Fair and balanced -- that's us

The Huckster has unloaded his response to criticism from a certain liberal-leaning, free-distribution newspaper of his decision to blackball the Arkansas Times among all Arkansas media requesting routine services from his publicly financed office.

Grab a cup of coffee. He's got many hundred words, not all of them accurate. Like saying everything we want is on his website. To name one of many exceptions: This particular missive went out several hours before it was available on the web. Time does matter. Also: We have never requested notice every time he conducts an interview with a member of the press. We have asked only for the routine notice of general press availability distributed to those, on request, who regularly cover the Capitol. Big difference.

The Huck was kind enough to share a photo of me at one of his news conferences to show what an open fellow he is. Indeed, he was quite cordial that day and I believe my report on the session was similarly warm (I even included, at his request, the note that he didn't frequent the sorts of places that would likely be exempted from the new anti-smoking law). He fails to mention, however, how we'll be able to hoof over to the Capitol for repeats if he no longer informs us about such press confabs. It would appear, too, that his press secretary is no longer answering our questions.

Anyway, read His Petulancy (perhaps "the most accessible governor" ever; he says modestly) for yourself, right here.

Here's what I told AP in response:

The Arkansas Times wants no special treatment. It wants only the public services routinely given on request to media that regularly cover the Capitol. That means timely distribution of news releases and timely notice of the governor's general press availability. We once received such notices. For reasons unclear to us, the governor decided to blackball the Arkansas Times. It will be, for one, difficult to attend news conferences about which we are no longer informed.

Contrary to what the governor says, all the information we seek is not available on his website, including the news conference notices.

Legal questions aside, the governor sent a chilling message with this action. That's why, when the governor of Maryland put a less restrictive ban on two Baltimore newspaper writers (they still received news releases and press conference notices), every major press organization rose to the Baltimore Sun's defense. The good news is that, in eight months, Huckabee seems likely to be succeeded by a governor who understands that you don't have to win a popularity contest to receive equal public services.

Huckabee is such an f-ing liar.

Getting a little defensive, aren't we? I guess tromping on the First Amendment isn't polling well.

He has stolen a page, if not an entire chapter, from wife Janet's book, "An Idiot's Guide To How (Not) To Run For Public Office." This is really funny were it not for you guys getting screwed over.
Remember, Stephen Colbert, according to his (Colbert's) schedule, has His Petulancy on at 10:30 tonight.

BOYCOTT HUCK! BOYCOTT HUCK! If nobody shows up from the media, who is he going to "preach" to?

...most accessible governor the citizens of this state have seen...

He's modest to boot.

...It is apparent this tabloid's editor is behaving like a hobo who, when provided free food from a restaurant, proceeds to tell everyone it tastes bad and then wonders why he isn't invited to have the best table in the house for free...

Huck, your office is not akin to any private entity therefore your analogy sucks. Your office is a public entity that comes with all the ensuing obligations. Further, the Times was not getting its news 'meal' free; us citizens pay for that service 'cause it's kinda important. It's not nice of you to use that service as your own personal tool of retribution.

And, I doubt Max ever thought he'd get the best of anything from you.

All in all, a very dishonest assessment of his motivations and conduct.

Somebody ought to find out...while they're reviewing the Governor's Appearance Schedule over the past months...what requests for appearances he TURNED DOWN...in order to jump his jet and fly off for his Presidential Hopeful appearances. Sometimes what you say NO to is more telling than what you say YES to. It's a fact that he was speaking at an out of state barbeque for political purposes instead of attending the funeral of a state trooper killed in the line of duty. Not very good with priorities... Requests for appearances are submitted through his schedulers...isn't that available under FOI?

He got it in! I knew he would! He got it in TWICE!

"It", of course, is to ridicule his "opponent" by calling him a "whiner". I guess Rush L. started this, and Republicans love to use the word. Anybody who disagrees with them or complains about them is said to be whining.

