The repudiation of science
Ernie Dumas is an Arkansas treasure and in the event any of you fail to read his column every week in the Times, I want to plug it here. This week's is about Bush's heartless veto of stem cell legislation, but also about the administration's general elevation of fundamentalist religion over science.
Ideology and narrow religion, not the scientific method, determine the standard of truth. Throughout government, in scientific posts and on scientific advisory councils, real scientists have been dismissed, driven out or marginalized and replaced by religious fundamentalists. Michael Specter related it all in relentless detail in the March 13 New Yorker.
The results are most obvious in medicine. The prevailing doctrine at the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services is that medical breakthroughs should be thwarted if they prevent premarital pregnancy or eliminate disease or death from diseases that might occur as a result of premarital sex. The FDA refuses to make the emergency contraceptive Plan B (the morning-after pill) available over the counter because adolescent girls might get hold of it and have sex without suffering the consequences.
Last month, the FDA finally gave in and approved a vaccine that is 100 percent effective in protecting women against the most prevalent viruses that cause cervical cancer. But evangelical groups want to prevent its widespread use in school immunizations on the theory that if young teens get it they will not be scared of dying some day from cervical cancer and will want to have sex. Bush’s man in charge of the advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control that recommends immunization policies is Reginald Finger, who is connected to Focus on the Family, the most powerful evangelical group. The drug manufacturer is lobbying Finger and Focus on the Family to let the vaccine be used in immunization efforts.
Last week, the Union of Concerned Scientists and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility released a survey of 997 FDA staff members that concluded that science was under attack and struggling at the FDA. Seventeen percent said they had been told to exclude or alter scientific information or their conclusions in FDA documents for nonscientific reasons, and more than 40 percent said they knew of cases where political appointees injected themselves into scientific conclusions.
Having the most anti-intellectual president in history can be entertaining at times, as he demonstrated at the G-8 summit last week, but we pay for it with needless suffering.

The American Taliban holds sway over our government now, as We, The People, cemented their grip in 2004. We are no more enlightened, on the whole, than the far-flung tribes of Afghanistan. Our gadgets and toys may be more sophisticated, but our minds are most certainly not. We, The People are experiencing this "needless suffering" by our own hands.

Yeah, Bush is no doubt the damnest man ever to be president but the one thing is we are not to use unborn or almost born babies for stem cell research! If you want to have stem cells for research YOU CAN USE YOU OWN DAMN BODY FOR IT! Don't take an inocent baby to do what he hell you want with stem cells. By God this is a Christian country and if the bastards, aclu, keep on forcing their ideas on us we will have to go to war with the bastards. IN history God has killed many of their kind.

While this case involves the right of Rush Limbaugh to maintain the privacy of his medical records, the precedent set in this case will impact the security of medical records and the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship of every person in Florida, said Howard Simon, Executive Director of the ACLU of Florida."

I am by no means a Bush supporter, quite the opposite. But how does Ernie know that the reason for resisting the cervical cancer vaccine is because girls will decide on free love since they would be immune to cervical cancer.
For all the excuses I was given for girls refuse sex with me, cervical cancer was never mentioned.

Ernie does an excellent job week and week out. He's well respected among those politicos that look truly at the issues and their nuances.

There was a discussion on NPR the other day about when life began. The interviewee was the lead scientist on the Human Genome project, a scientist and a Christian, and who said that science could tell you when cells had combined but that the question of when life began was an issue of religion, not of science.
Then he added that since identical twins start as a single egg which divides
sometimes later in its development, if the soul was there at the inception than each twin would have one-half a soul at birth or the soul became present sometime later in development before birth.
The problem with science is that it has the pesky problem of having facts that sometimes get in the way of "logical" beliefs.
And, of course, there is that conspiracy about the earth not being flat. Some of us know that Columbus originally had four ships, the Nina, the Pina, the Santa Maria and the Irving. The Irving fell over the edge of the earth.
Posted by: Fed Up to Here | July 27, 2006 03:12 PM
This is to be expected. Since they see a fertilized egg as being just as much a person as they are, they want to let it grow a while before girls get an abortion, rather than taking the morning after pill to prevent it's implantation in the first place.
See, this way they get to punish the girl more for her wickedness.
It's just a matter of time until we have pregnant high school girls in the stocks on the courthouse lawn.
It's just a matter of time before they bring back the witch trials.
It's just a matter of time before they amend the constitution to make a fetus President. It will be sort of like Luxora in the Orval comic strip.

