Anyways, let's look at history. Throughout the course of history, there's always be xenophobes: irrational and hate mongering. At the end of the day, have they ever really won?

The Democrats and the Republican businessmen are for illegal immigration to some extent (socially or economically or both). The Republican businessmen speak louder than any other group, pro- or anti-immigration. Therefore, Frist and brothers can condemn illegals till the cows come home, but they probably already know what the answer is:

Illegals are here to stay.

They just put a show on for the dupes that make up the majority of the Republican party. The "backwash" in that 2/3 empty cup of Bush supporters, as Colbert said.

I understand that illegal aliens don?t pay any taxes. How does this work? Do they get some sort of document they can present to merchants that exempts them from paying taxes?

You lefties can draw some solace that you are in bed with business on this one. Does that make them 'good guys' now? Are they smarter?

I went to La Hacienda last week. Although not white, the owners and workers are legal.

But I'm with you on your other points.

Obviously illegals pay sales tax. A large number of them work on phony papers and as a result wages are withheld and sent to the state and Federal governments for income taxes and there are also payments made to FICA and Medicare, etc.

Now illegals working for cash, aren't paying those taxes, except sales taxes.

If the illegal rents a place to live they indirectly pay the property tax on the residence since one would presume the landlord sets rent high enough to cover the property taxes.

Everytime you buy a Tyson chicken, or get a burger at McDonald's, or buy almost anything at the supermarket, you are supporting illegal immigration. We may not always have a choice but to buy these products, but let's not fool ourselves either. A large part of our nice, comfortable lifestyle is built on the backs of illegal immigrant labor.

A lot of people will bitch and moan about illegals, but not many are going to give up their frozen chicken nuggets.

I just flew in the house from the big Hispanic protest march in Fort Smith and boy are my arms tired. My daughter and her classmate and I were one of the few white people in the march. There were a few others who appeared to be dating or married to a Hispanic person.

I'd guess the size of the crowd at between 300 and 400 people. Being in the group made it hard to judge the size of the crow, but there were at least that many peaceful people marching with banners and signs.

Did it make me a little nervous? You bet! Did I make them a little nervous, obviously I did make the ones who couldn't read my sign a little uneasy at first. When they saw I was clapping at the right spots, they figured out the girls and I were on their side.

There was a group of Chris Quimby's with their Mexicans Go Home signs. I'd guess about 8 of them and fine examples of white people they were. Several of them wore coon skin caps.....always a sure sign of intelligence. There might have been 2 good sets of teeth between the 8 of them. They made sure they stayed in front by the TV cameras the whole time.

These fine examples of white-dom hooted and hollered at me, looking for a fight, but I ignored them. Finally as their taunts to the crowd became too inflammatory, one of the many cops pointed out they had no permit to march and suggested they go away.

They were too lazy to do any more walking anyway, so they walked off, no doubt planning a little evil with their sister/mother when they got home.

The surprise of it all for me was running into the real Jo Carson who managed to hand out 250 new voter registration cards. She pointed out the states lone young Hispanic Republican who apparently is the Hispanic poster boy for that party. Jo said he's the one on the billboards...guess I'll have to pay closer attention, I didn't know him. But glad he was there too. And good work Jo!

So....a nice peaceful protest march and a good civics lesson for my daughter and her friend. I saw no killers, or thugs, or drug dealers or Al Qaeda. I didn't see anyone who wanted to steal my wife, or my car or my house or my job. I didn't see anyone wanting a hand out or a free ride. I saw lots of families chanting We Love the USA.

By the end of the march many of those gathered were smiling at me and the girls and many of them walked up and said thank you for supporting us. I guess I'm getting old, because it kinda made me want to cry a little bit. It sure enough made me feel good and my daughter told me I was pretty cool. How can you beat that?

In the future, should another rally or protest of this kind come along, I'd suggest to the more liberal non-haters on this blog that they consider taking the time off to join in. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

I love people who care enough about a cause to get active, protest, whatever...even if I disagree with a particular cause.

I'm sure a few have indeed signed up. Perhaps more, as a percent of the population, than native-born Americans.

I think, for many people, feelings about Latinos mirrors feelings for Congress. Most people can't stand Congress, but they vote for their own Congressman. Likewise, I think a good number of people who don't much like "Hispanics" would be perfectly willing to befriend the nice guy serving them at the local restaurant.