It's fairly effective, if people aren't aware that it's a ploy, an action specifically calculated to frustrate an opponent. Nobody likes an obnoxious whiner, and when you call somebody that they are seen as whining, whether they actually are or not.

OK, I have some extra help today at the fruit stand so I had time to read Huck's dribble. The most glaring omission I saw is that the high and mighty Reverend doesn't explain why the Times originally was getting this kind of information and was only recently cut off.

I see he is warming up for the real journalists at Comedy Central with the last few sentences. Funny stuff. Well, not really, but maybe he's getting his game face on.

Max, you gonna take being called a hobo and a whiner? Those are gauntlet throwing words.

this line from huck's essay makes no sense:

No, we don't notify every single tabloid, magazine, radio station or blog site because my intent is wide dissemination of information in as accurate and timely and efficient manner as is possible.

how does adding an email address affect accuracy, timeliness or efficiency? not to mention the contradiction of excluding news organizations for the sake of "wide dissemination."

I still want to know why I pay a subscription to the Arkansas Times and I'm always reading where it is a "free newspaper" in Hillcrest. Is this a
fundamentalist conspiracy to try and keep me from reading the Times? Inqusitive minds would like to know.

We should anticipate the Huckster becoming even more petulant as the end of his administration draws near. Life as the ex-governor of Arkansas is going to be a lot different --- abruptly and rudely different --- and he is already beginning to sense the loss of power.

This time next year, Mike Huckabee will be mostly a memory. Getting press coverage of any kind is going to become more and more difficult after he leaves office. In a couple of years, you should consider running a Whatever-happened-to-Huckabee? article, just to remind everyone that Mikey may be gone but the Arkansas Times lives on.

On a somewhat similar note, the new White House Chief of Staff just announced that the White House may stop allowing televising of the daily White House press briefings.

"I still want to know why I pay a subscription to the Arkansas Times and I'm always reading where it is a "free newspaper" in Hillcrest. Is this a
fundamentalist conspiracy..."

Don't know your proble. It is available in multiple locations in Conway. Now if you live out of state like one of my relatives, you might want a mailed copy and that costs real money. But you can read it on line even before it hits the boxes in Conway.

...if you live out of state like one of my relatives, you might want a mailed copy and that costs real money. But you can read it on line even before it hits the boxs...

I pay to get it sent to Pocahontas, of course, and am happy to. I much prefer newsprint in my hands, and ink on my hands, to reading online. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways!

Max, you were only an email address list. Someone had to be directed to go and remove your name. I doubt that the bro-gov could do it himself. Tha was the use of state employees in retaliation for an alleged offense. That should be available in the form of some documention under FOI, even if it is a hand-written note.

Too bad the 3rd in line for the head of AR state government doesn't reverse the change when the gov takes another of his trips on HuckAir.

You could also give some white space to a list of all of the bro-gov's thoughts for the day. And I am sure that you have one of those flattering pictures that would fit just under the Arkansas Times' name on the cover of next week's addition. And to really be a Horses A--, have some members of the weekly press association attend all of his out-of-state shows to bring up his feelings about the 1st Amendment along with the 2nd. A question about how his view of Wayne Dumond relates to GWB's on "looking into Putin's eyes".

Hey max, this is fun! Why not an open column on how to give the bro-gov's attitdes the most exposure on a national basis if Steven Colbert doesn't stop his campaign cold on tonight's show.

I don't consider Huckabee a legimate governor, can I have the portion of his salary that I paid back please?

I love how the Huckster keeps shouting about the blatant and irresponsible lies the Times is writing, and yet he can't cite a single one. And he calls Max a whiner. Jeeze...

Personally, I hope Colbert dismantles King Slim in front of the whole country tonight. That would so sweet.

AT, I do think the Gov is wrong, but I will paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen and say, "We know the Baltimore Sun..."

