Viva Memphis

Don't know about you. But I gotta admit the Japanese prime minister's visit to Graceland -- pilgrimage is more like it -- was a hoot. And probably good for his host, G.W. Bush.

Bush didn't seem to get in to it at all. He just looked uncomfortable, as if he might look silly if he hammed it up with the Prime Minister. I guess Jon Stewart has made fun of him till he's gun shy.
My main thought is that the Prime Minister picked an awfully hot time to visit.
Also, I'd heard that Priscilla and Lisa Marie don't speak and haven't seen each other in years. It was nice to see them there together.

I was about to turn off the puter when I caught this thread.
I was never a huge Elvis fan when he was alive, but I was proud that a poor boy from Mississippi overcame the odds and became the "King."
I had always heard that Graceland was tacky.....but, much to my surprise, I enjoyed my visit there last summer very much. For those of you who have never seen it, it really is worth the trip.
It's very 70's of course, but in its' day I am sure it was very posh.
After Elvis's death, Priscilla returned the living room furnishings that had been in place when she lived there, but the house reamins largely as it was when Elvis died.
Modest by today's standards, the house must have felt like a mansion to a little boy who grew up very poor. You can almost picture him out the huge bac yard, riding four-wheelers and feeding the horses.
It's pretty cool.

No. Graceland is a series of gift shops surrounded by sprawl, ghetto, and sprawling ghetto.

I recognize that look - it's the "Pet Goat" look.

Memphis TV showed that after the Graceland visit they made an unscheduled stop at the National Civil Rights Museum. So unscheduled, in fact, that Dr. Benjamin Hooks was interrupted during a dental visit to rush downtown and join them for a tour.
The Japanese Prime Minister didn't understand "been to the mountain top" but seemed reverent after the explanation and his visit to the assassination site. Bush looked uncomfortable, perhaps fearing some in Memphis might have feelings for him similar to Ray's feelings for King.
The visit ended with what was, apparently, a real pig-out at the Rendezvous.

Anon, 9:59,
Must you be negative about everything?
Graceland is in the ghetto? I guess I didn't notice.

#1 - Bush doesn't give a crap what Jon Jewart says
#2 - This is fun. I'm glad he gets to visit Graceland

"Bush doesn't give a crap what Jon Jewart says"
Anon you scumbag, fucking bigot!! Of course the shrub does not care what stellar Stewart says. That national disgrace of a man does not know how to care, neither do you, that's why you are a shrubbie, a few too many twigs short of a full bush.

Mmmrreo-o-o-w! Go get'm Gaylord!
Koizumi is impersonating the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Dubya is impersonating the President of the U.S.
I'd say they are equally talented in their respective roles.

Thanks.

I think it is important to note that while the Japanese PM makes a visit to schlocky Graceland, the biggest and most important show in Las Vegas' hisotry opens based on Beatles' music. Their music is alive while Elvis is reduced to being a trailer park trash joke. Elvis was a hack compared to the real Kings. In fact, if Elvis was the King, the Beatles are the Gods. T

I liked the Beatles, too, but I must disagree with Bubba that Elvis has been reduced to a trailer park trash joke. His estate earned $45. million last year. John Lennon's earned $22. million. Both very gifted musicians.

I loved Graceland. Not a big Elvis fan, but the 70s decor was cool. About time we had documentation that once upon a time, children, not only did we have only three TV networks, but we had to actually get up and walk over there to change the channels!
