Better to give AND receive -- UPDATE

Lord's Ranch is a residential school for troubled youths in Warm Springs. The website of a preacher who works there says church attendance and similar religious sessions are "encouraged."

Surely church worship is not required, because the Lord's Ranch operates on millions in public tax money -- $8.5 million this year alone from the Arkansas Medicaid program. Courts have ruled that publicly financed programs cannot use public money to conduct religious exercises.

The man who runs the Lord's Ranch, Ted Suhl, has become a major political player, perhaps because the state looked dimly on his operation at times before the Huckabee administration came along. Now  "faith-based" organizations are riding high (and so is Huck, in Suhl's twin-engine Cessna jet). Suhl gives contributions freely to politicians in his name, the name of the Lord's Ranch and the name of at least four real estate development companies, one based in Florida.

We've totted up at least $100,000 in donations by Suhl and connections since 2000. That includes $5,000 to Gov. Huckabee (not counting his free jet rides). It includes $26,000 to the Republican Party of Arkansas. It includes $6,500 to the amendment to ban gay marriage.

But here's the most interesting thing, and it may explain why some legislators say they run into a stone wall every time they try to demand accountability from the Lord's Ranch.

The Lord's Ranch is getting $8.5 million in public money from Arkansas this year. This year's spending was budgeted at the legislative session of 2005. That meant elections of 2004 were important to those expecting to have a hand out in 2005.

In that year, Suhl entities gave at least $37,500, split equally between Ds and Rs, to legislative candidates. More individual gifts went to Democrats, but Republicans got bigger amounts on average.

We shall see how tough legislators are on the ranch at the hearing next Wednesday.

One note: The Republicans, big pals of Suhl as you can see, have beem talking about how liberal the Democratic ticket is. If anybody would know a trustworthy conservative, you'd think Bro. Suhl would. He's given money this year to Mike Beebe and Dustin McDaniel (and a heap to loser Tim Wooldridge over the years.)

UPDATE: Go to the jump for a list of all partisan contributions in 2004 and 2006 (Suhl made a couple of contributions to Wendell Griffen, a nonpartisan judicial candidate). Most won, not surprising since most contributions came after the elections. Where contributions appear in excess of the $1,000 limit it's because a candidate got multiple contributions from different Suhl entities and/or they had primary and runoff elections.

"It includes $6,500 to the amendment to ban gay marriage."

How do you give money to an amendment? This is not a facetious question. To the campaign to pass the amendment? Explain, please.

ARK. BLOG Our typing error. Contribution was to the Amendment 3 Committee that pushed the adoption of the amendment.

I'll just wager that Ted Suhl considers himself a Baptist, contradicting all the virtues that once made Baptists a proud refelction of separation of Church and State. No longer, since Criswell, Falwell, Robertson and Reed have gotten control of the Southern Baptist steering wheel. Too bad what the Southern Baptists have allowed themselves to be.

A parent would have to be negligent to sind a child to a place calling itself "Lord's Ranch." The name just reeks of authoritarianism, fundamentalism, and implied sexual exploitation.

I'd be interested in hearing the specifics of the "encouragement" used to get the residents to attend church.

This is the organization that has been cited in the past for harshly 'restraining' children. WTF??

Where are the authorities investigating these creepy cults?

That is sickening and despicable that these legislators took money from this cult organization that mistreats kids.

Beebe's office investigates medicaid fraud - but he hasn't lifted a finger. Now we know why.

CORRUPTION is spelled BEEBE

How did Barbara Horn accept contributions in back-to-back election cycles? Senators serve four year terms and a candidate may not accept or solicit a contribution except in the cycle in which they are a candidate.

Jerry Taylor, Barbara Horn, Ray Kidd, Denny Altes, Bill Pritchard, Daryl Pace, Arnell Willsi, and Bverly Pyle. What a sorry lot and rented so cheaply.

All of these legislators should give back those contributions or better yet donate it to charity.

As much as I'd like to spend this time taking about what crooks Governor Huckabee and Ted Suhl are, I can think of no better example of why we should bite the bullet and cut out private contributions to political candidates.

I hate for my tax money to fund elections, but the Lord's Ranch guy shows exactly what's wrong with our current system and why we'd all be better off if a system was set up to provide a set amount of public funding for each political race.

Letting the rich pick those who will rule over us is a terrible idea. Wonder why there are so many tax loopholes for the rich and not for you......look at Ted Suhl. Wonder how we get such morons in public office, look at Ted Suhl. Wonder why we get so many crooks in public office....look at Ted Suhl. Wonder how those elected are so willing to participate in a cash orgy circle jerk....look at Ted Suhl.