ARK. BLOG But that's precisely the point the blockheads are missing. The landmark First Amendment cases have just about always turned on unpopular figures -- the KKK, the Nazis, the Jehovahs in WW II. It's much harder to abridge the rights of large and powerful and popular people and organizations. In a sense, you have to give the Maryland credit for more moxie in going after the Sun. It is indeed our very small size that makes the Huck's decision to avenge himself with some petty retaliationi all the more mystifying. He's conferred credibility on us nationally.

Tha Arkansas Times should be called "The Hillcrest-Quapaw Democrat" and Max should get a job with a real newspaper that people will actually pay for and he wouldn't have to live off of his wife's salary as a Judge.
65% of this state elected the Governor twice so doesn't that mean that 65% of this state thinks you are a smuck...

ARK. BLOG: I do appreciate my wife's support. But the Arkansas Times is more than three decades old and has spawned related media companies that employ maybe 100 people and generate more than $9 million in revenue. We did it without corporate welfare, too. I'm happy with the money I make and never thought newspapering would make me wealthy in any case.

PS -- You might want to check that 65 percent figure. It was a good bit lower. But as I've said elsewhere, this isn't a popularity contest. It's about equal access to publicly financed services. Those who believe punishment is appropriate response by public officials who don't like news outlets would love Stalinism.

Maybe the legitimate criticism here is that the gov's press staff should put press releases on the website earlier. But that's not what you're asking. You want to be treated exactly like the Democrat-Gazette and other established daily newspapers You guys aren't a newspaper of record (and you don't try to be), so why should you have traditional newspaper privileges extended to you? Small publications, especially overtly political ones who don't like the governor because of party affiliations, don't get the same privileges that large, objective news outlets get. If you want those privileges, you should see if the D-G is hiring.

ARK. BLOG: You're wrong in so many ways. The minute you start talking about who's qualified for press privileges your're talking press licensing and that's un-American not to mention unconstitutional. But forget that. We cover, for example, a heckuva lot more breaking political news than the local TV stations, who routinely receive notice of press conferences. The same for radio stations and undoubtedly others. It's a simple standard under the FOI. If you request notice, you get it. It should be no different here on governor's releases. Viewpoint is irrelevant. But I'm happy to guide you, if you'd like to call, to a number of solid straight news articles we've done on Arkansas political topics, prize winners and others. Again, it's irrelevant, but some of them even hold Huckabee in a favorable light.

He has only eight more months to play "gotcha" with you so, as his fellow "christians" do, he will use his God given time to smirk and preen and show you who has the power. He's just another punk who appeals to that same quality in those who defend him. Sad little fellow, isn't he? Of course, he does have that wifely cross around his neck so he may deserve some pity.

Mike Huckabee the citizen, voter, and taxpayer may read whatever he chooses and considers legitimate news. Mike Huckabee the politician can take whatever public stand he chooses to disagree with the editorial position of any publication, as long as he doesn't take an official stand. Those are his rights.

But Governor Mike Huckabee, paid public servant, has no right to use that office to filter out what others consider a legitimate news source.

The AT---fair and balanced. Then why do I always feel like I leaning heavily to the left after reading it?

ARK. BLOG We thought our readers were all smart and sophisticated, even the conservatives. We thought they'd appreciate a touch of irony in our using that headline -- taken from Fox News -- to describe our little tiff with the governor. We DID give his side. But make no mistake, the item describes this publication as left-leaning in our editorial positions. We make no bones or apologies for that. We do careful reporting and we draw conclusions as well;. When a politician lies, as Huckabee has, we're going to say so.

Max,

It just means that now you can really take the gloves off and go after him. However, it would only be a waste of his limited remaining term and picking on a politician facing a dead end.

Governor Huckabee's stature and character are the same size as his new waistline.

The sad truth is Huckabee is going to have fun, the AT could win the lawsuit, but in the end the only loser a is the people of Arkansas. They will foot the legal bill and Huckabee won't have to shell out a dime in personal money on this. He doesn't have to care, it doesn't hurt him personally.

Not to be a nudge...but the correct spelling of the word is schmuck.

