And the winners are

Dadgummit. We missed the annual Quiz Bowl championships on AETN. Every year, the matches are a confirmation of the brilliance of many Arkansas school kids and the steady erosion of our memory as we puzzle over the questions they answer with lightning speed. These state championships didn't get the coverage that, say, the average soccer conference champion receives in the newspaper, so we thought we'd pass along the results here.

CONWAY, Ark. (AETN) — The 2006 Arkansas Quiz Bowl champions were recently decided in the state conference finals, held at the Arkansas Educational Television Network in Conway. The final standings were:

· District 1A – Van Cove over Haas Hall, 190 points to 140.
· District 2A – Episcopal Collegiate over Centerpoint, 255 points to 240.
· District 3A – Dardanelle over Nashville, 280 points to 170.
· District 4A – Malvern over Morrilton, 275 points to 240.
· District 5A – Cabot over Fort Smith Southside, 265 point to 170.

If they send along the all-tourney team, we'll post that, too. Many top Quiz Bowlers pop up each year on our Academic All-Star team.

Those scores for the bigger districts are surprisingly low. When I played Quiz Bowl at Conway several years ago, a match between the bigger "powers" at the time - Benton, Conway, FS Northside, FS Southside, NLR, Morrilton, ASMS, Cutter Morning Star (thanks to a brillaint kid who is now leading Harding University to national recognition in the College Bowl world), and other quailty programs would be in the 300's, and it wouldn't be uncommon for a team to score in the 400s.

With that being said, congrats to those teams.

Way to go Malvern (and congratulations to all of the competitors). Go Leopards!

Jason Loy. From cutter morning star....class of 2004. A beast.

I believe in the national tournament he scored more points than anyone else. That's an incredible feat. Supposedly it was a one man team....

Where is Northside? Did Mr. Jones retire or something?

Yes, Larry Jones did retire from the world of Quiz Bowl. 2004 was the last year he coached, and his final teams weren't as good as they could have been. In 2003 the team didn't even make it out of the 5a west regional, and in 04 they only made it out due to some very, very sketchy circumstances. Granted, they did work during that time to win 5A state, nevermind the fact they did not legimately qualify in the first place.
