite way to shake hands at the exit.

The Rev. Huckabee and the preacher's wife simply are not ready for prime time. This is why he will never get the nomination. He is merely a political curiosity.

And if he gets very far he has many questions to answer about his born-again health concerns.

Like what about abolishing auto inspection? How do unsafe cars on the road make for "Healthy Arkansas?" And what about not requiring motorcycle helmets? Any trauma physician can explain these elementary issues.

How about flash mobbing the governor's telephone lines in protest of his move against the Times? Anyone?

I thought Jim Harris (Huck's brother-in-law; NOT the Times' JH!) had been sent packing to his cushy new state job and constable appointment in Saline County. This move is the same kind of dumbass stunt he was famous for concocting all those years he was on the Guv's staff...

Wonder whose bright idea this one was? Alice is certainly a big enough airhead to have cooked it up, but I doubt she would have had the initiative to think of it all by herself. Either Jim is still around, or whatever he had must have been contagious.

Bet Rex Nelson is glad he doesn't have to clean up messes like this any more. Say what you want about Rex' ideology and irritating nasal twang, but the guy did a pretty competent job with media relations, particularly considering he probably had to spend half his time nipping hairbrained schemes like this in the bud. No telling how many other outrageous abuses of power never saw the light of day because he was able to stop them before they were implemented...

The Huckster's chances of getting near the Republican presidential nomination are about the same as Frank White's...be he dead or alive. So all this preparing for a national run is mere masturbation on Huck's part.

The most honorable thing Huck could do is finish out this term of office doing the best he can for the people who elected him to that position. It's his job, what he was elected to do and what we pay him for.

He can morph into Mikey the Jehovah's Witness stripper on his own time when he's out of office. But for now he needs to do his job or resign and let the Lt. Governor take over. And since we have no Lt. Governor.....no one in that office suits me just fine. We're paying for nothing, so let's have us some of it.

You just gotta believe Rex Nelson would have defused this moronic ploy the moment it emerged from Janet's mouth and both Huck and Alice Stewart hollered in unison, "Yes! Let's f * * * * Max!"

I agree that Rex must be glad he no longer has to follow behind Janet and shovel up the elephant * * * * she dreams up and browbeats the governor into carrying out.

Were he NOT trying to impress the big boys, Huck would have not gone to Gitmo only to come back and tell whoever would listen what a fine job we're doing treating the "detainees". It's classic Bush Dark Ages Rovian posturing.

It's as if there's a checklist of "Things You Must Do to show Republican Gravitas" and he's ticking them off.

Sure is ticking ME off. Petulant little twit. Kinda fun to watch him flail about though!

Waaaaaugh, waaaaaugh, waaaaaugh! M-m-m-m-mikey k-k-k-icked me ourt of his c-c-c-c-lub. Mommy! Mommmy!

Waaaaaugh, waaaaaugh, waaaaaugh! M-m-m-m-mikey k-k-k-icked me ourt of his c-c-c-c-lub. Mommy! Mommmy!

Such enlightenment.

It is, however, further proof most conservatives are devoid of creative thought.

Lemmings all.

Watch it, Max and AT. If Huck becomes president, you will probably be charged with espionage, per a move apparently now being considered by the bushies.

Alice Stewart has this desire to punish the media she doesn't like. Ask Ron Breeding. Days after Alice became Press Secretary, she ordered Ron cut off from notices of news conferences.
She came up with this punish the Times idea and sold it to Huckabee.
Jim Harris got fed up with fixing her messes and left. Even Chris Pyle, the governor's czar of morality and one of his original staff members, got to where he couldn't take Alice's ability to overcome the voices of reason in the Governor's Office. When Pyle departed, he shook the dust off his shoes as he left.
Kelly Boyd, Joe Quinn and Milton Fine hate her, but know they can't touch her because she is the gov's running buddy. Look for them to go next.

So why is that these incompetent staffers think they are helping their Governor run for president. Is Huckabee totally clueless?

RE: recourse (besides filing time-consuming FOI requests)

Blog, I am surprised at you. When Huckabee dissed you, you said will the other new organizations stand with you and fight for freedom of the press. Now you state that filing FOI requests are time consuming. Sounds like whining to me.

Filing FOI requests is as simple as writing a paragraph and hitting send on an email, also addressing an envelope to mail the printed one with. Takes 15 minutes tops. You can even include the link from the FOI law and back it up by cutting and pasting. That couldn't be faster or less time consuming. What gives?

ARK. BLOG: We've been filing them and, as we noted, having them rejected.

You guys got a nod on Crooks and Liars over the weekend, I see. Here's hoping this will continue to snowball and more and more national media picks it up. Can't wait for Huck to add Crow to his low-cal diet...

You can't be 28640 serious?!?

Why don't you people find something better to do that waste our State Governments time with your pathetic phone calls? Use your massive journalistic powers to seek out something good and grow it instead of pounding dust into finer dust. There are much better ways to use your talents for something useful to the average human, not to further your own gain. Quit being so hard on the Governer, he is a good man that SURPRISE - can't please everybody. He has done a mighty fine job in his tenure, I will say.
