What, no gay marriage?
Washington Post's lead story today is the Bush middterm strategy:
Confronting the worst poll numbers seen in the West Wing since his father went down to defeat, President Bush and his team are focusing on the fall midterm elections as the best chance to salvage his presidency and are building a campaign strategy around tax cuts, immigration and national security.
Oh, yeah, and there's also the "choice" theme. "We may be bad, but do you really think Democrats are better?"
The LA Times covers the restive right-wing base:
Some Republicans are so discouraged by the direction of the country and the record of their party —including the growth of federal spending, turmoil in Iraq, and Bush's immigration policy — that they have begun wondering if Republicans might be better off losing control of Congress.
"Two years in the political wilderness would do us a lot of good," said one Republican member of Congress who asked not to be named because of his heretical view.

'National security' is their ticket to success. It's something that can't be measured, and we're proven suckers for the specter of "boogeymen" under every bed. Run with it, BushCo, because you know it works.

Another OMG! One could only hope that someday the GOP would satisfy their need for greed but that just isn't in their diverged genome.
The GOP quicksand pit of patriotic deception and manipulation on behalf of the dollar and votes is relentless and bottomless
We need to prepare/reconcile ourselves for another patriotic/terroristic laden barrage of BS to toy/tickle our confusion meter already overflowing and coughing.

But now that a new and glorious Iraq government is on the job, Repubs won't need all that flag-waving scary crap.
Of course Repubs would be better off if the Dems take the fall for all their screw-ups. I'd be surprised if Rove doesn't already have a memo outlining what a glorious success Iraq was until the Dems cut and run...how cheap gas really was before the Dems picked on the red/white/blue oil companies...how New Orleans was well on its way to its glory days until...how tax cuts for millionaires had saved America until Dems burdened the country with taxes so Cadillac-driving, steak-eating, welfare-drawing single moms could have more children...how the Dems STOLE the elections so they could destroy the American family by spreading gayness and baby killing throughout the Homeland.

Zelda, you wrote everything I was just about to write! Indeed, the anonymous Republican member of congress said, "Two years in the political wilderness would do us a lot of good."
"Two years" means exactly what you said. They would use those two years to blame all the problems on the Democrats then sweep back into Congress and the White House in 2008. Oh, but they are plotters!

Yes, and especially this nation and its people.

A typical Republican coward, sitting anonymously hiding behind a computer screen, typing, coward. You brave, brave soul. Commie? Name calling? How about adding to the debate, rather than resorting to the cowardly and shameful "Christian?" antics of name calling? Let me guess...20 to 30 something, and haven't even given a thought to serving your country in Iraq?

Well patrick...I'm sticking with the 'great minds...' story!
More than likely though, Rove et all are so transparent and predictable in their redundancy, the village idiots could see all this coming.

Hey Zelda & Patrick...don't forget today is welfare check day...go get yours....commies
I've been called worse. I was called a troll recently regarding one of my more controversial theories on world hunger.
But I'm no communist. I think communism is a failed theory because it doesn't take human nature into consideration.
You can't expect people to work if they can get just about as good a living standard given to them freely by the state with no work. That's human nature.
Likewise, people respond positively to the rewards of capitalism. That's human nature too.
At the same time, I don't favor pure unbridled laissez-faire capitalism. There have to be some checks put in. Otherwise, pure capitalism ends up with one lucky player holding all the marbles. "The rich get richer" is a fact. "It takes money to make money" is a fact. Without checks on this, eventually some people get so far ahead nobody can compete with them.
What I really support is competition; a level playing field for everybody. The economy has to be managed to keep things in balance. We can't go all the way to the communist side or the capitalist side.

Could I ever hope to get such a deal? For 5 years of absolute butt raping this country and the world. For 3 years of killing 2455 of our kids in Iraq. For 5 years of stealing our money and re-writing our laws, running up record deficits, engorging their fat cat oil buddies with our money.......5 years of shame and misery.....for a 2 year time out? Are you kidding?
I would gladly make a deal with anyone on this blog...if you'll let me have 5 years of sleeping with your wife, spending all your money, eating your food, wearing your clothes, trashing your home....give me that and when the 5 years are up, you'll never ever see me again and I'll leave a lovely gift basket as a parting gift!
Republicans should go the way of the Whigs.

I think that the Bush-Cheney team has done such a bang up job that the 2 years the one Republican mentioned is wishful thinking. People today still curse Nixon, and his antics keep the Republicans out of power for a long time. I suspect that we will see the same this time. I long ago decided the best government is where one party has the Executive Branch and the other party has the legislative branch and we have stalemate. Less chance of them really screwing us over then.

I think the marriage issue needs to be settled at the national level. Marriage needs to be clearly defined as the union of one man and one woman. The concept of civil unions also needs to be defined as well to accomodate those in other situations.
For research purposes it would be helpful to have a registry of gays and lesbians. Marketing companies like Acxiom would love to be able to more accurately track gays and lesbians spending patterns for developing predictive models. Insurance companies would love to be able to charge differentially based on risks for future disease due to more risky sexual practices.
Lawyers are drooling at the opportunities to be involved in the dissolution of civil unions. Just think of the reality television opportunities too.
The Arkansas Times would need to add a special section for civil union announcements.

The only possible saving grace for the Republicans is to lose big. They will never change unless they have to. Republican leadership has created a party that practices much the same as the Democrats. In fact, to quote a politico from the past---"there is not a dime's worth of differnce between them".

Hey Georgie, what are you wearing about now, honey?

A national register for gays and lesbians??? Should we make them wear yellow stars, too? Hey, why don't we go one step further, and have them all move to special places where they can all live and "work" together.
Geez, and some people don't think the neocons are the nazi party of today.

George was a born follower and bet he can still do a mean goose-step. There is no reason on earth to define marriage....we're doing just fine right now. I don't care of a man marries his dog as long as he doesn't beat it in the front yard where my kids can see.
I say use your own brains and guts and forget what mere government has to say about your particular situation. License, I don't need no stinkin license!

Don't be ridiculous. I know its difficult for liberals to understand complex and even some relatively simple issues, so I'll explain the details. I'm referring to the marriage or civil union licensing process. When you marry, there is a legal record which is filed at the county courthouse. The record is also printed in the newspaper typically. So just as there are public records of straight people getting their marriage licenses, there would also be public records of those in alternative lifestyles getting their civil unions. resumably newspapers would also have to decide whether to publish engagement pictures and wedding/civil union announcements for gays and lesbians.
Public records such as marriage license records are publicly available. Commercial interests can and do use these records. When San Francisco ignored state law and offered marriage licenses to gays, companies did in fact purchase directories of those who married.
Yes anonymous liberal, there are researchers who would pay money for a directory of gays and lesbians. It is very difficult to track and survey gays and lesbians for research. Because the data would be quite valuable for research and marketing purposes, I suspect there would be an incentive for companies to try to compile such directories.
Wanting public recognition of your relationships does lead to some unintended consequences.
