A heartbeat away
It took some doing, but John Brummett got Gov. Huckabee to say he supports Jim Holt for lieutenant governor.
It is more an anti-endorsement of Bill Halter. Huckabee faults Halter for, among other things, failing to say he endorses the constitutional amendment by which Arkansas banned same-sex marriage and civil unions. (Huckabee said up in New Hampshire the other day that, in more tolerant New Hampshire, he's open on civil unions, which are illegal in more Arkansas.) He also faulted Halter for being out of touch with Arkansas value on gambling for supporting a state lottery. We don't like a lottery either. But, if prevailing values are the issue: every poll ever taken shows a majority of Arkansans would support a state lottery for education, which Halter proposes. But Arkies have consistently opposed casino gambling. Huckabee opened the door to casino-style gambling in Arkansas when he quickly waved into law the bill by which Oaklawn and Southland are about to install thousands of video poker, blackjack and slot-type machines in their betting parlors.

I think we need a constitutional initiative to create the role of "court jester" in Arkansas government. This office would allow all the minorly insane, narcissitic and bored upper class (which this state produces in abundance) to have a genuine state office from which they could do absolutely nothing important other than keep us all entertained.
Then I realize that's exactly what the lt. governor already does.

I guess the neo-con media hypnosis machine is getting to me, too. Somehow I forgot all about Huckabee saying in N.H. he was open on civil unions. I wish he would elaborate. Do tell, RevBroGuv.
Not much more has been said about that airplane engine (and other) trouble he had a while back.
JB, this was a fine piece in your column today. Next time you see Mr. Huckster ask him what he thinks of civil unions.
It looks as though Mike is doing what a lot of other people are doing this time around: picking the lesser of two evils.
Brum's non-non-endorsement of Lagrone told me something I didn't know about that guy.
I'm kind of confused about what a Democrat looks like these days. But if we can keep the bad Republicans out of office this time around, I promise I will more fairly examine the Independent and Green or other party folks.
It's not right that these men have been excluded from a public debate. It is public, isn't it? If it's not, then why not?

Now wait, stop the presses. Isn't Holt the same guy that the Right/Rev/Broth/Gov said that they didn't drink the "same Jesus Juice" when it came to Holt's autocratic view of all things related to the brown skkined?
Isn't Holt the same guy that thinks that although our founding father's put in our Constitution that our state would make sure every child had a chance for an education...Education is now a socialist program?
I guess it depends upon which part of the country and which fence the Huckster wants to straddle. One day, it's ok, the next it's ok - you can only hope that the Huckster at least had to hold his nose to endorse the biggest and scarist wing nut to come along in decades.

Since John Brummett seems to be the only reporter in Arkansas who asks questions of candidates I hope he will read this post and perhaps help a voter out . . .
I noticed that Congress made 529 College savings plans permanent a few weeks ago. I have two kids and I am planning for their college. I want to benefit from the tax savings of a 529 PLAN (like rich people) but the options out there are very limited. My broker says that their just isnt enough demand for 529 plans so the costs are pretty high unless you can start a very large account.
Two candidates, Mac Campbell and Bill Halter, proposed state help for working families in starting 529 plans. I think that people like me would benefit greatly if the state would make matching grants to help working families start 529 plans. It would increase use and lower costs. Ultimately the state could save money on higher education if they would make investments in the name of individual Arkansans early in their lives and help them save from day one.
Campbell lost, but Halter is still in (although I am not sure what his plan would do). What do the Republican candidates think about the state using some of the surplus to start a college savings program for working families? What do the gubernatorial candidates think?

So John B backed old Huck in the corner and got him to admit that he's against same-sex-marriage. With Huck-a-baby being the old home grown Baptist type who still think dancing leads to sex, pregnancy, breast cancer and other sexual evils it's no big revelation.
Not that it will come up for a vote in Arkansas anytime soon but how about asking where he and his old buddy Holster Holt stand on "Polygamy"? Apparently there was a pro-rally in Utah yesterday and you know how fast satanic evils spread and we got to be prepared.
I knowwwwww! There's nothing I like more than seeing than two opposing religious types having to weasel around criticizing one another.

Even many Republicans like me can't stomach this moron Holt. The guy can't tell the truth about anything. He can't raise any money. He doesn't really campaign. He's a total fraud.
Halter is dirtbag trying to buy a political career, but what good will the Lt Gov get him, unless Asa is elected and he can run against him in '12. Otherwise, Halter will serve in a meaningless position 4 to 8 years waiting to run for Governor.
Its a risk I'm willing to take to bury Jim Holt politically. Perhaps once he's no longer a State Senator, he will find some way to get a real job to support his 7 kids, although I can think of no reason anyone would hire him.

Max - I didn't know Mike Huckabee was a cross-dresser!
Huckabee has never said he does not wear ladies' bloomers and blouses, so it must be that he actually does rouge his lips and don a early `60's beehive in the privacy of the Governor's Mansion. I am in shock. Will this hurt his chances for the presidency?

Halter just wants to have a springboard to run against Pryor in the primary 08. He does not care about Arkansas or its people. I promise you that if he lost the election he would be on the first flight back to California on November the 8th!!
Let's face it, Halter is a "California Liberal" who does not have the values of the people of Arkansas. He has never answered the question about if he favors the ban on gay marriage and he had to take a poll of the State Legislature before he could answer the question of allowing gay foster parents.
Please don't let Bill Halter bring his "California Liberal Agenda" to our state.

I would be happy if he brought the 'California Liberal Agenda' to our oh so enlightened state. Maybe we wouldn't be at the bottom ranking of almost everything except for teen pregnancy and divorce, which our sanctimonious baptists have cornered the market on.

Hey! Bill Halter came out and publicly opposed gay marriage.
That p%ssy.

I'll take a "California Liberal" anyday over a modern day "Justice Jim"

"Huckabee's e-mail response to his press secretary, which she dutifully forwarded to me, was this: "Of course I'll vote for Jim Lagrone. Will John?"
(Now that the question is in play, let me say that I just might. Lagrone is a fine fellow and Charlie's job performance is mixed - poor on the election contract but stellar on that spruced-up Capitol dome.)"
Hold up. I'm starting to be convinced.

I bought the Arkansas Democrat today, as I do every Sunday (to get the coupons and the comics) and yippee, I got to see who contibuted to the candidates.
Halter's contributions ran almost three columns.
Holt had two contributions. Not two columns, two contributions.
Guess the trolls on here haven't put their money where their mouth is.
I expected to see Trish, Billy, and Brad at the very least.