If you're going to call someone a name, at least spell it right

www.arkansas.gov/governor/media/gems/05022006-1.html

Media Gems indeed

I fart Huckabees.

Huckabee is on KARN AM920 and FM 102.9 every first Wednesday of the month at around 9:06 am. I assume the next edition is TOMORROW. There's no reason why you liberals can't call in and ask for clarification on this issue. You may have to be a little creative to get by the call screener, so try to act normal. By the way, call early and often. Don't wait until near the end of the show if you actually want to get on the program.

"The program airs each month on ARN stations statewide. It features comments and questions from listeners. Those wishing to speak with the governor Wednesday morning may call 1-866-275-8255 or (501) 433-8255. In central Arkansas, "Ask the Governor" can be heard on KARN, 920 AM and 102.9 FM."

I forgot to mention the best part. After the governor's program, there is usually feedback about the governor on the Kevin Gordan program immediately following. That's another wonderful opportunity to exercise your freedom of speech. For you liberals who have problems with public speaking and communicating, I'd recommend that you join a Toastmasters club (www.toastmasters.org). There are many excellent clubs throughout the state.

The guy needs to go back to the pulpit where lies and hyperbole are acceptable and even lauded by the sheeple.

What a pathetic excuse for a governor.

"65% of this state elected the Governor twice so doesn't that mean that 65% of this state thinks you are a smuck..."

First of all, Huckabee toady, it's "schmuck."

Second of all, Huckabee did NOT get 65 percent twice. In 1998 against Bill Bristow Huckabee got 59.8%. This is impressive only in the context of Winthrop Rockefeller and Frank White, the state's other two GOP governors since Reconstruction. Bill Clinton topped 60% in his 1978, 1984 and 1986 re-election campaigns. So did Dale Bumpers in 1972 and David Pryor in 1976.

In 2002 against Jimmie Lou Fisher, Huckabee got 53%--the lowest general election re-election percentage for a governor in Arkansas history.

When Huckabee lost 110 pounds, his skin apparently got correspondingly thinner. Picking and choosing which media get public information (not exclusive interviews or scoops, just basic public information) is a strategy right out of Nazi Germany and Communist China.

Sig heil, Alice Goebbels and Fuehrer Huckabee.

"whining". When the dittoheads say this, I say "Man, you are really whining about this whining!".

Shuts them up everytime.

The only thing he'll be remembered for is releasing a man convicted for raping a relative of Bill Clinton only to see him back behind bars for rape-murdering two other women.

Controlling the Message is what it is all about. Just as national Republican figures will not dare face a one on one reporter other than Faux News when the story could use some real hard hitting questions.

Stick a fork in him though, he's done.

Here's my suggestion -

Have Acting Gov. Argue issue an executive order mandating all forms of media who are members of the AR Press Assoc or some such org & who request to be added to the email list must be added, blah, blah 1st amendment, etc.

...an executive order mandating all forms of media who are members of the AR Press Assoc or some such org...

I consider organizations like the press assn. and the American Medical Assn. to be private clubs, like the Boy Scouts. They aren't governmental entities. You should not have to join a private club to qualify for press releases. And size of circulation shouldn't be the decider, either. You shouldn't have to be big to receive consideration.

Agreed, though. We need a criterion other than letting the Governor decide based on whether he likes you or not. How about anybody who wants to be notified will be notified? That may be the only fair way to do it, even if it opens up some slight possibility that every student on the U of A campus will request notification.

In this day of computers the request process could be automated on a website...just sign up and you get the mass e-mail. No human intervention required. Takes the same work and low cost to notify 2 people or 20,000.

Well...can you blame Huckabee? You liberal, whiney bitches don't deserve a response to dignify your lame democrat view....

You liberal, whiney bitches don't deserve a response to dignify your lame democrat view....Posted by: DBrown

Man, you are really whining there! I guess whining is all you Bush Babies have left.

(And thanks, Mark, it DOES work!)

Patrick shoots....he scores!!!!

