Is it hot in here or is it just you?
Did you notice that today's Perspective section front page in the Democrat-Gazette treated global warming as an established fact?
When even the D-G starts talking about ways to reverse global warming rather than insisting that the phenomenon is merely a "theory" G.W. Bush needs to get Rove and the anti-scientific apparat in the White House to draft him some new talking points.

I've noticed it for a couple of months in the media now.
That's because there's no denying the scorching heatwave, but knowing them and their tricks: they'll use that to force us all off oil usage and onto hydrogen cells to protect us from the global warming they said never existed for five years.
There is also Gore's movie. That's a powerful documentary and absolutely true.

How can they change their talking points when everything they've said and done since they pilfered the most powerful office in the world in a bloodless coup has been tailered to cater to big corporations and the mega-rich. They will simpy hold to the same line that there is no global warming.

Ahh, yes Mr. Butts. The Rovian machine will begin it's work to brainwash the GOP base into believing they have been on top of this "global warming thingee" the whole time. Just like 50% of those polled (Harris, I think) believe Saddam had WMD...up from 36%...

Yeah, but they published a LTTE from some moron who referenced a 2001 Science article about Mars warming up.
So, the mainstream conservatives might be taking it seriously, but their moron footsoldiers are still deniers.

It's like WMDs. They lie for so long that when they switch to the truth their moronic constituency never notices.

Within a week you can expect a Greenberg editorial pooh-poohing even the remotest possibility that thousands of scientists from all over the world know more about this subject than the handful of neo-con, fundamentalist religion extremists who call the shots for W.
No doubt, he'll attribute any temperature increases to the rash of flag-burnings that will continue unabated now that the Senate once again has seen fit to reject a constitutional amendment to ban such actions...

In the article: "In the future, though, the climate debate will be much more than an energy debate. We would need cleaner power and fuel to cut emissions, but we would also need to use less power and fuel. That would require changes to our energy-gorging routines - MORE BIKING, walking, carpooling, telecommuting and mass transit; smarter growth patterns; LESS ENERGY-INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE; more recycling; less waste. We would need an ecologically SUSTAINABLE economy, not the current cheap-oil-based one ... This is where climate consciousness really gets inconvenient. For example, a climate-conscious transportation policy might target the 2.3 billion gallons of oil that Americans waste idling in traffic every year by funding commuter rail, BIKE PATHS and other alternatives to cars."
These and other points made in this article are almost verbatim what Rod has outlined in his first two initiatives about bicycles and corporate sustainability.
This state is ripe for a long-term thinker and planner such as Rod. His ideas and solutions are cutting edge - yet highly time-sensitive and necessary. I think his campaign will pick up a lot of steam from now to november.

Ya' know, I was actually surprised when the D*G came out for the flag burning amendment.
I might've been dreaming or under the influence of adult beverages, but I thought that the last time the Repukes pulled this stunt the D*G was totally against it.
Since their archives are not for us mere mortals to search, one can't really be sure what their position was back then.

Re: R4G
A couple months ago my wife visited her sister in the Netherlands. She is still agog over the number of bicycles they use. No middle class household would dare own more than one vehicle, they would be ridiculed out of town. They only use the car for long trips, they use a bike for everything else.
Of course, she also called the Netherlands a 'pocketbook country', meaning that the whole place would fit in her purse. So, a bicycle makes perfect sense.
In this country and especially this state with so many people driving 30+ miles just to get to work every day a bike doesn't make a lot of sense. Of course to me, living 30+ miles from work doesn't make a lot of sense, either; I live 6 miles from work.
At that distance, the monthly CAT pass is about the same price as filling up my '99 Escort. Then it becomes the 1 hour bus ride .vs. the 12 minute commute, not really comparable.
But, R4G is right, we will have to change our routines in the not too distant future. I just wish CAT would make use of those commuter lots they built around town, and institute some express routes.

To 70%er: For the record, the D-G editorials and Greenberg personally in his columns have promoted the flag-burning amendment all along. Columnist Oakley has not, but she does not represent the paper.

I'll take your word for it, I certainly wouldn't want to accuse the D*G or Greenberg of good sense.

Screw the flag, I say we pass an amendment that protects the burning of the CONSTITUTION!
Bush & Co. are burning, desecrating, shitting on, re-writing, ignoring, selectively applying the constitution.