Giving some jerk my tax money to run for office offends me. But people like Ted Suhl offend me more. If, instead of letting people like Ted Suhl gift one candidate to the point that he or she can buy the election, what if each candidate for Lt. Gov., let say, got the same public money to campaign with, in the end we'd have a better chance of electing someone because of their intelligence, views, and message than electing them because they covered the air waves with commercials and buried their poorer rivals.

It's a hard pill to swallow, but just look at this Huckabee-Suhl mess and then multiply it by every candidate that will run in every election in each of the 50 states this November. No wonder we're swimming with sharks. No wonder our government is crooked. No wonder our taxes go up as greedy politicians steal, kicking money up and down the ladder to hide their sins.

It has to stop now or we're doomed. We have to change the system or we're doomed. We have to get rid of the crooks or we're doomed. Look around.....see what a mess we're in from here to Iraq....doom is just around the next corner. Work fast!

But I guess it's OK to get it from companies who made money through online gambling and internet pornography....providing theyr'e YOUR pick, right DBI?!

If you were able to understand what you read, you'd see I said NO COMPANY contributions to political candidates.

And your crap about porn and gambling should have ended with the primary. No one bought that crap then and they won't buy it in November. Halter had as much to do with internet porn and gambling as you or I.

Just a smokescreen to cover up how crooked your side plays.

You can add Eddie Cooper to those gifted in 2004, but Burklyn thought he was worth only $250.

Huckabee and the Family Life group (remember the Valentine's Day Mass Renewal of Wedding Vows) are big buddies. All employees there are REQUIRED to attend prayer meetings and pray daily....sometimes full days of prayer. Huckabee partnered with them on that venture as well as past Governor's Conference on the Family. They've got strict "rules" for employees (although lots of the staff "stray".). At least they don't own an airplane! Betcha Gov and Janet get invited to join the speaker stable once he's out of office...he's been on their radio program selling his books. Used to be you could easily identify the snake oil merchants...now, they're non-denominational ministries!

I'd like to see a feature story in the AT that ranks and details members of the General Assembly by how much PAC and corporate money they take and from whom, who is giving them the maximum, and with added attention to those who have their hands out after filing deadline when unopposed or take money after the election is over.

Expose them all--Dems and Repubs--and let the voters decide whether they're whores.

Dustin McDaniel tops the Lord's Ranch political contributions list with 6K, the Republican Party gets 5K in the current reporting period. Has to be a Bruce Burrow connection some where in the wood work.

Anyone that says terrible things about The Lord's Ranch is dead wrong. Come and see for yourself. It is a wonderful place!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARK. BLOG We'd love to. So far, they won't take our calls.

lords ranch at first might of had good things in store but what is the root of all evi??? you got it $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. When they came to warm springs my parents visited with bud and actually gave donations to the lords ranch. dad started checking the internet on bud and no more visits or $$$$$. One of the cooks went to work for me and she stated the place is evil. the cooks are required to cook him a meal of whateve he requests, lay everything out for him, like a king so to speak. the only place allowed for them to be is the kitchen and eating area. Get this......they are allowed in the dining area while bud is eating. they must leave even before he comes in the room. no contact allowed with the man????????? sad is it not?

should of stated they are not allowed in the dining room while bud is eating or allowed in any room he is in. no contact allowed why would that be. also heard he is bad health but has a son taking care of businesses, call maples at the pocahontas airport he is the pilot for the lords ranch, the pilot with huck

Where did Suhl come from?

Know if he was ever in prison?

Apparently the elder Suhl actually worked with the federal prison system before providing a home for people being released from prison with no place to go. Then he and his wife started a kids home which has developed into this facility. Sounds like the man has a lot of experience. Might be a good idea to hear his story before judging. Someone mentioned a website. What's the address?

People who know nothing about a subject are usually the ones who holler the loudest. The Lords Ranch is a wonderful, loving place and it has helped alot of kids. All this show's everyone is that you lack knowledge of a place so you just make things up! Really sad!!! Maybe you need a life.

I haven't heard anyone talk about the Food Bank abuse , missing profit sharing employee accounts or the secrectary that embezzled hundreds of thousands of dallars. Which they didn't press charges because she had them by the balls. And just think the governor of Arkansas hangs with these people.

that s funny, cause i was just telling my mom about the food bank thing the other day. i m an ex-resident of the ranch, and whoever made the kind, loving, whatever b.s. comment is either on payroll, nuts, wasn t a resident, or just plain has no clue what they re talking about. if anyone has any questions, email me at ek2012@aol.com. that place is horrible, and traumatic, and i still have nightmares and issues because of that place.

oh. and there is no "encouragement". you are forced to attend church & chapel.

I went to the lords ranch from 1988 to 1990 and had an awesome time what has happened!
