Murderers' row
Free speech? Not so fast, if government wants to punish a whistleblower. So says the "strict constructionist posse" of Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy, Alito and Roberts. Despite their professed adoration for the original text of the Constitution, they've found a way in which government may limit free speech without consequence.

Feel that choking feeling? It's gotten a lot worse the last 5 years. In fact it's gotten the worst it's been in 230 years.
Think the Supreme Court is your friend? The same folks that handed us Bush in the first place, now only packed more tightly with people who would gladly take all our rights away and hand them to the government and big business.
Think about this the next time you see something wrong going on at work. Let them pitchfork the baby, you'll never work again if you pucker up and blow that whistle.

Hasn't emperor Bush already ruled that speaking out against the government is treason and supporting terrorism? That is why they have to analyze all phone calls and emails running on AT&T's network.

We are going to have to get used to that particular 5/4 split in court votes.
Boring subject...move on Posted by: Anonymous
The word "dull" does come to mind here. I'm not referring to the subject matter, but to the mind of someone who finds this ruling boring.

DBI, they didn't give us Bush. They gave him to us sooner. The recount ordered by Florida's Supreme Court has been shown that it would have given us Bush once completed. The only way Gore would have won would have been if the Florida Supreme Court had ordered the recount performed the way Bush asked for it.
As to this speech case, it is clear that the so-called conservative majority is not especially cohesive because this was a very narrowly drawn line.
Posted by: Well | May 30, 2006 12:29 PM
What's really special is how the same people who brought us the Thomas/Scalia/Alito/Roberts Court constantly blather on about activist judges...sheesh, those troglodytes invented the term.
You either believe in Free Speech and all those other pesky Constitutional concerns regardless of partisan agenda or you're just another partisan hack/thug who's sold his/her patriotic soul for immediate gratification and glory.
Oh yeah dbi...I feel that choking feeling every day I peruse the current day's news. I can't believe what's happened to my country; I can't believe America's been so thoroughly screwed by the right-wing, religious-nut gang.

I'm always entertained by simpletons who use that tired old line, "if you don't like it go live somewhere else".
Yeah, they'd like that. But no. We will be hanging around trying to stop the slide toward a police state, trying to move the country back on track.
If for no other reason than that it drives "anonymous" crazy, we're not going anywhere!

Dear silly anon,
Your monotonous one-liners reveal a lack of intellectual honesty and originality...must be a full-fledged Bush Baby.

So much for actual justice and truth.

Cannot wait, simply cannot wait to repay Mark Pryor for his yea vote on Alito in November 2008. For those who say he's better than the Republican alternative, I say you're not just splitting hairs, you're into the how-many-angels-can-dance-on-a-head-of-a-pin realm. Senator Pryor deserves nothing short of removal for his police state-enabling ways, no matter who his opponent is.

When I hear these old zombie Republicans it reminds me of a cartoon I saw that was titled What Your Dog Really Hears. You can say Bad dog Ginger..bad bad dog Ginger and what your dog hears is Blah blah Ginger...blah blah blah Ginger..
Gore didn't really win. Don't like it leave it, move on......blah blah blah blah blah blah Ginger! Such bad Americans.
Posted by: Deathbyinches | May 30, 2006 01:22 PM
Well, which urban legend are you quoting today? The recount versions I have read were equivocal about who would have won due to interpretation of the pin punch butterfly ballot.
But in any case, the "anti-big government", "fiscally conservative" Republican machine went into overdrive to have Bush selected rather than allowing the local (state) authorities to handle it. Of course, they were afraid that the local authorities would be as partisanly biased as they are.
So we have a six-year disaster of a holder of the presidency with zero fiscal discipline, zero concept of his constitutional duties, zero capability of civil debate, zero capability of speaking the truth but unbounding ability to disbelieve in his mistakes.
Congratulations on manipulating the system for the benefit of Republicans , hopefully the Republic will survive it and the ethics resulting from the Contract with America.

hey anon, I fixed your post:
...the deficit has never been bigger..that's all that needs to be said....thanks to republican tax cuts for the rich accompanied by the war we have fallen further than any country in history.