Coming from a line of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's tendencies, this issue is particularly important to me.
The hard core evagelical Taliban movement has run it's course...with overwhelming support in both Houses for stem cell research, days are limited for Pat Robertson and the like.
This administration will go down as the worst in history for many things...but meddling with science will be among the top.
It's our own fault...scratch that, YOU'RE fault, you fools that voted for "compassionate conservatism," that when tested, our kids score lower than other advanced countries in the world.
The worm is turning...

The Bush campaign to outlaw stem cell research is possibly the most hypocritical of all of Bush's rigid policies. Bush is not a champion of human life. He would be much more accurately described as a war monger, though that is obviously harsh.
The administration's approach to science within the FDA is no different than other campaigns waged to ignore scientific truth for convenience. We see the same thing in the "debate" about global warming. The scientific comunity agrees - even the few scientisists who have allegedly ruled out global warming in the past - global warming is real. (see Peter Doran's op-ed piece in the NY Times today). Only Bush and those who follow him blindly continue to believe that this is not a problem. It's no different than the fierce campaign waged by tobacco companies for decades, to convince the public that smoking is harmless. We all know how that ended.
All of these problems arise from the basic fact that we, the people, are capable of being hypnotized into believing fraudulent claims that mask underlying interests that are harmful to us. The only solution s to put on your thinking caps and stop believing the hype. It's not about science vs. religion, or science vs. morals. It's about humanity - our health and our survival as a collective group. Try as we might to convince ourselves that an eternal reward awaits and consequences therefore don't matter, we all know that consequences really do matter. It's time to take responsibility - admit that global warming is a reality and that action must be taken. Admit that smoking is harmful to your health. Admit that stem cell research is the greatest tool available to combat a future in which we will face an unprecedented chalenge of disease and health-related issues. Admit that the earth is more than 6,000 years old but may have far less than 6,000 years remaining. Admit that these problems are our own fault, and that only we can solve them.

These embryos would be thrown away (murdered according to Bush) if there were not used for stem cell research. Where's the concern about those embryos thrown out (murdered)? If Bush and some of you nuts really think it is murder then why allow any stem cell research at all? Why allow fertility practices that result in these embryos? Why aren't you volunteering your wives and daughters to give birth to the leftover embryos in order to save them from "murder?"

This was a well-known consideration in the debate on the vaccine.
From the site...
http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/341183/zealots_find_risk_of_death_preferable_to_teenage_sex/index.html?source=247
"...The vaccine, which should be available next year, prevents human papilloma virus, known as HPV. Because HPV is sexually transmitted, social conservatives object to putting the vaccine on the routine list of immunization shots that girls receive before puberty. The self-appointed family values crowd fears that recklessly protecting a girl's health in this way could encourage promiscuous behavior. Or, to put their message another way: The cervical cancer vaccine could turn your daughter into a tramp."

Is there a way to add some stem cells to Ann Coulter without harming the innocent? She has claimed Clinton's philandering, loose ways show a direct correlation to his latent homosexuality. I did not realize she had a degree in psychosexual behavior. I guess she really does have it going on, huh? Hee, hee, hee...

By the president's impeccable logic, all fertility clinics should be shut down, since they result in the discard of embryos and thus the destruction of human life--or, fertility should be regulated so that only one egg at a time is fertilized and implanted, ensuring no waste.
Try that and see how it goes over with your constituents. If it's really a moral issue for the reasons put forward, he has no other moral choice than to speak out against fertility science.
Otherwise, he should help himself to a steaming cup of STFU.

Are you serious? I don't follow what she says but that sounds like something she'd say. If there is any reason for it, it would be hypomania. Hypomanics are a bit more manic than normal and a very increased sex life is a common result. Hypomaniacs tend to be very charasmatic and successful.

I think it is important to note that Sens. Bill Frist and Orrin Hatch, both extremely conservative, are in support of stem cell research.
Hatch gave a moving, well thought out commentary for CBS's Sunday Morning last week as to why he is both pro-life and pro-stem cell research.
The gist is that the research isn't a magic bullet and it would take 10 years to work through the science. Now with the veto, it will be 12 years (the 10 years and the two years before Bush leaves office) and that the President is on the wrong side of popular opinion and, more importantly, progress.

