Open line Saturday

Why do they call it open mic night anyway? What's Mick got to do with it? Whatever, it's open mic or mike night, digital variety. Sing away.

The House District 37 Race article says that Jordan Johnson is planning to graduate from law school in December. Rumor around the district is that he's not going to law school anymore. I'm not trying to stir up controversy, and I dont' work or support any campaign. I'm just trying to find who I'm going to vote for, have narrowed it to two, and curious about his actual status...

I notice that the "Latest Blog Headlines" section on the main page is not being updated.

ARK. BLOG Yep, we straightened out the RSS feed mechanism Friday so that if your browser page is set up to receive ours, it would work on the new blog page address. (It is, isn't it?) But I think, in that change, we messed up our own system. I have a message in to the software people, but they are sometimes allowed a weekend off. I didn't notice it until today.

Really like the new blog format. Easy to open, read and post to.

Being one to always find fault - the new format does not seem as personable as the older format. Don't know what the problem is. The new posts seem more mechanical, more organized - it is harder to visualize DBI, the Hunk., Cato, Mann and/or others pounding out their posts with curse words streaming from their mouth and/or steam pouring from their ears. Perhaps a little larger font?

Forget it. Just an old timer missing the way things used to be.

is harder to visualize DBI, the Hunk., Cato, Mann and/or others pounding out their posts Posted by: What do I know?

First, I'd prefer to call him "The Hulk" rather than "The Hunk".

I went back and looked at the old blog (which is still there) and the new font actually looks a little bigger. The differences I noticed:

The posts were narrower before.
The posts had a cyan background rather than being on white background.
The information about who posted it was in bold, like
"Posted : Paula 4/10/2006 "
If the poster had an e-mail address, the poster's name was underlined and in blue font (a hyperlink).

I think the last two differences may have been what made the difference. The bold font, with underlining and blue for the poster's name.

I have had Jordan in two classes at law school. He has been attending night law school for three and a half years while working full time. Sharp student and hard worker. After receiving the approval from the dean, he wisely took off his last semester so he could devote the time needed to the race. I believe he is still on track to graduate in Dec.

Thanks law professor for clearing it up... I hope everything works out well for him and he gets to finish up. Also, I hope he does well in the race.

I hate change of any kind! Sorry, it's a geezer thing. I can live with it all. But for some reason I have trouble seeing the separation between the posts. I miss the names with email addresses showing up in blue. I am not a big fan of this tiny typing box. And I miss making my own paragraphs.

Since my investment here has been zero, I don't feel entitled to do much bitching. I've unblocked the ads to look at the purty women some have complained about and so far haven seen anything I didn't think was pretty tame.

I'm sure in a couple of weeks I'll be used the new format and it will feel like home again. I do wish Bush would quit screwing up, I'm sick unto death of the whole mess and I'm ready to MoveOn.

More on the "snub" of all the Democratic Legislative Candidates Thursday night in Benton County by the Farm Bureau. The very newspaper that reported the snub and pathetic ass covering the Bureau attempeted printed this:

"Thumbs up to the Benton County Farm Bureau for sponsoring a candidates forum this week that gave Benton Countians a chance to hear from many of those seeking their votes in our upcoming local elections.

We were disappointed to learn that a trio of candidates ? Carole Westby, Robbyn Tumey and Lynn Carver ? didn?t receive adequate notice to participate in the event. But we applaud the Bureau?s efforts. A good slate of candidates for county office were in attendance, and their presentations gave voters something to think about between now and Election Day.

"A good slate of candidates", now how could they know this, when the other half were not given the opportunity to speak? Another puppet Gazette paper covering exposed asses. Now how do you manage to invite ALL the Republican candidates and --- whoops, forget the Democrats. Wonder what the Farm Bureau's around the state think of Benton Counties handy work.

If the restromms in a public school are not sanitary (water, soap, paper towels, etc) and the school takes no action to correct it - who has the responsibiity or authority to do something about it if hypothetically, lets say the public school was in Beebe?