Ouch...that hurts.
How pitiful to drag up some dead foreign guy in an attempt to escape culpability as a supporting fan of this idiotic, lying, incompetent, warmongering, environment-destroying, Civil Liberty destroying, un-American president.

I quote USA Today and Knight-Ridder who both did recounts.
The Bush era never shoulda happened but its Gore's fault for failing to use the services of Bill Clinton in any of the other states he might have won anyone of which would have given him the presidency. Arkansas, Tennessee, New Hampshire, Nevada. Take one just one and there is never a W presidency.
Pretty lame blaming the Supreme Court when it never even should have been in play.

Roland..our deficit means only the left pocket owes the right pocket....small percentage of GNP. Economy is smoking...sure wish you and zelda, the old bittie, were smart enough to get in on it...it's great !!!!!!1

Hey Well....what happened to sticking to that lie about Gore losing if they had been an actual recount in Florida.
You sure hopped off that dead horse in a hurry. Now it's Gore's fault because he didn't ask Clinton for help.
What will be your 3rd lie....blah blah blah Ginger? Keep trying, you're bound to hit some truth someday.

No and no.

Given the content of many of the anonymous posts on this blog, I doubt even that truism.

"the economy has never been better"?? Really? People who can't afford $2.50-3 a gallon gas, would disagree. I'd think the GM employees who no longer have a pension would disagree. I'd think the thousands of people from many industries who have seen their jobs be "outsourced" would disagree. I, who have been in danger of losing my job practically every year due to ongoing layoffs since 2000 certainly disagree.

Yep, and with the Republican open-door policy towards illegal immigrants about 12 million of those folks are in on the goodies....helping to fuel it all with cheap labor.

DBI I stick by the fact that USA Today and Knight-Ridder have both said Gore would have lost in a recount under the terms he asked for.
The National Opinion Research Center (University of Chicago) also evaluated and concluded that Bush would have won under the Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Volusia, only recount. Under the Florida Supreme Court ordered recount, and under Florida Supreme Court recount as being implemented locally. Again only under the Bush requested standard could Gore have won.
So other than the opinions of USA Today, the Miami Herald, Washington Post, Knight-Ridder, National Opinion Research Center and BDO Seidman, after their own recounts you are correct in asserting that it is lie that Supreme Court picked the president.
Gore failed to carry his home state and didn't even unleash Clinton to campaign Arkansas until it was lost.

Clearly, the anon in this thread, as in so many others, is the same person--witness his unique spelling "bittie" when addressing our beloved zelda. It's "biddy", whether you mean a hen or a "garrulous old woman" (not my words).
More importantly, though, your consistent resort to name-calling signals the essential emptiness of whatever you've posted, making it easier to identify and skip.
Post what you like, I'll just skip it. If zelda or anyone else cares to quote you in an attempt at debate, that's about all I'll see of your efforts.

The retards passed a tax cut for after their term and our stupid stock market keeps going down since.
Pass the cool aid or better yet, give me your credit card.

Hey Anonymous, you stupid shit - you're going to get screwed right along with the rest of us, but you're too stupid to know it.
Actually, all this bunch of crooks has done for you is send you a measly $300 tax refund. You are not only stupid, but greedy. You're willing for the country to collapse so you can get a tax tax cut like the big boys.
Only, the big boys would treat you like the worm you are if they ever even had occasion to be in the same room as you.

One of the best marksmen in the FBI was passing through a small town. Everywhere he saw evidences of the most amazing shooting. On trees, on walls, and on fences there were numerous bull's-eyes with the bullet hole in dead center. The FBI man asked one of the townsmen if he could meet the person responsible for this wonderful marksmanship. The man turned out to be the village anonymous idiot. "This is the best marksmanship I have ever seen," said the FBI man. "How in the world do you do it?"
"Nothing to it," said the idiot. "I shoot first and draw the circles afterward."

The nazis on our court responsible for this travesty share other qualities besides fascism. Thay are Roman Catholics and members of the extreme right wing Federalist Society along with Ann Coulter.
