Peace now
Cindy Sheehan will bring her protest against the war in Iraq to Arkansas in May. She'll speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Eureka Springs Auditorium.

'PROGRESSIVE' MEDIA STALLS: 'AIR AMERICA' IN AUDIENCE PLUNGE NYC, 'DAILY KOS' BOOK SELLS ONLY 3,600 COPIES
Wed Apr 26 2006 11:39:51 ET
Left-leaning new media has hit turbulence at the marketplace, newly released stats show.
A book hyped by major media as documenting a progressive revolution of "blogs" and political power, DAILY KOS 'CRASHING THE GATE,' has sold only 3,630 copies since its release last month, according to NIELSEN's BOOKSCAN.
[NIELSEN claims only 2,062 copies of DAILY KOS have been purchased at the retail level; the rest coming through 'discount' outlets.]
Meanwhile, the just released radio Winter Book [Jan-Mar 2006] from ARBITRON shows AIR AMERICA in New York City losing more than a third of its audience -- in the past year!
Among all listeners 12+, it was a race to the bottom for AIR AMERICA and WLIB as mid-days went from a 1.6 share during winter 2005 to a 1.0 share winter 2006.
During PM drive, host Randi Rhodes plunged to 27,900 listeners every quarter hour, finishing 25th place in her time slot, down from 60,900 listeners every quarter hour in the fall.
A network source says the radio ratings released today do not reflect the overall growth of the broadcast.
"The demos are better, and listeners trust AIR AMERICA to give them the real truth on issues and the Bush presidency," says the insider.

As a liberal, I find Air America to be no better than Rush Limbaugh, etc.
Modern liberals are in general more educated, and this fact is put to good use by the Right- would an attack on the "Liberal Elitist Media" be possible any other way? We do not need pandering to our basest sensibilites for affirmation, or in order to skirt a personal fortress built to protect us from those who are seemingly more knowledgeable.
Give us the facts, we'll come up with our own opinion and the rationale and defenses thereof.
I'm not denying that there are airhead liberals with no idea why they truly believe something. But I'll take one of these over a well-(mis)informed Dittohead apologist any day.
Posted by: monkeywhacked | April 26, 2006 12:50 PM
Cindy Sheehan does not fall into the "airhead" category, but whe is not your traditional spokesperson.
I wish every issue upon which Bush has shat had such a successful - if not more stateswomanlike - attention grabber
Posted by: monkeywhacked | April 26, 2006 12:55 PM
I hope I can move a few things around so I can head north to see Cindy in Eureka in person. What an inspiration she is in these troubled times.
I'm all for Air America, but I rarely listen to it because unlike Republicans I do not need anything other than my own brain and research abilities to keep myself informed. I get a kick out of the Daily Show and Keith Olbermann, but I do my own research and take what talking heads say with a grain of salt.
Posted by: Deathbyinches | April 26, 2006 12:59 PM
Is Air America on here? If it is, what station is it on so I can be sure to miss it?
Posted by: Don Keyhotay | April 26, 2006 01:01 PM
Exactly, monkeywhacked.
Air America radio gets annoying to me too. Like you said, liberals are more knowledgable and don't need the superficially based talk shows like most conservatives.
Thus, we'd rather spend our time listening to real news, like that of NPR, instead of Air America.
If you want to see liberal success, look no further than the top sellers on Amazon. Left-leaning political books dominate.
And where'd you get your source anyways, poster #1. In a quick google search I found that the book had sold more than that. On Amazon.com, the book is ranked 25th in sales. Can a book be ranked #25 on one isolated website and only sell 3,600 copies worldwide? I don't think so. I'm sure the Drudge Report is misconstruing yet another news report.
Posted by: JD | April 26, 2006 01:12 PM
Cindy Sheehan---poster boy for the left. If she is an example of the superior intellect of the left, conservatives have nothing to worry about. I'll take William F Buckley any day.

Yes. Take him, please.
I miss the days when he and Gore Vidal exchanged blows. Those were the days.

I guess it makes people feel better to spread rumors like Kos' book isn't doing well and Air America Radio is a sinking ship. But it's simply not true. Oh well, better luck next lie. Sure worked on that WMD thing!
Posted by: Litz | April 26, 2006 01:53 PM
Cindy Sheehan has demonstrated how you can parley the death of a son who served his country honorably into a 'moment in the sun' for a large ego.

Vidal and Buckley debates---those really were exciting.

Repubs persist in believing that if you tell a lie often enough...
Yup. In tandem with ignoring facts, like how Glenn Reynolds' book is ranked 1,539th compared to Kos' 26th on Amazon.com. And when that doesn't work, they resort to the tired old ploy of bringing up Bill Clinton's name! Now, who's been in office for the past 6 years?
The Rethugs have become a self-parody. Rather sad, really.

