Uninsured rate high in Arkansas

Next week is Cover the Uninsured Week, an annual focus on health care coverage sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Statistics released yesterday show that Arkansas ranks 44th in the nation in the percentage of adults who have the coverage necessary to get proper health care, the Arkansas News Bureau reports.

Arkansas ranks 44th in the nation in the percentage of adults who have the coverage necessary to get proper health care

Considering our usual position of 49 or 50, I guess we're well ahead on this issue. Considering the success of ARKids1st, maybe it's time for a move toward "ARSeniors1st". It doesn't have to be full coverage. We are not a rich state. But everybody should at least have access to the basics.

By the way, it's nice to see a post here without 50+ responses, mostly made by the same handful of folks, posting more or less the same thing repeatedly under different pseudonyms. Unfortunately, of late, any post mentioning state politics quickly balloons into an unreadable condition.

I'm not surprised by the numbers because having medical insurance is becoming the exception rather than the rule.

It's nice to know that we have the resources to be the world's police force, but we can't even take care of our citizen's medical needs.

Medical care is a right belonging to every human, not a reward of wealth.

The health insurance system itself is a flawed system. Why should it be up to the employers to provide for the employees? I feel we need a huge brainstorming session on a national level with players from various fields and industries and wealth (or lack thereof). Sometimes we neglect to realize that not everyone wants health insurance. There are a handful of healthy folks that don't feel its necessary and they are lumped in with everyone else. I do think it should be affordable to all that desire it. I also feel that rate increases and such are not always the fault of the health insurance company. More emphasis needs to be put onto the consumer being educated on the quality of care being provided by the doctors and hospitals.

There is a difference between Heath Insurance and Health Care.

All people in Arkansas (citizens and aliens) have ACCESS to health care.

Having Health Insurance is just how you have a group of people pay your bill at a higher rate.

I went to rent a car after an accident. It was a cheaper rate paying it myself than it was if they billed my insurance. Medical care is the same deal.

They have access during emergencies, but most medical clinics, at least where I live, will not see patients unless they have insurance and pay the copay, if they pay in full at the time of the visit, or if they make some other arrangements. I've heard lots of people at the doctor's office trying to work out those arrangements without getting anywhere.

If you're uninsured and you get sick wtih something like sinusitis or bronchitis, not life-threatening but needs to be treated, you better have about $75 to shell out for the office visit, and then of course paying for the medicine is a whole new problem. And if you dont have insurance, you probably dont get sick pay either, so your problems are doubled. I dont know the answer, but it's not true that everyone has access. In an ER, yes, but for routine medical care or minor illnesses, no.

there are Ar Dept of Health clinics all over the state for treatment of non emergency care.

Just exactly how does the State know if you have health insurance or not?

Have you seen this before? It's a number guessing game: http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/guessthenumber.html. I guessed 75601, and it got it right! Pretty neat.