Being as far as you can get from Mexico/South America while still being in Arkansas, we have just a tiny handful of Hispanics here in Pocahontas. They are most prominent for being the only people who walk across the Black River bridge here, walking to work at the El Acapulco restaurant since they are the only people in the city who don't have a car. They are all neat, clean, courteous, and a credit to humanity.

There are a lot of locals I'd be happy to see leave this place. None of the Hispanics are among that group.

And where might we ship you back to???

Lest you misunderstand my comment, I welcome legal immigrants. I do not welcome illegal residents. And I do not advocate mistreating them.

But, in this age of symbolic gestures, if the Mexican food restaurants choose to demonstrate their solidarity with illegal residents by closing and marching together, then it seems appropriate to demonstrate solidarity with the law by not patronizing them.

"They" are not the only culprits but they are probably the most visible institution that can be impacted.

When battles are fought (and if you watch and listen to the video, there is little doubt that this is a battle), sometimes the good guys get hurt too.

So - what about the big guys? Can't do much to impact Tyson's but then again, how could Tyson's stay open and operate when most of their workers, both legal and illegal, are out demonstrating their support for lawlessness?

On the other hand, maybe we should just ignore the marchers. Their absence today had no visible impact on my work. Maybe it impacted others.

Probably created a few job openings, too.

And tomorrow, there will probably be more newly arrived illegal residents available to fill those new job openings.

If you're so concerned about lawbreaking, then please start with Bush & Cheney, as they are the ones who are supposed to set the highest example.

Conservatives always seem to be very selective in the sort of lawbreaking that gets them upset. Complaints about illegal immigration are just one more case in point. Of course, we ignore all the lawbreaking that makes it so difficult for folks to stay and make a living where they were born. That goes without saying, just as violations of labor laws have been SOP for 25 years, since Reagan took office in 1981.

But at a time when the President has repeatedly stated his intention to conitnue violating FISA, when the Boston Globe reports over 750 "signing statements" where Bush tries to unilaterally re-write laws Congress has passed (including the recently-passed ban on torture), it just seems too obvious to ignore: If you want folks to respect the law, then you need to have that respect for law demonstrated by those at the highest levels of government. That is a baseline starting point for any serious effort to promulgate respect for the law.

OTOH, it's a good rule of thumb that when one person breaks a law, the person is a fault. When millions break a law, the law is at fault. It's not always true, of course. Traffic laws are a good counter-example.

But the failure of prohibition (the result of a movement that started as temperance before mutating into prohibilition) is an instructive example that we ought to consider more often when faced with massive disobedience. The result of prohibition was to make liquour much more readily available. Even pre-teen kids could get it quite easily--something that never happened before Prohibition. Similarly, tightening the border in recent years has prevented many people from returning to Mexico when they otherwise would, because of the difficulty of coming back.

When faced with such mass behavior, it just makes sense to try to craft laws with a minimum of foreseeable (not to mention already visible) perverse impacts. It's a whole lot more effective than throwing tantrums.

Economic blackmail. This is what it has come down to. First a protest against the federal government taking action against law breakers. Now, blackmail in order to persuade the federal government not to punish law breakers.

In this case the law breakers being illegal immigrants.

I didn't need a boycott to show me how immigrants contribute to the economy. It's a lot, yes I know.

Sad, is the pickle the federal government has got us into in how much our economy has come to rely on an illegal workforce. But, it is not a option to just let an illegal immigrant just stay without paying some restitution for the law they broke be it 2 years ago, 20 years ago - whatever. It is not an option to let an illegal set of the population have its way with the laws.

I want hard working people to live in this country and welcome them with open arms - really. If I decided to live or become a citizen in another country I would follow that country's naturalization process. Immigrants who circumvent this system are being sneaky, underhanded and I tend not to trust them.

I don't care if they run a fortune 500 company. If an immigrant is not a legally naturalized citizen - they must become one. There is something very wrong and bassackwards about protesting a government on its home soil when you don't pay taxes to that government and the services it provides.

It's not that black and white. Because illegals have not registered them selves so as to be accountable for what they contribute or don't contribute - in this case tax money - it makes it hard to track this set of the population.

The ones that do have their income taxed yet are not able to partake in social services that this tax money funds is not noble or a get out of jail free card. They are just playing the system and have found a way to work around it hoping to not be detected. That's intentional, it's sneaky and its wrong.

Illegal immigrants paying taxes does not mitigate or releave them, the illegals that don't a pay any taxes or even their employers - who for one reason or another turn a blind eye and harbor them - from what is right and what is wrong.