Republicans really, deep down LOVE Bill Clinton.
Any one who loses a loved one in this based-on-lies war deserves compassion and respect...regardless of their political leanings or their stance on the war.

Saw a bumper sticker today that said "I miss Bill!"
Anyway, clearly what happened here is that Drudge posted this mean-spirited item, not realizing that the Nielsen figures he quoted were not complete sales figures, they just represented one segment of the retail market. Now he's embarassed by his mistake and looks like an idiot, so his minions have to hit the blogs and try to drum up some support.

I'm crazy about Bubba and Mrs. Bubba. He did more for the Republican party in the south than the RNC could have ever dreamed of. The RNC isn't terribly innovative but with the antics of the Bubbas they have experienced much growth.

Thanks litz for confirming my suspicions.
I knew it.
Lying sacks of sh*t.
That is one of the Republican tactics: make up complete falsities and repeat it several times with hopes that some will believe it.
Apparently, some do. Uninquisitive idiots, mainly.
And that's why the conservative IQ is lower on average.
Posted by: JD | April 26, 2006 03:19 PM
"And that's why the conservative IQ is lower on average."
And your source for this tidbit? I wasn't aware that political philosophy affected IQ. Obviously John Locke, William Buckley, etc. were unaffected. Your theory about that?

Anon, your comment kind of confirms the statement. Political philosophy doesn't affect IQ. You don't get dumber by being republican. Dumber people become republican. While I'm not advancing the philosophy myself, I found it necessary to explain the statement to you.

Anyone who uses the death of their son to promote themselves does not deserve my respect. The only one who deserves respect is her son.
It was because of the death of her son that she went public with her outrage. As far as I know, she wasn't seeking publicity until that heartbreaking moment. But don't let compassion or the facts get in the way of your mean-spirited bias.
Posted by: suzie | April 26, 2006 03:44 PM
So I'll ask again---how do you explain a 'Buckley' who is a Republican? You also didn't explain how someone like a John Locke is a conservative? Let me help you a little bit---you need it for such stark generalizations. There are more than a few who are Republicans and conservatives that would meet any reputable standard of 'intelligent'. Comprende? On the other hand ,there would be some who meet any reputable standard of 'dope' who call themselves democrat or liberal.

She 'deep sixed' her husband when she started on her venture. Apparently her vows of marriage didn't trump her desire to take an action that would demean her son if he were alive today. How do you explain the many more who lost sons who continued to support their country.

DAILY KOS' BOOK SELLS ONLY 3,600 COPIES
"So to recap -- top ranking on Amazon, over 10,000 copies sold in three weeks the book has been out. Distributors have ordered 50,000 copies of the book, which has gone through three printings already (our small publisher can't afford to do large first printings). And we're just halfway through our book tour.
Hey anyone of you wingnuts who believe anything Drudge says...I have some WMD stored on special purchase land in Florida. I will sell both of them to you.

The republicans used the same bag of lying tricks with the Dixie Chicks. The only tangible impact of their Bush statements was the that Fox's twin (Clear Channel) quit playing their records for a time. But I still hear talk about how their Bush statement pretty much ruined their careers...their concerts still sold out and their record sales only dropped temporarily (and after 'Home' remained near the top of the charts for about 30 weeks).
The Dixie Chicks wrapped up the summer on top of the touring season with $61 million in gross North American ticket sales, despite a spring controversy over an insult lead singer Natalie Maines made at President Bush.
The trio was the top-grossing country tour of the year, with 57 sold-out dates, and was third in overall concert sales, behind the Rolling Stones and Elton John/Billy Joel, according to Pollstar.
Lying sacks of sh*# is right, jd!

Here is a good example of a low Republican IQ. Supporting our troops and loving and supporting our country has zero to do with kissing the ass of the criminal Bush administration.
Bush has done more to hurt America and the world than Osama Ben Forgotten. Cindy is twice the patriot and 3 times the man King George is. Think! Come on....think!

No Suzie, anyone who loses a loved one in a war deserves compassion.
However, Respect is something you earn.
Don't confuse the two.
We all should have compassion for Ms. Sheehan's loss - but there is plenty of room to disagree on whether her conduct is worhty of respect.

I wish someone would explain to me why people have jumped on the bandwagon of a woman who screams about the death of her son yet abandoned him years before and appears to only be screaming about his death because it gets her picture on the front page of the media? She's not an inspiration and it amazes me that people think such thoughts.

