Banks goes negative

Republicans are buzzing about a new round of attack ads Chuck Banks has launched on Jim Holt in the race for lt. gov. If we can ever find a link to the sound file, we'll post it. The laugh line is Banks' describing Holt as a tax-and-spender on account of a one vote for a little tax to pay for pre-K education in Arkansas. We believe we saw in the paper the other day that Holt had repented of this singular instance of sanity in his long "service" in the legislature.

This attack ad might be a way to close the gap with Holt in the Republican primary. (Though we're not so sure.) But we wouldn't want to be looking for crossover Democratic votes on the platform: "I'm nuttier than Jim Holt."

We've put text of one ad on the jump.

I am Chuck Banks and I paid for and authorized this message: (female voice follows)

Lt Gov Candidate Jim Holt has a bad habit of making promises and then doing just  the opposite and usually at taxpayers' expense.  Holt says the state shouldn't be educating our children and is opposed to Pre-K programs. But in the 01 legislative session Senator Holt voted for millions in new taxes that funded new Pre-K programs.  While raising cain about the waste in state government Holt didn't even show up for a  Senate Committee hearing that voted to spend $186,000 taxpayer dollars to renovate senate offices including his own.  Now Jim Holt says he wants to use the Lt. Governor's office to push his own personal agenda  and make the position full time.   And how much will that cost us, Mr. Holt?  There is just no way we can afford Jim Holt's taxing, spending, and self serving ways.  Jim Holt:  Promise maker; promise breaker.

Jim Holt or Chuck Banks will make a fine Lt. Governor. Either one will work well with our new governor Asa Hutchinson. They will cut spending and taxes and will work well with our new congressman Andy Mayberry in bringing us out of the liberal representation in Washington by Snyder. Vic will make a fine stay at home dad.

This is the kind of magical thinking you get from someone too dull to have a distinctive screen name.

Pavel-

I think you have been had.

I think the post by anonymous was joke. No one in their right mind (no matter how far right it is) could possibly believe what was written.

It is well known in political circles that Asa has a dislike of Holt and Holt of Asa. They will not be able to work together (of course both would have to be elected which is an impossibility).

In truth the only viable chance the Republicans have of getting a Constitutional Office is with Banks.

Banks is the only Republican candidate that would have any crossover appeal to Dems.

Banks spent the first 6 months telling people that he was not running "against either of these fine gentelmen (Holt and Doug Matayo) but running FOR Lt. Governor", and honoring Ronald Reagan (whose 11th commandment was "thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican) then he spends the last two weeks running the stupidist attack ads I have ever heard. Nobody is going to buy Holt as a tax and spender.

This is bad news for the Democrats in the long run though. Republicans are starting to catch on that Richard Bearden and Terry Benham (they run Banks campaign) are grossly incompetent campaign consultants. Without them sucking up big bucks and giving bad advice to top-tier Republican candidates in this state, the GOP might start running smarter races.

I'm sure you're right, whosbeenhad. I was just trying to encourage the "Anonymous" posters to use some other name.

What's even funnier is that Mark Moore has found his way to this site (see "now that's funny). This is the same crap he and the koolaide drinkers have been spewing for weeks.
Banks said that he'd follow Reagan's 11th Commandment IF the opponent stayed true to Reagan principles. Holt has not. Therefore Go Get 'em Chucky!

Banks has a certain amount of appeal to cross over voters. Holt? Not.

Since when is telling the truth going negative?

ARK. BLOG A good question. Worth a term paper. And we should say that negative is not a bad thing in our view, necessasrily. Emphasizing another candidate's demerits is undeniably a negative campaign strategy, but it is a fair tactic and often productive. It is also fair to term it negative when one candidate questions another's honesty, as Banks does in this ad. Also fair tactic. Also potentially productive. But it is a marked shift from emphasizing one's own positives and, thus, of interest in the political game-watching category.

LIke most Arkansas voters, I almost always vote in the Democratic primary. But on occasion, a hardy demagogue will pull me over to the dark side to cast a vote among the demons. Tommy Robinson certainly attracted my vote against him. Holt was about to likewise motivate me. Banks seemed like an obvioius choice. Now I think I had better stay home with the Dems and figure out which one is most preferable to Wooldridge.

