Why should we expect these folks to change. They rushed to the theater to see his anti-semetic "Passion" and now rush to his anti-semetic abuse of a sherrif. That's what conservatism does when its cloaked in an all knowing, one right way religion. And as a local rabbi said of the tirade Mr. Gibson unleashed on the officer: "Sometimes the tongue speaks the truth of the heart." And what a cold, cruel, debased heart it is!

I wonder how Mel's treatment compares to Darren McFadden's. Do Razorback players get better treatment than Hollywood movie stars?
Just a thought.

A typical spoiled Hollywood celebrity. To many of these people have an elevated self worth. They are no better than anyone else just because they can act or sing or just plan party in some cases. If you judge him purely by his actions, he deserves the criticism. At least he had the decency to make a public apology. I'll give him that.

Christians who hate Jews forget that Jesus was a rabbi.
Posted by: Roland | July 31, 2006 11:04 AM
no no no Jesus was not a rabbi. He warned men NOT TO BE A RABBI! He was a Jew. I can't see any Christian hating a Jew.
Mel did ok. No one can say they didn't spout off at the mouth a few times. The passion was something he didn't do he just reported it in his own way, in a flim.

A sucker is Born-Again every minute!
Everybody hates somebody for dumb reasons... and what is a dumber reason than RELIGION!
Religion is assigned by default it has NOTHING to do with truth. If you are born in Kuwait, you're a muslim. If you're born in israel, you're a jew. if you're born in arkansas you're a christian. if you're born in thailand, you're a buddhist. get the picture?
And please, don't post exceptions to this rule... "Hey Dottie, I'm from Arkansas and I'm a Buddhist." I don't care. You all know what I mean.
Posted by: Dottie | July 31, 2006 11:48 AM
Dottie, I'm afraid you don't have enough information to make such statements. People born in Israel are not automatically Jews, for one thing, and none of your other generalizations holds up under the slightest scrutiny.
You can believe what you wish, but it doesn't make your belief true.

Anonymous,
Jesus was a Jew and a (respected) teacher, and therefore a Rabbi. He was always going into the temple to teach, even as young as 12 (or something like that). He warned people to not be like the pharisees and make a pubic spectacle of their worship, or like the scribes and place the letter of the law over love.
Posted by: Roland | July 31, 2006 12:21 PM
I'd bet 90% or more of people in Arkansas describe themselves as Christian. Dottie is exactly right. Your religion depends on geography, not any particular Truth. All roads lead to God.

Anonymous 10:26: What difference does it make what Janus' religion is (or isn't, for that matter)? Last time I checked, this blog did not require a declaration of faith in order to contribute.
However, based on the frequency of posts such as yours, perhaps it ought to require some sort of intelligence test...
Mark Twain once wrote that there are two types of Christians: Professing and Professional. He also wrote that the world is divided into two kinds of people: The righteous and the unrighteous--but the righteous get to do the dividing.
Although both statements no doubt were written with tongue firmly in cheek, they were all too true at the time, and even more so today, unfortunately.

I personally get no joy from Mel's recent troubles. I didn't go see his snuff movie, his father is anti-Semitic and he may be. But I thought the opinions of the Dixie Chicks, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins wasn't supposed to matter. If that is true, then Mel's opinion isn't worth a tinker's damn either.
People who suddenly get rich and famous often get a little nutty. King Gillette, after making a fortune with razor blades spent part of that fortune designing giant grids he imagined hanging over major cities for airplanes to land and take off from. Monte Ne, Arkansas was the utopian creation of Pop Coin after he got rich. So, it's not surprising that Mel Gibson has fantasies of being larger than life and smarter than the average bear.
I liked him before he went nuts, but it's no skin off my nose. Party on Mel.
Posted by: Deathbyinches | July 31, 2006 12:52 PM
Enough of Mel. Everybody hates somebody; a lot of the people on this blog hate Christians, but as long as they don't shoot up churches, the nuts can have their say.
But can we get some more news about Darren McFadden? Does this mean we won't get back to the Poulan Weedeater Bowl this year? I had already made my reservations at the Riverview Holiday Inn in Shreveport; should I cancel? You might think that ol' Houston could teach his boys that it ain't smart to kick concrete unless you're wearing shoes. (Maybe ol' Houston has learned this his own self yet).
Anybody got any fresh toe news?

They rushed to the theater to see his anti-semetic "Passion" - Posted by: Janus |
-----------
Janus, maybe you can explain how "The Passion" was anti-Semitic.
If the movie accurately reflected the events recorded in the Bible (I believe it did) - and the Bible is authoritatively God's Word - and accordingly God created the Jews - And as His creation, they did what He created them to do (which was essential for the resurrection) - and They are still His chosen people - how is the movie anti-Semitic?
Did Gibson add to or take somenthing away from the Bblical description? If not, I guess you are saying the Bible is anti-Semitic, true?
By the way, I am not excusing his actions or anything he said in this incident - just baffled at your comment.