We may be splitting hairs but I do respect the sacrifice of every soldier who's given their life and of every soldier's family. I understand the distinction you're making; I just think they have earned my respect through their sacrifice.
Several families of dead soldiers have done like Sheehan (in varying degrees of activism) but in favor of the war; and their sacrifices, along with Sheehan's, are worthy of our respect regardless of the politics.

CJ and JD,
To inject some facts, Democratic polling has shown that the higher the formal education level a US citizen has the more likely they are to vote *Republican* except when moving beyond a Master's degree to a doctorate. Put more bluntly, the DNC's own exit polls show you are most likely to have the support of high-school dropouts and pointy-headed, academics with tenure.
It is one of the macro-level demographics working against Dems: people vote primarily their educational and economic status. Thus, the more we create higher levels of college graduation and the more we move people from poverty to the middle class the more Republicans succeed.

I also find it laughable that Kos posts a thread to document that they have really sold 10,000 copies, not 3,600! Puh-leeze. 10,000 copies among 260,000,000 Americans. More people will hit this blog today.
Good news for Kos?: they're already up to number 22 at Amazon. Bad news: number 23 is a history of the income tax that hasn't even been published yet! (yawn)

The human brain is marvelous in its ability to block out life's most embarrassing and painful moments. Even though we have started nationally forgetting what a lecher/cretin/liar/weathervane Mr. Clinton was, I am not sure that some of us can live long enough to forget the disrespect he brought to the oval office.
So now Mr. Clinton can play like a statesman and smugly enjoy watching the current president take his own pounding.

Sorry Susie, statesman just doesn't seem to fit. In my mind, statesman implies a man of honor, a man of his word. Hardly a description of Mr. Clinton.
And, although I may describe him occasionally using pretty much non-disputed modest, factual descriptors like liar, lecher, etc., I will respect the office (although not him) enough to restrain my name-calling to factual descriptions.
I would hope the intellectual giants on this blog would raise the level of discourse above petty namecalling . . .myself included.

"Even though we have started nationally forgetting what a lecher/cretin/liar/weathervane Mr. Clinton was, I am not sure that some of us can live long enough to forget the disrespect he brought to the oval office."
Most people may not remember that a day or 2 after 9-11 some nut case crashed a tiny Cessna into building much much smaller than the Twin Towers. It was a little startling because everyone was still very upset about the 9-11 attack, but all in all, not much damage and only the pilot died.
In the whole scheme of things, Bill Clinton's shortcomings are even smaller than the Cessna incident. While King George's term of office has been like a continuous loop of 9-11. As I changed my sign in the yard today to read 2391, I thought about how Bush is edging ever closer to killing more Americans than Osama Ben Forgotten.
Anyone who can look at the Clinton years and think Bush has done better is clearly insane. In light of 2 stolen elections, the War Without End in Iraq, Katrina, the Republican scandals that continue to unfold, 3 buck a gallon gas, Plame leaking, no bid contracts to Halliburton, illegal spying on Americans, lies, corruption, incompetence and failure of the Bush administration, I'd be willing to give the job of President to Bill Clinton for the rest of his life.
Bush is simply the worst thing to happen to the United States since the Civil War. Single-handedly the puppet President Bush has made America look mean, stupid, dishonest, dangerous, corrupt....all the bad traits that Bush himself has in spades. It is an extremely embarrassing time to be an American. By the time he's done, it might be an extremely dangerous time to be an American too. Ask the 2391 families who got a folded flag from our government in the last 3 years......

She's an inspiration because she had the courage to stand up to the Greedy Old Pustules and question this immoral war and how we got lied into it, when no one -- not our representatives in Congress, not our corporate-owned media -- had the balls to do so. Cindy Sheehan is my hero!
It amazes me the ugly things Wingnuts say about her. I thought y'all were the Family Values crowd? I thought you loved motherhood and apple pie? Shame on you.

Do any of you 'lefties' believe any war is moral? If you do, please describe what kind of war that would be. I guess I'm not sure why 'lefties' live in this country when France would be a far better pick for those of your persuasion. The French usually capitulate rather quickly to avoid involvement if they do find themselves in a shooting war. Doesn't that sound more simpatico to you?
Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2006 08:42 AM
Sorry Don, as you've said 'respect' has to be earned. And, there's not one iota of evidence that monkeyboy has ever done anything to deserve that distinction. His presence in the presidency is what's brought disrespect to the office. So, if you must, blame those who've enthroned him in that high office; not those of us who refuse to let false demigods disguise the reality that King George is nothing but a naked monkeyboy.
Your assertions, however, that monkeyboy is somehow a greater character slur than cretan, lecher or liar; and that Clinton's affair was a greater affront to the presidency than all the crap Bush has inflicted upon the country, is, well, interesting and telling.
