Halter cleared
Bill Halter's campaign for lt. gov. announced that the state Ethics Commission had dismissed a slew of complaints over Halter's campaign finance reporting. The campaign's release:
Today the Arkansas Ethics Commission unanimously dismissed all 13 ethics complaints (and 154 allegations) made by former Democratoc primary opponent Mike Hathorn against Bill Halter shortly before the May primary election. The vote for dismissal of all complaints was 4-0 with Commissioner Herschel Cleveland recusing himself from the discussions and votes.
Bill Halter said, “I am very pleased that the Ethics Commission has unanimously ruled in our favor and am happy to move forward and to continue to talk about the things that matter to Arkansans, such as making our schools excellent and building and attracting the better-paying jobs of the 21st Century. It was unfortunate that these completely unfounded allegations diverted any attention in the earlier primary race.”
Halter also stated, “Finally, I would like to thank the Ethics Commission for its thorough and professional investigation and deliberation on this matter especially in the context of a competitive election.”

well obviously this is good news for arkansas. another white male so conservative democrat he makes Lincoln look like a bra burner has been set out to promote a personal agenda and stay as undefined on every issue for as long as humanly possible.

Consider the alternative: Jesus Fish Jim is absolutely defined on every issue, and usually he's so far right as to make Huckabee look like a pot-smokin' gay-marryin' hippie NARAL member.

I don't know what Bill Halter stands for either. That vague "better schools, better jobs" yada-yada and two bits won't even get you a cup of coffee. But, he's the alternative to the Looney Tunes' star player, Jim Holt, so...Go, Bill!!!

Um, Tim Wooldridge was the crazed right-wing opponent, not Halter.
"it doesn't matter" doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.
Halter's pretty liberal.

SAINT-TROPEZ, France - Director Gerard Oury, a cultural icon of France whose decades-old comedies remain hits today, has died, local officials at his Riviera home said Thursday. He was 87. Oury, whose top hits include the 1973 movie "Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob" (The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob), died at his home in Saint-Tropez on Wednesday night, the Var municipality said.Oury, who began as an actor, directed a series of hit films that keep the French laughing today. Besides "Rabbi Jacob," he is best known for the 1966 movie "La Grande Vadrouille," (Don't Look Now - We're Being Shot At).Oury once said that his movies "dealt with serious things by making people laugh.""La Grande Vadrouille," for instance, tells the story of the antics of two French civilians trying to help an Allied bomber crew shot down over Paris during World War II."In my opinion," Oury said, "it is more useful to make people laugh than to make a movie that preaches, is abstract."The son of a violinist, Oury began as an actor before moving behind the camera. He directed France's greats, from comedians Louis de Funes and Bourvil to
Bottom of Form. Jean-Paul Belmondo and Yves Montand.
President Jacques Chirac, in a statement, called Oury's movies "an integral part of our culture and our imagination."
This is very sad news for me personally. Everybody knows that Drew Pritt is a fan of French things. I love their food, their country, their courage and their ticklers. I knew Gerard personally and this is a huge loss. Everyone knows that I am a cancer survivor and I have no doubt that if had cancer he would have survived. It is with a heavy heart that I ask all to join me at my campaign party to kick off my 37 attempt to run for office and begin my pursuit to be the mayor of Little Rock.

Who cares? Halter will probably win, but he's a nobody in Democratic politics. The only people who don't know that are his paid staffers that work this blog over.
Halter will drag the rest of the party down this November. Hopefully we can win in spite of him. If it makes the rest of you feel any better, Lite Guv is the end of the line for Bill Halter. That's good, seeing as the man hates Arkansas almost as much as his horse-looking wife does.

Good bye Mike Hathorn--you ran a dirty campaign and you should be ashamed. I hope you are finished. If not, you will be a three time loser since like Asa Hutchinson is going to be.
I agree that Jim Holt could be our next Lt.Gov. He is the only Republican who has a chance
statewide in November.

Of all the people at Win Rockefeller's memorial service Wednesday at the Capitol simply attending for political purposes, Bill Halter was the most obvious. The interesting part -- he brought Ron Oliver with him. The pissed-off look on Jason Willett's face as they passed by was priceless. Hate to say it, but there's problems in the "family."
Posted by: I Saw It All | July 20, 2006 09:38 PM
Willett has never forgiven Oliver for blowing the whistle on Willett's spending binge and lavish, party-paid lifestyle.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 20, 2006 10:09 PM
I believe Bill Halter would make a reasonably good successor to Win Rockefeller. I am more impressed with his message of improving schools and recruiting new industry to the state, than the demagoguery of Jim Holt.
Win Rockefeller flew around the world as an ambassador for the state - mostly at his own expense (which to a large extent balances out the travel expenses of the governor and future Vice President). I would hope that whoever is elected would be a good ambassador for the state.
Who will be better at convincing Toyota, Ford, GM, etc. to build plants in Arkansas? Economic development is the key to improving the status of this state. Government programs aren't going to help the poor Delta region. It will take industrial development.

"Willett has never forgiven Oliver for blowing the whistle on Willett's spending binge and lavish, party-paid lifestyle."
Here is the delicious irony of that whole deal. Willett has been branded forever as the drunk buffoon of the Democratic Party who spends Party money at Hooters and other bars and watering holes. Willett's reputation has been shredded by his doing. He brought it on himself. Delicious, with a spoon....
Oliver, on the other hand, looks like a political genius when stacked up against Willett. More than a few have expressed sincere regret for ever voting for or supporting WIllett.
Delicious, with a spoon....

