The last refuge

The Bushies have found a hot button to push to shore up their sagging fortunes -- the Spanish version of the National Anthem. So far, only a congressional resolution is planned. Why not a constitutional amendment to criminalize its singing in foreign tongues? Sheesh.

Comments

Let's see now. Many will now understand the words of our national anthem who have never understood them before. How can that be bad?

Jim:
Our national anthem has already been translated so I doubt that this will teach anyone something that they did not already know.

Singing it in Spanish is kind of a positive step - but it does seem odd - just another symbolic gesture that exemplifies a lack of commitment to fully become a US citizen.

The Mexican community liked it when Bush campaigned to them in Spanish. Maybe they could reciprocate . . .

Sure. Put all however-many-millions of them in front of a teleprompter. No doubt they could pull it off. They just might not get the full meaning.

jReally, I think most Americans are getting wise to the Bush administration's tactic of attempting to distract them from the real issues with manufactured hoopla like this. Remember duct tape?

Hey I thought it was already being translated...

Doesn't it go like this

Jose can you see......?

By all means, let's have all three branches pass a resolution, law, or constitutional amendment to stop this outrage. After all, all of our other problems are just about solved. Our leaders have taken care of that nasty war, health care, our schools, etc., etc. Maybe they have this as an issue because they think it might be something they can handle. Unlike all the other issues before them. Dicks!

Quite often I see the anthem translated into American Sign Language on TV. No one gets upset. The idea is that hearing-impaired people can understand and join in the anthem. Now some Hispanics have done the same thing to show their love for this country, and their desire to be citizens--and we're going to make that illegal?

Ummm. Archie, most hearing impaired peolpe cannot speak so, unless you want them to write it out in English and hold up a sign, I don't think the comparison succeeds.

And, I think only AT mentioned making this a criminal act . . .

This all goes to show that in their heart of hearts the Republicans despise Hispanic immigrants. Like the scorpion, "it's just their nature."

The National Anthem...the American flag....the Pledge of Allegiance. NONE of these has intrinsic value. The value of these icons comes from what they represent...what they honor. Given that the Bushies have, by their actions, systematically strived to disassemble what truly is great about America (the Constitution...the principles of equal rights...compassion and open arms for all), issues like the language of the anthem & flag burning are totally without meaning. BTW, Max & Warrick, why not post a thread pointing people to Neil Young web site (www.neilyoung.com) where they can hear his forthcoming call to reason? I agree with Neil...let's impeach this SOB and bring America back to where the anthem, the pledge, & the flag mean something again!

The whole issue is sheer nonsense. When you think how few Americans learn another language -- or even learn English very well -- you have to realize how silly this so-called issue is. Of course people are more comfortable using the language they learned as a child. As long as they can function in English, and most immigrants can after a while, what's the problem? If Spanish (or Swahili or Urdu or Russian or Chinese, ad infinitum) speaking people want to sing the anthem in their native tongue, I think of it as a gesture of respect rather than disrespect.
To be honest, I don't want to sing it in any language. And if you heard me trying it, you'd agree.
An afterthought: I wonder how much of the anthem Bushie can even recite in English.

Considering the U.S. appropriated the tune for the national anthem from an English drinking song, why not sing it in Spanish?
Isn't it the meaning of the lyrics that's important?
I always wonder what the words are to foreign national anthems when I hear them (usually during Olympic medal ceremonies), so what's the big deal?

Did you forget AT's main point - it is another smoke and mirror issue. Remember Iraq, social security, WMD, the Gulf coast, the corruption in the White House, the outing of a CIA agent by the pres and vice pres, and the ............?

Wake up!

The song sucks whatever language it is sung in. Hardly anybody can reach those notes.

These same folks should push for a resolution requiring the Bible to be quoted in Yiddish/Hebrew/Greek instead of English.

I'm sure Jim Holt is all over this. DEFEND THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!

I knew Bush allegedly could pronounce a little "kitchen Spanish," but I didn't know Rove could sing or produce recordings.

Another distraction coup for the graduate of CREEP political tactics and strategy.

P.S. How above the Spanish rave accompaniment demanding amnesty

I note that the national anthem of a major free country to our north is officialy bilingual.

I assume you are talking about Canada.

I am not a Canadian expert, but hasn't this been a cause of division among them, that the French speaking portion at times has lobbied to be separate from the other part of Canada?

Does the hat on the President make you want to dip a chip in it? Gosh, how much more dips--t stupid can he look?

"I am not a Canadian expert..."

Maybe you can become a diabetic consultant.

The Bush in the sombrero picture is clearly a Photoshop fake.

Yep, another smoke screen "look over here instead of over there" scam.

Gee, the Republicans should be working as magicians, they like to divert attention so much.

Did I secretly access the website blog for the Communist Party of America? Bush's disagreement of the National Anthem being sung in Spanish is a smokescreen? Give me a break. You know I don't think I would shed a single tear if traitorous white piece of crap, like nearly all the people who have commented on this post, were victimized by a gang of MS 13 mestizos singing America's National anthem in Spanish. Ah the irony!

Like a turd in the punchbowl Chris Quimby rides his horse of hate into the party. I'm pretty sure I am surrounded by at least a thousand Mexicans and in all these years not one of them has ever acted in a threatening manner towards me or my family. You're making monsters out of chicken plant workers. Grow up!

My 14 year old daughter will skip school tomorrow along with all her Hispanic classmates and we'll both be marching down Garrison Avenue in the afternoon in support of our Hispanic neighbors. I think this will be a very important civics lessen for her, though this was her idea not mine.

Johann Christmann Duchmann, (11 Jan 1718/19 - Dec 1802) arrived in Philadelphia on October 17, 1749 on a ship called the Dragon from Niedomodern, Bas-Rhin, France. He was the first of my mother's family to come to America. His son would be a surveyor with a very young George Washington. His grandson would get a medal for feeding our troops during the War of 1812. The family went downhill after that.

My ancestors came with nothing, probably worked for nothing for a long time before they got a toe hold. It's because we were all immigrants at one time that I stand beside the Mexicans that live all around me, work hard, pay taxes, raise their families, go to church and behave themselves.

What more do you want from another human being? Why would you want them to be mistreated? Why would you make fun of them and enjoy their hardships?

I'm perfectly happy for them to sing the National Anthem in Spanish until they learn to sing it in English. And give them a few years, most of them will. Be a better person, try it just once...huh?

In support of the philosophy of the Latino effort to demonstrate the impact of immigration on commerce, I will do my part by abstaining from patronizing Mexican food restaurants during the month of May.

I guess I should limit eating out to joints that serve their burgers with American cheese.

Don, don't forget to get yourself a heaping portion of those Freedom Fries too.

Some nice juicy, crisp fries by any name would be good with my 'Merican cheeseburger but that much cholestera . . cholestro. . cho. . . heck, that much grease would be bad for my waist line.