There were no rabbis when Jesus walked the earth, there were priests. After the fall of the temple the Jewish position of priest was no more. Go to the library, educate yourself, and drink not the kool-aid.

The Bible is very anti-semetic, especially towards Jewish leaders. It was written by men and men are sinners. It is a faith book, not a fact book. It points to God, but it is not God.
Fundamentalism is dangerously close to idolatry in my view. It's just worship of a book instead of a golden calf.
A good example of why we can't worship a book is the above post on priest vs. rabbi. The choice of the word depends on the version and the translation, and the two words mean two different things. If the Bible is the inerrant literal word of God, why did He allow such varying interpretations? How are Christians allowed to hold such varying beliefs based on the same Word? Having the Jews act not from their free will but from a preordained future sounds like predestination to me, which is not part of the Jesus juice I drink.

"Dottie is exactly right. Your religion depends on geography, not any particular Truth. All roads lead to God."
That is an interesting observation Dottie. Reminds me of a conversation with my good Relgious Conservative friend about 2 weeks ago. For some odd reason - the converstation came around to aliens - ya aliens (boogy man - E.T. aliens), and his solid belief that the earth was the epicenter of the universe and there was only man in God's divine plan.
I asked, don't ya think that's a little arrogant and if God is God, couldn't you imagine if man was created after his own image, isn't it feasible, since he was experimenting...that maybe he put another speicies on another planet to see who might take his words and fare the best with them?
That makes me wonder about all these relgions in this world. I've got a sound foundation in my choosen faith, Christianity, and a historical prespective on the "other" major faiths in our world, and what I disern, is that orginally most of these faiths - religions, were based on love, caring for the less fortunate, purity, living a good life, doing unto others...etc.
Of course the argument can be made that many "religions" have morphed into achieving the spread of fear and hate, which garners wealth and power. But that's another story.
But I wonder, again, God being God, isn't it plausible that maybe God himself put these different "religions" on earth to see which one would fare better of taking care of his fellow mankind, which one more closely follows his words...or Allah's or Budaha's ..... ? Because all these roads do lead to God, it's just that some people's God's go by another name.
As an observation, there's not a relgion leading the pack on following close to the orginal teachings of any of these Diety's.
It's an interesting and thought provoking theory - and I shall continue to ponder it.

Satan is a liar and his children are liars. There are a lot of you who believes in the lies you have heard from your youth but know one thing that scoffers and liars will be in the fire for all eternity.
JESUS IS GOD AND HE WAS GOD IN THE FLESH While HE WAS ON EARTH. Without him there is no life! Christianity is not a RELIGION! It is the WAY to eternal life. It is good to preach Christ in pretense or truth because if it causes one to believe in him whether through a lie or truth he is saved. Mel is ok. I hope he quits drinking and driving.

Mel needs to take responsibility for his actions/behavior, and he should seek assistance for his problem with alcohol. I saw a segment on one of the shows about Howard Levine(TMZ) following people and fabricating various stories for his outlet(TMZ). I don't think his(Levine) being Jewish is the reason he broke the story; however, I am sure he has no sympathy for Mel. To think a respected attorney would chase tabloid stories is too much, huh? Mel and his father are not lovers of Jews----and for some reason, many people are nottoo fond of the people in position of power in America who happen to be Jewish.

C'mon, DBI, get a grip. Spidey isn't even close to the bestest. The Hulk is stronger, the Silver Surfer is smarter, and Thor has a better vocabulary. Why, even Prince Namor, the Submariner, gets more action with the ladies, and he's all wet.
Posted by: TJ | July 31, 2006 05:02 PM
Nuh uh, TJ. It says in the Marvel Comics New Testament, King Jane's version, Book of Spider, chapter 3, verses 4-11, that you shall believe in Spiderman and shall have no other super hero above him.
Any who dare doubt Spiderman shall be cursed for all their days, their children and their children's children. Dogs and yea, cats too. Go and sin no more you anti-Spideyist!

Mel Gibson, like a lot of other high profile people, just does not seem to get it. After he was busted he decided it was time for rehab to salvage his life and career. He was in deep trouble a long time before this weekend.

May I suggest some late summer reading for all bloggers - particularly those posting on this thread: Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why by Bart D. Ehrman.
I found it very interesting, especially considering Ehrman's on evangelical background.
Read it with an open mind and you never know what you may learn.

Liberal and Proud,
I have that book. It's good. Archaeology is also making some major strides in determining the facts on the ground.

A suggestion for more late summer reading:
The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love...by Bishop John Shelby Spong. (Anything by Spong is excellent.)

Mel issued a phony apology tonight and offered to meet with Jewish clergy.
Bill Donohue supports him, saying that he said stupid things because he was drunk.
It has been my experience that people let their true feelings show when they are drunk.
Yep, he's a bigot, all right.
I never liked any of his stupid movies anyway.
Bye, Mel.
