'Jesus is not a Republican'

Randall Balmer, an evangelical and professor of religious history, has written a new book, excerpted in the Chronicle of Higher Education under the title above. On a day when professed "values" candidates are trampling each other to be the first to marginalize Arkansas people on account of their sexual orientation, these words from "Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts the Faith and Threatens America: An Evangelical's Lament" offer an antidote. A small slice:

By the late 1970s, the leaders of the religious right felt their hegemony over American society slipping away. One reading of the religious right is that many evangelicals believed that their faith could no longer compete in the new, expanded religious marketplace. No wonder the religious right wants to renege on the First Amendment. No wonder the religious right seeks to encode its version of morality into civil and criminal law. No wonder the religious right wants to emblazon its religious creeds and symbols on public property. Faced now with a newly expanded religious marketplace, it wants to change the rules of engagement so that evangelicals can enjoy a competitive advantage. Rather than gear up for new competition, as Beecher did in the 19th century, the religious right seeks to use the machinations of government and public policy to impose its vision of a theocratic order

...

The Bible I read tells of freedom for captives and deliverance from oppression. It teaches that those who refuse to act with justice or who neglect the plight of those less fortunate have some explaining to do. But the Bible is also about good news. It promises redemption and forgiveness, a chance to start anew and, with divine help, to get it right. My evangelical theology assures me that no one, not even Karl Rove or James Dobson, lies beyond the reach of redemption, and that even a people led astray can find their way home.

That sounds like good news to me. Very good news indeed.

How douche. Jesus wasn't partisan. Neither is faith.

Black churches go Dem. White churches go Republican.

Anon 3:32,
not so fast. i am white, i go to church and i vote democrat. and i feel confident that most of my congregation votes democrat.

Most Republicans or conservatives are about as un-Christian as they come. Hatred, fear, greed, pride, and the list goes on and on, are all anti-Christian values.

Today, Bold, it's my pleasure to agree with everything you say!

Oh, and anyone that supports the killing of human beings through war is also not a Christian. The Christian faith teaches that killing is never an option, not even for self-defense. If you can't follow His teachings, then don't call yourself Christians.

I don't think Jesus would be too happy with either party....

Jesus would not be a Republican nor a Democrat. I think the Democrats follow many more of His teachings than do the Republicans though. Neither party is perfect that is for sure.

To quote the Man Himself, "My kingdom is not of this world..." Anyone who attempts to appropriate Jesus with either American political party has missed the entire point of the Gospels. However, modern day Republicans have a great deal in common with the Pharisees and Sadducees in Jesus' day. I believe his description of them was "hypocrites and whited sepulchres."

It is unfair and inaccurate to brand ALL Christians with the rightwing, hot button issue clan of the religious right. You will find thousands of devoted Christians who do not spew hatred, bigotry, and intolerance but sincerely strive to follow the teachings of the Christ. Look for many of them at your nearby Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist, or Christian (Disciples of Christ) church.

"I don't have any respect for the Religious Right. There is no place in this country for practicing religion in politics. That goes for Falwell, Robertson and all the rest of these political preachers. They are a detriment to the country."

Barry Goldwater, 1993 interview

The same people who are convinced that Jesus would not be interested in our mundane political bickering are positive that He would certainly be proficient in calling the Hogs.

BARRY FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT!

Jesus was a Capricorn.
He ate organic foods, He belived in love and peace, and never wore no shoes.
Long hair, beard, and a funky bunch of friends.
Reckon if he came down they'd nail him up again.
Because everybodys gotta' have somebody to look down on, to make themselves feel better, any time they please.....

Everybody sing together now...

Neither party has a monopoly on 'righteous' behavior. This saintly posturing for the public, the sacred words designed to beguile, the manufactured images of good is all too no avail is not supported by tangible deeds and authentic actions.

The root cause of all our problems and troubles is TAXES! They have used them to force intergration down our throats and that caused the decay of America. America is going to hell in a hand basket, sick.
We have absolutely voted away our rights everytime there is a new tax voted in.
If God is voted out all our freedoms will disapear making the blood that was shed to gain it worthless. Both democrat and republican parties are an abomination,

I concur with your assessment, Anon(6:03). I don't pledge allegiance to either party; they are both corrupt to the core!!!!! We need some drastic changes in America, now. Voting, on many levels, is almost cliche, obselete; however, I am grateful for the right, until it is removed like the rest of our freedoms. True patriots do not follow some script written by dishonest politicians; they are not afraid to speak truth to power; they are not afraid to challenge the status- quo. I choose to be an independent thinker, an authentic patriot, not some clone who parrots that which is stuff down our throats.

I couldn't agree more with Anonymous(6:03). Jesus hated taxation. He said it was unfair to God's people, that they should have to fund those Roman pagans.

Matt 22:21, "Then saith He unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which Caesar deserves to have delivered unto his own bottom, verily, with the toes of thy foot, thou shalt render therefore Caesar's innards into Caesar soup."