Where's the concern about those embryos thrown out (murdered)?
If Bush and some of you nuts really think it is murder then why allow any stem cell research at all?
Why allow fertility practices that result in these embryos?
Why aren't you volunteering your wives and daughters to give birth to the leftover embryos in order to save them from "murder?"

in regards to the religious issue, there is a scary article in today's WSJ (the most conservative daily) about a TX evangelical.. one of those psychos on tv i think.
anyway denotes that the evangelical agenda (or apocalyptic vision more like it) is much entrenched in the Bush administration foreign policy in regards to middle east.
THESE RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES ARE FREAKSHOWS AND BELONG IN TENTS ON THE HIGHWAY, NOT IN THE WAR ROOM IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!
and i quote the article:
Standing on a stage bedecked with a huge Israeli flag, Mr. Hagee drew rapturous applause and shouts of "amen" as he hailed Israel for doing God's work in a "war of good versus evil."
Calls for Israel to show restraint violate 'God's foreign policy statement" towards Jews, he said, citing a verse from the Old Testament that promises to "bless those who bless you" and curse "the ones who curse you."
President Bush sent a message to the gathering praising Mr. Hagee and his supporters for spreading the hope of God's love and the universal gift of freedom."
GEORGE BUSH BELONGS IN AN INSANE ASYLUM NOT IN THE OVAL OFFICE

Good observation..but other nations have no or few "total fucking morons"
running their science-government programs. The result of this unholy marriage between Repugs and Christain Fanatic party will be that instead of finding leading cures and exporting medicenes to every nation on Earth we will be importing cures.
Isn't this the goal of Bushco and his maggot company? Indebt us to other nations so that future Americans must struggle to survive.
Why do they truly hate America so much?

"Federal funding for "facilities and administrative costs" won't necessarily bar an institution from doing any embryonic stem-cell research, provided the grant recipients are willing to jump through various accounting hoops. But nothing charged as a direct cost can be used to "subsidize" non-allowed research. As I read it, that means any kind of machinery or equipment acquired as part of a directly-funded project can't later (or simultaneously, for that matter) be used for embryonic research outside those few approved lines. That leaves a lot of labs with the choice between eschewing federal funds altogether, finding separate funding to buy a lot of redundant equipment, or focusing on research programs the feds like. Now, maybe embryonic research is sufficiently promising that there are plenty of places willing to do one of the first two. But larger labs with lots of resources, especially in the academic world, are likely to find themselves pushed toward option three.
So the problem isn't just that the ban results in less direct funding for embryonic research that can be made up easily enough elsewhere, it's that it warps the decisions of institutions by making the marginal cost of pursuing embryonic research much higher than some alternative (if less promising) project, even if both are directly funded from a private source, because the other project isn't going to require that you purchase a bunch of new equipment to avoid repurposing stuff from other projects. The distorting effect goes well beyond having to find alternative funding for specific research. So given that we're going to have some federal funding for scientific research, I think we should at least insist it not distort the ordinary developement of research any more than necessary."

You intellectuals don't need Bush and the Federal Gov. funding. Just hammer the Gates foundation for research money. I hear they have a little extra from Buffett--about $30 BILLION--surely that'll cover stem cell cures of everything. Oh I forgot. The Gates/ Buffett poster boys don't think health issues in the US, where they made their money, deserve funding. These boys should be able to spend all their dough on soup to nuts discovery, manufacturing and delivery in Africa and Lululand while the intellectual left plunders the "small" estates and regular taxpayers through the gov. to fund stem cell research and Bill Clinton clones.

Hey "Jackass",
Just a little thought. What if you are wrong and there is a God? Have you got a backup plan? I happen to belive that there is a God and that he has a plan for our lives and we will stand tall and give an account to him in the end. Now I may be wrong, and if I am then what does it matter, it will just be over.
But if I am right and you are wrong there will be Hell to pay. Just a thought.

I think God would rather have an honest unbeliever than someone who has faith only because they think it will keep them out of Hell. If that is your rationale for believing in God, you don't have faith, you have fear.

CV, you don't have a single clue what you're talking about, do you? Where do you think stem cells come from, you think they chop off the heads of newborns to harvest those little devils or what?
and if Jesus doesn't want us to use medical science and new discoveries to save lives, then why did He give us the scientists who have the skills to do these amazing things?
I wonder how long mr anon troll #-whatever would stick to his belief that Jesus doesnt want us to rely strictly on faith for curing disease if it was him or one of his family members who needed that treatment. I bet he'd get another phone call from Jesus - he had to have gotten one to tell him that he was right in the first place - to tell him to go ahead on if it was his hide needed saving.

About the HPV vaccine, I have a suggestion to the fundies on how to handle it:
LIE TO YOUR CHILDREN BY TELLING THEM IT'S FOR SOMETHING ELSE. If the vaccine is given at around 8 years old, they really won't care. They are thinking about other things and by that time will have had so many vaccines given to them that they will just shrug and go on. It will be just one more.
Or don't lie. Just say it's so you won't get sick or something.
Pretty simple, isn't it? See how easy it is.
