Tribute to Mark Pryor
Brummett gives a well-deserved round of applause to Mark Pryor for brave and important votes on critical issues, from flag burning to the estate tax, where he's working to craft a compromise worthy of passage.

Comments
What a marked contrast, pun intended, to the pandering and beguiling likes of Sen. Lincoln. Just to keep things in perspective, though, we should recognize that Sen. Pryor's accolades are due to his damage control actions. It's not as though he's a beacon of light trying to move the country forward.

Mark, reminds me so much of the superb service of his Dad - - former Senator David Pryor.

[Regarding the flag burning amendment, Pryor] said he simply had an aversion to amending our Constitution save the most compelling need, which this politically motivated solution to a nonexistent problem wasn't.
This is a beautiful sentence.
How come Brummett isn't talking nice about Sen. Lincoln? I know why I'm not.
That's because outright repeal [of the estate tax] would carve a trillion dollars over 10 years out of a federal budget already in a hole that gets $300 billion deeper every year.
This is also a beautiful sentence.
...Pryor was taking the lead in shopping a solution falling between $2 million and $10 million...He's on the right track. A $2 million estate isn't what it used to be...
I can go along with this. My focus in the estate tax is to make sure one family doesn't end up with a huge portion of the nation's wealth, removed from circulation and passed down generation to generation. I'm thinking multi-billion dollar estates, not $5 million estates.
So, I'm with Mark Pryor.
This week.

Compromising has gotten our nation in a hell of a mess. If he can't do something for us without compromising he should be fired from office. Come on people EVERY democratic power on earth since the beginning of time was brought down by people who compromised.

Wow! Sure glad you weren't in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. Franklin's generation would have put you in stocks.

What Brummett is congratulatiing Pryor for is carefully crafting his own longevity in the Senate, which is a hell of a career for a young man. Sure, he's doing great at securing HIS future. But I can't and won't ever forgive him for voting FOR the bankruptcy bill (S. 256 As Amended Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.) The bill was clearly going to pass with the Republican majority voting for it, yet both Pryor and Lincoln crossed over and voted for it. Why?
One, as a sop to the continuing myth that "family farms" would suffer; second, for the love of MBNA, MasterCard and VISA political contributions. Why not, they could reason...it's going to pass anyway, might as well get on the gravy train.
I will always remember that both of them felt more in alliance with credit card companies like JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the finance units of General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. - than they did with the people of Arkansas, whose median income is about $32,000 and whose median age is 36. Hello, lifetime of struggle.
This bill did NOT place any restriction on the credit card issuers although one might think a bargain might have been struck- say, exceptions for bankruptcies caused by catastrophic medical expenses in a state with a high rate of uninsured/underinsured workers.
No, the bill was a big win for the credit card sharks, who gave up nothing and gained a stranglehold on the American consumer. Now that bankruptcy bill is coming to fruition. Remember seeing stories that legions rushed to file before the bill went into effect? Watch what happens to those who file after it became operable.
What did Mark and Blanche do in the meantime to mitigate, to help the people of Arkansas live better. Well you tell me, MAYBE there was something. Universal health care, maybe? No. Health insurance industry regulation, any at all? Can't recall it.
So what if he voted against the flag-burning amendment. Good Democrats and and reasonable Republicans have managed to do that time after time. I don't recall (correct me if I am wrong) that any Senator was ever defeated solely over this measure. It's an overblown danger - the whole exercise is a trap set by Republicans. I should certainly hope that he'd stand up that kind of bullying action. It's the least we could ask of him and I kind of think that's all we're getting from Mark. The least he can do for us.

EVERY democratic power on earth since the beginning of time was brought down by people who compromised.
That's quite a statement.
I agree with Cato. Compromise is important and necessary if anything is going to get done. Of course there are some issues where compromise is not acceptable. But in the real world, if there is never any compromising everything grinds to a halt.

I'll always be a fan of David Pryor because of his fight to reel in an out-of-control, thuggish IRS.

regardless of other votes mark pryor voted the proper way on 3 bills in the last few weeks. gay marriage, estate tax and flag burning were important votes for a democratic senator, and probably pissed off a few ole boys, and he voted correctly on all of them. i am proud of him for that.

Boy mag, you said a mouthful. Yes, being proud of Mark Pryor because he voted against the flag burning amendment is like being proud of him for walking erect on 2 feet.
Simply taking a look at the countries who do have a flag burning amendment guarantees I don't want the US in that group. Approving a flag burning amendment starts the slide down hill to approving an amendment that makes it a crime to call George "Haditha" Bush a no account prick.
Then what? Those Americans who don't fit a set mold are systematically removed, deleted, expelled, put down for the good of our united fascist state? Brainless Dan Quayle , had he been in the Senate the other day might have had the brains to vote no on the flag burning amendment. Oh wait...what am I saying, Danny boy would have voted like his masters instructed.
Is that why Blanche voted FOR the flag burning amendment? Just who is her master? And why did the master decide to let Blanche take the hit on this vote and not Mark. If you'll watch, the next time a "neo-con in sheep's clothing vote" comes up, Mark will side with the neo-con-rightwing-nuts who seem to have some kind of magic hold on the hearts and minds of our Congress.
Something more than the smirky desires of our Chimp in Chief are afoot. A mysterious force that I'm betting is big business hiding behind the curtain has removed free will from our elected officials. Examine every vote of the last 5 years and it makes no sense. Harry Reid voted to ban flag burning...Harry Reid!
Did they have his youngest child duct taped in a closet, holding her for ransom? The night before did someone threaten to steal all of Lincoln's polyester suits? Who or what group is buying off or blackmailing our Congress? Does Wal-Mart have a gun? Is Exxon holding a sharp knife? While getting their flu shots were tiny mind control chips implanted in our elected officials?
And sure sign is all these investigations going nowhere. From the investigation of 9-11, to the investigation of Bush lies that took us to war, to the investigation of Rove, Libby, Cheney, to the investigation of the use of the Lord's Ranch jet. Nothing......nothing is happening....we get nothing and the sheep of America lose interest, forget, move on. Where is Estes Kefauver when we need him?
No, I can't praise Mark Pryor for having hair or drinking water successfully. Brummett should have used all those words to roast Lincoln for weakening the Democratic Party just a little bit more by voting for something a trash hauler with a 9th grade education would have known better than to vote for.
We on the left are smiling about the coming November election, but the recent voting record of our own Senators tell me we may not be smiling in December. Something else is afoot and it doesn't bode well for the future of this country. Be afraid, not of Mexicans or gays or burning flags, be afraid of The Big Fix....it may already be too late.

This is off topic but there is no open thread today....
What's up with the thenameiscoming ads? I clicked on them and there was nothing but a page saying thenameiscoming. How stupid is that?

Mark Pryor's votes might be admirable if he didn't immediately go off and discount them, agreeing with the opposition. HIs votes are flim-flams with so much noise from Mark that it is impossible to tell where he stands. Mark stated that he supported the repeal of the estate tax, left it on his web site, and continues to say so; but voted against it. Same with the flag ban - and then said he would favor ANOTHER congressional act banning flag burning, apparently like the one the Supreme Court already threw out. Mark, we ain't rubes, and you cannot have it both ways. That Brummett praises him is equally as damning, since it is a public acknowledgement that Mark is only protecting his own skin at the expense of his soul. Mark has lost my respect, and my vote.

Jerry Donoho, no one is going to pay attention to anything you say if you don't start capitalizing correctly.