Or maybe that's not what it says, I forget sometimes.

Neither party owns the rights to Jesus Christ. Religion is a personal matter and should be kept as such. For those of you who think the bible does not condone killing, let's not forget the Old Testament is full of it. For more recent examples there are the crusades, inquisition and the war in Iraq. We need to learn accepteance and love our neighbor, even when their views are not always in line with ours. This goes to Republicans and Democrats. Debate is healthy, demagoguery is not.

Right on, Starbuck...

Flyin' the flag of Christ is a mighty responsibility too often taken advantage of...

Sucks that the voters sometimes have trouble recognizing that instead of blindly following the blind...

I was watching "call in" time on C-SPAN this morning when a man called with a bone to pick with C-SPAN. "I've been tracking your calls the last 4 months," he said, "and 80% of the calls you take are from Jews."

"How do you know they're Jews?" asked our host.

"Because of their names and the way they talk," he said.

"But sir, none of our callers give their names."

"You can tell by how they talk," he retorted.

"Why have you bothered to track this for 4 months? Why is this important to you?"

"Because they are taking over. We've got to stop them."
----
So here we have it. High taxes led to school integration which in turn has let the Jews take over. Such perfect logic.

If they are in charge, I wish they'd do a better job of running things.

According to the historian Garry Wills, it is inappropriate for politic parties to claim Jesus as their role model. Government is about the distribution of justice and equity. Politics-at least in theory-is about arriving at consensus. Jesus was about establishing God's reign. Further, it was politics and religion that got Jesus killed. We are in for an exceedingly nasty election season. I dread it more than I can say.

Great story Spirit but you might have to explain to Anon what C-Span is.

Jesus may not be a Republican, but there's no way on earth he's even close to being a Democrat

You better read your Bible again, Anon 8:49.

All this talk about Jesus and not one person has worried about what Allah thinks about all this mess. In fact with over 4300 religions in the world today, it's a little selfish to let Jesus suck up all the oxygen in the room. When will you people learn to share?

And before you get all bent out of shape, there is as much reason to believe Allah has a finger in our pie as Big J. Buddha is probably pretty miffed to be left out as is Mahavira, Baha'ullah, Guru Granth Sahib, Zarathustra, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Sorry to take this out of such context starbuck but you are right on two points and it is so much fun to point them out. (Molly Ivans always says to have fun.)

"For those of you who think the bible does not condone killing, let's not forget the Old Testament is full of it."

The irony of that lone sentence gives me a good late night laugh! Full-of-it-blood-lust. What a great summation, two fisted!

By the by starbuck, if yu'in gonna cap the Old Testament, don't the word 'bible' deserve the same? What are you, a New Testament defamer, a socialist, a communist?

Furthermore, for clarion clarification, the right-righteous, the self-righteous Pharisees of the reich-wing always type it like this...BIBLE.

Take note or otherwise you might burn in hell with me. Gawd is picky like that, yeah he is.

(Wait til when you hear what he says about cutting hair and shrimp and scallops and blemished goats, oh my!)

We can talk about what Jesus coulda, woulda been or said, and we can try and appropriate His teachings to use them to our political advantage, but we mustn't lose sight of a very simple fact:

Jesus is dead.

"For those of you who think the bible does not condone killing, let's not forget the Old Testament is full of it."

I never said the entire "Biblee" did not condone killing. I said that we are to never kill according to the teachings of Chirst. I'm a Christian so I don't follow the parts of the Bible that Jesus contradicted. Most Jews do not even follow all of he Old Testament. If they did, they'd end up killing thier kids in the name of it.

Stacy should go back and read her Bible:

Matthew 22: 20-22
Then he said to them, 'Whose head is this, and whose title?' They answered, 'The emperor's.' Then he said to them, 'Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's.' When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

Not that I'm that crazy about paying taxes, but if you're going to quote the Bible, at least get it right.

The fact is, neither party, not even an individual has a direct line to the Almighty (although some think they do). But if the Religious Right put as much money and effort into missions that supplied the basic needs of food, shelter, and medicine as they do in political contributions, the world would be a much better place.

Keep your politics out of my church and your church out of my politics.

DBI, We are talking about J.C. because he was the one mentioned in the title of this thread. Although, Christians should be reminded that although they do have the US majority that does not make anyone else's point of view less relevant. Might does not equal right. Thanks for pointing this out.

I wish I had the quote, but I've never forgotten Chuck Colson's description of his days in the Nixon White House. Nixon often paraded Billy Graham and other high-profile preachers through his office. When they were gone, he would laugh at them and how easily they were to use. Colson said something about politicians looking at religion as "useful."

It is true that Jesus took no political positions and joined no political party. However, it was politicians who crucified him, and GOD HIMSELF who reversed the verdict of the lower court when He raised Him from the dead.

The teachings of the bible are not intended to benefit political parties. They are intended to guide those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. And anyone who claims to follow those teachings without fault will lie about other things as well.