Okay, you're the one who opened the mic. (Feel free to skip this post if it looks too long. Got time on my hands right now.)

I was reading the Times when it was in the slick magazine format, and except for ten years or so when I lived out of LR, I've read it the whole time. I've always enjoyed the content--mostly the cultural aspect, because I was never very much turned toward the political.

Then The Old Gray Lady died. I think I became just slightly more tuned into politics then, perhaps because the Democrat could and did say whatever it wanted without a daily voice of reason to keep it in check. (Hell, even when I carried the Democrat as a kid, I read the Gazette. The former's newsprint even smelled bad, not to mention the editorial bent.) The weekly voice of the Times is salve for my aching, burning liberal psyche that gets trampled everyday by the neoconservative boot at my neck.

My first opportunity to vote was in the election of 1980. I don't know of a single Republican on any level who has ever gotten my vote, but that's not because I didn't consider any of them. I was way too young to vote for Win Rockefeller, but I wore and still have a WR'66 pin. I have voted in every election that I was eligible to, save an odd county or school board election here or there.

Admittedly, I've flipped the toggle in favor of candidates or initiatives I knew little about. That's worse than not voting at all, I guess.

But some time ago, I saw a bit in the Times about the blog. I had an idea what blogs were, but had never really seen one. So I checked it out. It opened my eyes--more widely than they've ever been opened--that people like me, the politically not very engaged, are partially to blame for the mess we're in.

Anyone who spends any time on this blog knows deathbyinches (aka Jo Carson--heh heh). His posts catch everyone's attention for their length and depth. But the part of his message that caught my attention most is that we--WE--have to do something.

This is one of the darkest times in our nation's history, and the MSM (especially the Fox-ish outlets) paints the "everything would be okay if the damned liberals would fall in line" picture. It's sickening.

The blog is a terrific forum for all kinds of folks to discuss issues that affect us all. I appreciate the opportunity that Max, Warwick, and the Times provide. And I will get used to the new format.

We need to muster a unified message in this next election cycle, and we need to engage those "regular folks" who are not as engaged as they should be. Our nation has been coasting along for several generations, but we really are at the brink of disaster.

The confusing thing about the new format is that the blogger's name and info appears after the line, then the new comment appears directly below, with nothing to indicate that a new blogger is making a new comment. Does that make sense?
But, it matters not, what is important is that we have a forum to express opinions, and I, too, wish to express my thanks to the staff od the AT. Thanks!

This blog appears to be using the TypePad blogging software now. I guess Softwyre finally gave up trying to reinvent the wheel and decided to go with an existing blogging program. That's a smart move... Of course there are better open source blog programs that are free, but I guess the Times has money to blow....

Here is an example of another site using the same blogging software...

Does this look familiar?

ARK. BLOG: We suspect you can find hundreds if not thousands of sites using the Movabletype Publishing Platform. We bought it rather than invent the wheel and, on speed of access alone, it has proved worth the investment.

I'm sick of neighbors thinkin' they've got to have a dog...no matter that they obviously hate dogs and never intend to spend any time with their dogs.

I, god have patience on this Easter morn, actually hate my neighbor. For almost a week I've watched three dogs stuck out in a rigged up pen without so much as a leaf for shade and not a house for any of them.

Yes, I called the city; yes, the city came and said my *#^%*#+ neighbor had until Monday to license and get them some kind of shelter.

Yesterday I watched...never mind, I HATE MY NEIGHBOR.

More bitching: I'm sick of our city politicians forgetting that they were ONLY hired to do the will of the people, to make sure city government is run as efficiently as possible. For example: Ours were NOT hired to tell us we can't plant a Bradford pear 'cause 'they think' there are too many.

This kind of crap is arrogant, insulting and NOT what they were hired to do.

Suzie: Your comments got their attention.

They are coming to get your computer,

I wouldn't doubt it...grrrrr.