Yay for our team!

The Governor is doing this because he can get away with it. Even if Max were correct, and I doubt he is, Huckabee knows Max is all talk and no action. This will be a non issue within a week. Max will move on to other things and the Gov will continue to slight the AT. Same song 3rd verse.

After minutes of careful research I am prepared to submit that our Governor could be suffering from one or several combinations of psychological disorders.

1. Christ complex

Christ complex (also superiority complex) is a psychological term used loosely to describe any individual mentally fixed on superiority or the claim of being a savior. There are many types of disorders in which the Christ complex comes into play.
The extreme example is a psychopath: Someone who comes to operate without any regard for other humans.

Or maybe.....

2. nar·cis·sism (när'sĭ-sĭz'əm) pronunciation also nar·cism (-sĭz'əm)
n.

1. Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See synonyms at conceit.
2. A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.
3. Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.
4. The attribute of the human psyche characterized by admiration of oneself but within normal limits.

Or perhaps.....

3. meg·a·lo·ma·ni·a (mĕg'ə-lō-mā'nē-ə, -mān'yə) pronunciation
n.

1. A psychopathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence.
2. An obsession with grandiose or extravagant things or actions.

I think we could spend all next week picking and choosing, mixing and matching different lines from above that most clearly represent the behavior of our Huckster over the last couple of years.

Do we have a state psychiatrist? Can the Arkansas House or Senate call an emergency meeting and get our Governor some help here before he strips another gear? Is Janet concerned too? Did Huck do anything crazy today while Janet was lumbering around Fort Smith with Mrs. B?

Max you forget- DON"T criticize the preacher!

The Gov will apparently never understand the difference between a bully pulpit, and the real thing. "course , he ain't the real thing...

The Huckster puts more pictures of himself in his press releases than I had done AT MY WEDDING.

Sheesh.

Knowing Dumond's victim, and her going through what she did to contest his parolel, one can easily say I've scraped better than Huckabee off my shoe after feeding the dog.

You should really go the other way with this. Glamorize the vote stealing Mrs. Huckabee, like the next Jackie O wannabe, the most glamorous woman since, ohhh Marilyn Quayle, Babs, or Condi.

Meanwhile look up the Olive Group , Dubai Ports World Authority, and Fallujah scale recreations in the Huckster's home state that train mercenaries. He's helping usher in the new worlkd order faster than you think.

In the new version of freedom to Oilraq, women have to wear head scarves. Why not Mrs. Huck finn?

Could be they're just another lousy bag of hypocrisy. Same old GOP we've always endured.

Clinton was the best GOP Governor and President we've ever had. Don't forget that fact. He was a better republican than any of the modern era.

Fare and balanced. Faux news comes with a price tag. "Follow the Money."

Weaknesses of the Narcissistic Leader

As they garner adulation and success, these leaders begin to feel invincible. They ignore cautionary words and take flagrant risks. They listen only to information they seek and begin dominating subordinates (e.g., Steve Jobs publicly humiliates employees). Other problems follow:

Sensitivity to criticism. Unimaginably thin-skinned, narcissists can't tolerate dissent. They say they want teamwork but really want yes-men.

Lack of empathy. They crave empathy but are not empathetic themselves. They can be brutally exploitative.

Intense desire to compete. They pursue victory ruthlessly, often unrestrained by conscience and convinced that threats abound. ("Only the paranoid survive," Andy Grove of Intel maintains.)

As potatoes go this is small compared to the tubers they're raising in DC:

*Reclassifing already made public information
* sealing all former president's papers forever unless it makes Clinton look bad
*a barrage of misinformation that led to the blood bath in Iraq now taking aim at Iran
* Dick Cheney's secret "energy" task force
*stalling, stonwalling and undermining any investigation of nine eleven

.................... and so it goes.........
...........................But.............
small potatoes sure do taste good with plenty of salt, pour it heavy on and watch the slimey slugs of creeping facism sizzle and melt.