The pissed-off look on Jason Willett's face as they passed by was priceless...
Willett is just still pissed off about Tim Wooldridge getting his dirty campaigning Northeast Arkansas ass handed to him in the runoff by Halter.
Willett's old boss Marion Berry campaigned hard for Wooldridge and combined with Dustin McDaniel's razor-thin margin over Suskie showed that the Berry "machine" is out of gas.
Every time Willett opens his mouth, Mike Beebe's sphincter tightens, wondering what asinine statement Hooter Boy is going to make next.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend come inside, come inside. ELP.
Bill Halter has loaned his campaign $900,000.00 to date, the rest of his money is like 90 percent plus percent from out of state, what do we know about Halter except what we all have see on the tube? well, he's a Rhodes scholar, which makes him an intelligent guy, no doubt. So intelligent he dropped out of the Governors race knowing he'd take a whoopin' by Beebe. Fact is Halter has few friends within his own party. There are many against him, ask around and you'll find a good number of state reps and senators, and maybe even Beebe, that consider the man a political liability in the general election.
Economic development? Halter talks the talk, but the little man cannot walk the walk. Lottery gambling is his idea of funding education for Arkansas' kids and teacher pay raises? the numbers don't add up on that one at all. Face it folks, we live in a conservative state, a majority of Democratic voters describe themselves as such, with a few pockets of genuine liberalism sprinkled here and there. Bill Halter's stock, of which he will continue to sell a lot of to fund his race, will fall substantially as the voters learn more about a guy that comes home and spends millions of bucks for an office that presides over the state senate. In one stock sale alone he pocketed more cash than the every day Arkansan earns in twenty years and that don't sit well with Mr. and Mrs. Bubba, who represent the biggest majority of voters in Arkansas.
Jim Holt, for what ever everyone thinks or believes him to be, is a better retail grass roots campaigner than Halter will ever be, can he win, conventional wisdom would say no, this race is not going to be conventional in any way shape or form. There has never been an election in modern Arkansas history that puts two candidates against each other that are so totally definable as Mr. ultra-liberal versus Mr. ultra-conservative. Every time the media, print in particular, rants on Jim Holt they ratchet up his base, which works harder than any bunch of people I have ever seen in politics. I will make no predictions in regard to the final outcome, if Jim Holt draws Halter out consistently one on one, he has the ability to win the election. Pundits say his vote total in the U.S. Senate race was because Blanche didn't use her money to attack him, and the marriage amendment was on the ballot...how doe's the marriage amendment pass so huge without Democrats voting for it? Halter goe's negative, and it will explode in his face.
Holt, despite the opinions of many, falls in line with a bigger majority of Arkansas voters on hot button issues that move people, not Halter. This will be a true test of the can you actually buy a state wide election question, he bought the Dem primary and run-off (even Max said that), doing it in the general will prove to be a much greater battle for Halter.
Anyway, if Jim Holt happens to win, at least we all know what he stands for, many oppose his views, no one questions his commitment to them. Arkansas will not implode if Holt wins, and he won't have the ability to do all the nutty stuff people seem to think he aspires to as Lt. Governor.

Holt, despite the opinions of many, falls in line with a bigger majority of Arkansas voters on hot button issues that move people, not Halter.
It is unfortunate that you have such little regard for the Arkansas voter. Holt runs on hate and bigotry and frankly stupidity - sure he'll ratchet up the base - but when his base finds that Jesus Jim wants to dismantle our educational system, and make them responsible for thier own kids - cause you know public education is communisim - well, how is an average Arkie gonna do that? Takes 2 incomes just to cratch out a living - and THEY need public education.
Education and Gays and Mexicans are two different animals and Holt made a huge mistake stepping away from the foam at the mouth social issues when he attacked education. It's one thing to hate them there awful gays and mexican's, it's another thing to threaten public education because, it's THEIR RIGHT and THEIR KIDS - Holt screwed the pooch on this... he's dead in the water.
Can't wait to see Halter take Holts own words and kill him with them.

Mile Hathorn and Tim Wooldridge are finished in Arkansas politics. No one will remember a single positive thing they proposed. Everyone will remember their desperate and dirty political tactics. The people are pretty smart.

Hathorn showed his real colors. Glad he's a has-been.
Posted by: pippin | July 21, 2006 10:10 AM
Well, darned. George Hopkins hasn't been very successful in his political espionage efforts lately. But if things get too tight in the Guv's race, don't be surprised by an Asa! residency challenge.
Posted by: Odell Goodrum | July 21, 2006 12:45 PM
George did miscalculate a bit in his efforts on Hathorn's behalf. He's certainly in Beebe's kitchen cabinet, but I don't think George will convice Mike that Residency, Round 2 is a good idea. Mike can win without that. No need to relive CREEP.

Interesting those tactics moved Wooldridge plus eleven (+11) though he was so far behind it did not matter in the runoff.
It is an unfortunate aspect of our culture and society that negative politics do continue to work. Ten years ago everyone was screaming, we're fed up with all this negative campaiging, yet the voters have such a short attention span it seems shock value over rides voters taking the time to know anything of substance about anyone seeking public office.
Negative campaigning will remain a staple of every candidates political arsenal, and will continue to be a big factor in who wins elections.
My motto: if it's true and documented, it's not negative.

"Can't wait to see Halter take Holts own words and kill him with them."
Ticker,it's unlikely he will change tactics that much between Spring primary and Fall finals. He will keep up his fuball image, trying harder, clean-cut kid appearance... and let JesusJim throw all the dark, negative stuff around; JungleJim attempts to dredge up the old Commie threat of 50's fame-- most mature voters have seen that movie before but there's a new crop waiting to be plied with fears of Commies everywhere but will the new group of takers matter? JesusJungleJim is truly a retro candidate who I find truly comic while he proves once again that the more things change the more they remain the same.