I am disappointed that the General Assembly website no longer makes available the recorded House and Senate votes on bills and resolutions for any except the most recent special session. Do you think they will restore that data after the general election? I mean, when it is no longer dangerous for citizens to see how their elected representative voted on bills and question them about that during the campaigns? Do you think we could convince them to restore it at least for the unopposed and term-limited, even if they redact the records of those with opponents?

You can still view votes from previous sessions. Just click "Previous Legislative Sessions" on the left frame at www.arkleg.state.ar.us, then click the session and "Bill Status."

why you pay for a blog program....some of the best blog programs are free to install on your site.

when things get hot the blog folks change the format - we were all getting comfortable - finding out the right wing bias of the blog meisters and - bnag - they change - all the old evidence is lost - and so it goes - every time we back them into a corner - on censorship - on logic - on facts - Bang - it is into the archives - the end of history - no one is responsible - it all becomes a DBI joke - it is the southern way of avoiding responsibility - change the subject - archive the debate

: As we told you in the original post, Ralph, the archive material is still reachable at the old site.

Anyone know why all the Wal-Mart trailers on the highway only have Oklahoma license plates when they are coming out of their DCs in Searcy or Bentonville and where ever else they have one in-state?

In reference to the law school issue, the Times was struggling to find differences in the candidates in the District 37 race in last week's article. That may be one difference between the two young candidates. One is a semester away from graduating law school and the other has almost a decade of legal experience.

Fed Up--WalMart (and many other trucking companies) license their trucks in Oklahoma because the license fee is very low there. Arkansas allegedly has very high fees to license a big rig. I'm sorry I don't have better facts, but that's my understanding.

You know WalMart....would rather watch the bottom line than contribute one cent more to the state they're in.

Right wing bias of the blogmeisters?

You really should start taking your medicine, Ralph.

In further reference to the law school issue re: Jordan Johnson
Jordan not only has almost completed his legal education while workign full time, he has been a community activist and has proven experience on a number of relevant issues that will probably come before the legislature. As an attorney, I want my representative to be well rounded, not just having experience within our legal community. That's why I'm voting for Jordan....and for what it is worth, we know he will do fine under pressure and is not affraid of hard work if he has managed to be successful in both work and law school. Let's give him a chance.

Regarding the District 37 race, there are plenty of ways to separate the candidates . . . the least of which is how many class they have yet to complete toward a law degree.
The best candidate will support a progressive agenda with an ability to build coalitions and fight the tough battles.
Sound familiar? That's exactly what Jordan Johnson did when he fought Deltic Timber and SB230 in 2005 and he'll do it again in 2007 (because it's bound to come up again).
If you have questions about Jordan's ability or qualifications, email him yourself through his website at www.electjordanjohnson.com.
He's got my vote.

Re: Fed up to here & trailer licensing. These outfits like Wal-Mart also avoid personal property taxes on their rolling stock if registered out of state. I would guess that their hundred-million dollar airforce, while based in Arkansas is more than likely registered elsewhere, to avoid paying the property taxes that fund schools here. Always the low price...always.

Comeon you Dems...You kept the tax break money President Bush gave you...didn't you? Being good lirerals you should have sent your tax savings back to the IRS to fund more wasteful programs and football coach salaries. Any of you Dems want to admit you kept the money? I suspect not.

Jordan says he is the candidate to vote for because he is young, white and male, and the legislature is full of good ol' white boys for the most part. He is also not so subtlely playng the "gay" card.

I say that If Skippy wanted to run fo ther House...he should have just entered the race himself instead of putting his puppet in there.

And is it really true that "mommy" is now having to run Jordan's campaign for hime?

Jordan can't help it that he is a straight white male anymore than I can't help it that I'm a gay white male, and it is sad anyone would use that against him. It sounds like his opposition is worried and desperate. Being an openly gay man, I support Jordan and know he will effectively represent all types of people at the leg with respect and dignity.

Jordan Johnson supports all people and his record of public service and civic activism prove it. Furthermore, Jordan actually ran his mother's race the last time she ran for the legislature . . . not vice versa. Finally, Jordan has amassed a record of success at Cranford Johnson on his own.

You guys are the 41710 best, thanks so much for the help.
