Tell it like it was

A rainless Riverfest has meant big crowds, as this Brian Chilson photo Saturday night attests. You could hear Aaron Neville from our deck more than a mile away. Don't forget the Little Rocking Blog for reports from Jim Harris and Amy Brawner.

In my 30-plus years of regular concert attendance, few moments have been any more special than Aaron Neville's a capella rendition of "Amazing Grace," which closed the Nevilles' show. I had goose bumps on my goose bumps.
Meanwhile, Dwight Yoakam was set to play 9:30 until 11:00. But he didn't start until 9:55. The good news? He played until 12:15, extending the festival by 75 minutes all by himself

Old fogey here. As much as I like music, and Aaron Neville in particular, if you could hear him from more than a mile away, that and the crowds were two reasons to skip Riverfest.
Why? Why? I ask. Why must you attend concerts with heavy duty ear plugs or risk pemanent hearing loss? (Same thing with movies.)
In any case, it sounds like everyone who chose to be there had a good time.

Neville's guns weren't nearly as shiny as usual. "The touch/
the feel/
of co-coa but-terrrrrr..."

Dwight Yoakam was awesome, despite recurrent feedback and guitars going out of tune. His band was excellent as well. The Doobies did great, too. The closing fireworks show was worth the $15.00 admission price. We rated the weekend good but not great because:
1. The food was not that wonderful and was overpriced.
2. Drinks were overpriced and people should be allowed to bring their own water or water fountains should be readily available.
3. Lack of bathroom facilities and sanitation concerns on the north side.
We will be back next year, and we will just avoid the north side unless the sanitation/bathroom problems are resolved. And we will eat and drink in the existing restaurants and bars on site.
The cheese fries at Flying Saucer are really, really, good, and the beer was cold!

You can't have too many portopotties, so I think pj has a good point.
and yep, $4 beers and $3 sodas are rough on the wallet. Unfortunately, that's become one of the most important ways concert promotions make money, and it's unlikely to change at Riverfest or at any other event on that scale.
Food is another matter. I bought egg rolls and soft tacos for a buck a piece, and they were a good deal. You just have to pick and choose carefully.
I couldn't agree more about allowing water bottles or providing a way for the masses to fill up empty jugs with a hose. Hydration is a basic human need, and nobody should have to enganger their health because they bought a ticket (or a button) and then ran out of money.

Dwight was dee-lightful. I agree that the feedback was an issue all through the concert, but of course that's not his fault. What a tremendous musician and song-writer he is. I enjoyed my good seats, the breeze off the river, and the fabulous set he played. Hope next year has some more wonderful performers.
Anyone know if the Dixie Chicks are going to be on tour near here with their new album?

Thanks, TJ, next year I will try the tacos and eggrolls. I usually don't complain about anything, especially at the $15.00 ticket price for three days.
BUT, I still think that paying $4.00 for a 50 cent beer is pretty high. I only had one, because the potties were like a quarter of a mile away, and the soap and water was out.
On the Little Rock side, it was much better in terms of sanitation and bathroom facilities.
Had a great time anyway, and fireworks show was the best!!!
