Elders, Franken support Planned Parenthood

Former surgeon general Joycelyn Elders and comedian Al Franken spoke last night at a gala event to benefit Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. They drew a capacity crowd at the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center, and the evening raised about $40,000 for the organization.

Elders focused on her longstanding message of talking openly and factually about sexuality. Franken made a more wide-ranging critique of the Bush administration.

Anybody out there who attended and wants to share his or her thoughts about the night?

Comments

No, but I wish I'd known about this. I would have been there.

Kudos to Dr. Elders and to Franken!!

I was lucky enough to get tickets to last night' Planned Parenthood event with Al Franken. What a great event. If there is anyone out there I agree with about 99.9% of the time, it is Franken. I read his book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them," and he was just as funny as he is when he writes. He was especially funny making jokes about Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, some of my most least favorite TV personalities out there. I was surprised by his more touching stories about how his sense of values came from his father. I wish I had caught him for his radio broadcast he did here in town as well - I'll buy his next book for sure.

As I recall, Dr. Elders had major problems in raising her children.

I would rather get advice from a more successful parent. Lord knows there are plenty of failures out there who freely express their worthless opinions.

No one's perfect- But getting advice from Ms. Elders on parenting is like getting advice from Bush on mastering public relations.

does anybody know how to get a hold of dr. elders? my civic group is holding a meeting for 4or5 hundred people and am looking for someone like her to speak! thanks in advance for your help.

Some people just don't have much to do. Do they?

"Some people just don't have much to do. Do they?"

Let's see. The crowd was so large that people were turned away. They were attending because they support PP and their ideals. The current administration has repeatedly acted to hurt people unless they are their rich friends.

And just what the heck is your problem/

I've been a fan of Joycelyn Elders for years and I'm sorry I couldn't attend. I've seen Franken once before, live, and he's outstanding. I hope he follows thru with his plan to return to his home state and run for the Senate. We need him in Congress.

I'm proud that Joycelyn Elders is from Arkansas and in this day when everyone is afraid to speak the truth, it's refreshing to remember when she didn't cut and run from the hard questions that no one is ever comfortable discussing.

It's just too bad America wasn't ready for her straight talk then and lord knows it's moved farther away at the present time. One day she'll get the credit she deserves.

hey FED UP..no problems here...just so happy to be upsetting socialists like you little feller. Dang..it's fun. And thanx..you are a credit to your race.

"No, but I wish I'd known about this. I would have been there."

do you live under a rock? Do you even read the Times, online or the print edition?

....and she likes Eric Clapner....

What a woman...listens to Cream while telling kids to choke the chicken!

Elders, what a moonbat. She got fired by clinton for proposing that we teach masterbation is school.

Ms. Elders didn't propose teaching kids "how" to masterbate (i think that comes naturally). She proposed we assure teenagers it's OK to masterbate as an alternative to having risky adolescent sex. I find that a much more pragmatic approach than telling your kid "you'll go blind."

First, Mr. Anderson, you should learn how to spell it, then do it, as opposed to procreating. It's m-a-s-t-u-r-b-a-t-i-o-n. Furthermore, we capitalize surnames (e.g., 'Clinton').

Well, if she wanted kids to "master" their technique, the spelling looks appropriate.

Franken and Elders made remarks that are fitting for the anonymous loonies on this blog. No Child Left Behind, said Franken, forbids the evaluation of abstinence only programs. Another triumph of faith over science and knowledge which is so replete in the Bush administration.
Elders had commented, in such an incisive way, "abstinence vows fail at a far greater rate than latex condoms do!"
But again, like the mental morons commenting above, the facts, science, pursuit of knowledge and other aspects of a reasoning mind do not matter. It's what little perversity they believe that counts.
Oh, by the way, both abortions and teen pregnancy went down in the Clinton years. Both have risen dramatically during the Bush years. But don't let those facts confuse your wee little minds.

Janus,

As usual, your "facts" don't seem to be accurate according to a recent report from the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools.
So what was the source of your data?

February 7, 2005 - Statistics Show Teen Pregnancy, Birth, Abortion Rates Decline

"A review of pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates for teenagers aged 15 to 17 years in the United States shows that since 1990, pregnancy rates have declined substantially for the age group, reaching a new low of 53.5 pregnancies per 1,000 females in 2000, a decline of one-third from the 1990 rate of 80.3 pregnancies per 1,000. At the same time, the birth rate for 15- to 17-years-olds declined from its peak of 38.6 births per 1,000 females in 1991 to 22.4 births per 1,000 females in 2003. The induced abortion rate peaked in 1983 at 30.7 abortions per 1,000 females ages 15 to 17, and decreased by more than half-to 14.5 abortions per 1,000 females-by 2000. The figures were reported by the National Center for Health Statistics in the February 4, 2005, issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "]

Dear George:
1. Health in Schools is not health everywhere. Lots of kids are not in school, especially in school districts that kick pregnant girls out.
2. The pregnancy rates you provide cover the Clinton years 1990-2000. Find out what has happened under Georgie Boy.
3. Similarly the induced abortion rate declined, as the figures you quoted indicated, during the 90's - the Clinton years.
4. This is a typical pattern of the Bush Administration that does not acknowledge global warming, stem cell research possibilities, Plan B, and a whole host of things that do not agree with its faith based view of the world.
They cook the books every bit as much as Enron did. Some day the 30% of the society you seem to be a member of will realize you have been played for a fool. Sorry, but somebody needs to tell you how the cow ate the cabbage.

Ms Elders was answering questions after a speech and someone asked her about kids and masturbation. She said it might be a better idea if parents talked to their own kids about masturbation rather than the kids learn about it in an alley. Those are the facts that got her fired.

How would anyone answer that question? What else would the Surgeon General of the US say....hush up...let them figure it out themselves? It was a bad question and she gave a good, but hard as hell to fulfill answer .

Weren't no alleys in our trailer park, but when I was 6, a 9 year old told me all about masturbation. But my expert had it all wrong and for several years I did it like trying to start a fire with 2 sticks.....very painful and did not give the desired results. Thank Allah I finally got it right!

So, while I never could muster the courage to speak to my own kids about masturbation, I certainly understand that learning it on the streets is perhaps the wrong way. But....now we have the Internet and MTV, no kid will ever be a dumb about masturbation as I was. And that is a very uncomfortable good thing.

Oh, and one thing for sure, if everyone was masturbating right this minute there would be no wars going on. I'll be back in about 10 minutes..........

Um, no, what got her fired was actually advocating teaching it in school.;

On December 1, 1994, at a United Nations-sponsored conference on AIDS, Elders opened the floor for discussion after she had given a speech. A member of the Society of Social Issues asked: What are your views on preventing AIDS through "more explicit discussion...of masturbation?" Dr. Elders expressed the opinion that masturbation "is a part of human sexuality, and it's a part of something that perhaps should be taught." As such, it should be a part of a "comprehensive" sex education program at a school-age level"

Those are the facts that got her fired.

deathbyinches is such a voluminous poster, I guess noone has the energy or time to check out his multitude of "facts".

Until now.

Must. Control. Fist. Of. Stark!

"The only unnatural sexual act is that which you cannot perform."
Alfred Kinsey

I'll try to repeat one of Franken's jokes,

Did you know if you take the New Testament and take scissors and cut out every passage in which Jesus mentions the poor, compassion, or our responsibility to ease suffering - what you would be left with is a perfect hiding space for all of Ruch Limbaugh's drugs.

Thus proving that Franken's jokes aren't particularly funny any more.

I thought it was funny, and multi-layered.