Hutchinson-Banks-8 years...sounds good to this Arkansas family !!!!!

If you don't have a link to the spot, can you post the text of it?

Banks has not broke the "11th commandment"

To do so, he would have had to have talked bad about another Republican.

We do not claim Jim Holt and is Holtianites as Republicans.

Keep on preahing it anonymous (i.e. 1:18)!

"...honoring Ronald Reagan (whose 11th commandment was "thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican)..."

Ronald Reagan didn't exactly follow his own advice. When he ran against President Ford in the 1976 presidential primaries, Reagan certainly "spoke ill" of another Republican:

"Reagan's primary campaign strategy revolved around attacking President Ford. He strongly disagreed with Presidents Nixon and Ford's policies of Detente with the Soviet Union, and consequently opposed the SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) agreement that Nixon and Ford had made with the USSR to curb nuclear armament. Also contrary to Nixon's and Ford's policies, Reagan wanted to cool relations with communist China and support the struggling Chinese nationalists in Taiwan. Furthermore, he disagreed with President Ford's pardon to those who had dodged the drafts during the Vietnam War. Finally, Reagan blamed Ford for the budget deficit, and referred to him as a poor leader."

The "11th commandment" is one of many Reagan-related fantasies--cutting taxes and raising defense spending resulting in a balanced budget; "Star Wars"; air pollution caused by trees; "welfare queens" buying vodka with food stamps; against tax increases(when in fact Reagan in 1982 signed into law TEFRA, a $214 billion tax increase over five years, the largest tax increase in American history [$441 billion] in inflation adjusted terms). And the list goes on and on.

I'll be asking for a Republican ballot...mainly because of some close ties to local races that may require runoffs...but also because I want to do my part in keeping Holt available for the General Election.

Every candidate has their bad spot. as well as their good spot. I like Jim Holt because Holt made a promise to me and then KEPT IT. However, we must remember that these are politicians and therefore have all lied at least once when they said they were qualified. ALSO they are human which means they have all made mistakes.

Also, Banks has never been above breaking the 11th commandment. Everytime I hear him he is putting Jim Holt down. If he can not take the high road then what is the use in traveling there.

Gee 2:47 I did not know you Holtites could stay off the ArkFamBlog long enough to post your lies here.

He tried taking the high road. You uneducated constitutionists have thrown so much "moderate" and "hate mongering" mud that Banks came down to your level to give you a taste of your own medicine.

He tried taking the high road- he only resorted to personal attacks because taking the high road wasn't working for him!

Sorry, the good Ole Boy act did not get him what he wanted. Now we see the real man.

I'd like to see your prissy NWA self wallow with the hogs and not get muddy. Yeah, it wouldn't happen. Go back to that "family" website where the other hypocrits post all day long.

Mr. Brantley:

I believe the point of the criticism is the Senator Holt is inconsistant. Chuck was not trying to convince voters Holt was a liberal.

ARK. BLOG Ah, but you can't have it both ways. His announcer sneers about the tax increase. Would Banks favor it? Does he favor expanding pre-K education? If not, why not? If he does, how does he propose to pay for it?

Max,
Chuck has said that he favors our own research into Pre-K. He has never said that we should mandate it. He has been consistent with this issue since he announced in October.
Holt stated earlier this primary season that "government has no business educating our children." But then you look at Holt's voting record. It is a public record for all to see. Maybe you should look into it - especially the racist backed bill SB 206. Joey McCutchen ring any bells?

If someone could even give me any evidence that Holt makes any decisions on his own without someone else sitting down with him at the kitchen table to help him with it, I'd be surprised. It really takes a narrow-minded, intolerant, office-hungry, one-track-mind having JERK to run for the Senate on a PROTECT MARRIAGE campaign. Jim Holt stinks.

HOLT IS ONE OF THE MOST HONEST, CHRISTIAN MEN I HAVE MET. HE HAS DONE A FANTATIC JOB AND WOULD BE AN ASSET TO ASA.

Hey, shouter, being honest and Christian does not automatically qualify one for holding public office. A person can quite easily be honest, Christian, and stupid, or honest, Christian, and bigoted, or honest, Christian, and uneducated.
