Duck and cover

As expected, A$a! announced his endorsement by the National Rifle Association. News release on the jump.

Wildlife watch out. Mike! is going to be coming at ya, both barrels blazing.

And we promote from earlier comments this from independent candidate Rod Bryan:

Rod Bryan stood directly in front of ASA and the lecturn at Don's Weaponry today. As soon as ASA finished speaking, Rod's hand shot up and ASA had to be told to take the question or comment. With checkbook in hand, Rod offered to be the first in line to sponsor the debate in Jonesboro, of which he has been excluded. Rod Bryan wondered to whom the check should be written. ASA dodged the question, of course, and said the press conference was only about the 2nd amendment... apparently the 1st amendment is simply a bother to the republican candidate.

I wonder if the Dem-Gaz will write about this event as it happened? I'm positive that Channel 4 got it on tape.

Hutchinson news release

Asa Hutchinson, the 2006 Republican candidate for Arkansas Governor, received the formal campaign endorsement of the National Rifle Association (NRA) today in recognition of his longtime support for gun owners' rights.

Hutchinson said he was proud to have the support of the NRA, the nation's leading gun rights and sportsmen's advocacy group, in his gubernatorial bid and pointed to his long record of support for gun rights throughout his years in Congress.

Standing with Arkansas NRA members, as well as members of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission at Don’s Weaponry, Hutchinson pledged that, as Governor, he would continue working to defend the Second Amendment rights of sportsmen and gun owners in Arkansas as Governor.

"For Arkansans, the right to bear arms is one of our most cherished values, and Arkansas needs a Governor who understands and respects that," Hutchinson said in accepting the endorsement. "Growing up on a farm in rural northwest Arkansas and working in law enforcement and Congress taught me to respect the significance of Second Amendment rights when it comes to the safety and security of our citizens.”

Hutchinson, who received an “ A+” rating from the NRA based upon his support for gun rights in Congress, contrasted his own record with that of his opponent, Democratic Attorney General Mike Beebe.

"When Mike Beebe had a chance to stand up for gun owners in Arkansas by voting for the concealed carry law in 1993, he skipped the vote," Hutchinson said. "Sportsmen, Second Amendment advocates, and men and women across the state who want to ensure the security of their homes and families should know where the candidates stand and who will be a true friend to their cause. I am that candidate."

Protecting Private Property Rights

Hutchinson also pointed to the Attorney General’s weak stance on private property rights as a matter of concern to sportsmen and NRA supporters.

In fact, NRA supporters in Arkansas began a letter-writing campaign to the state Legislature last year after the Supreme Court watered down property rights in the controversial Kelo decision. That decision opened the way for local governments to seize private property such as homes, small businesses, farms and open lands and hand over to other private interests in the name of economic development.

Hutchinson immediately criticized the ruling as bad law and called upon the Arkansas Legislature to pass legislation defining “public use” in a way that will protect property rights from such abuse. Attorney General Mike Beebe responded by issuing a formal AG Opinion asserting that no such law was needed.

“Unless ‘public use’ is defined, our Constitution provides no real defense against this abuse, which opens the possibility of gun shops and shooting ranges being seized by local governments, or hunting lands being turned over to big developers,” Hutchinson said. “I believe that we absolutely must take action to protect those rights. It will be one of my first actions as Governor.”

Hutchinson Launches Sportsmen’s Coalition

In addition to announcing the endorsement by the NRA, Hutchinson also introduced the "Sportsmen for Asa" coalition -- a group composed of Hutchinson supporters dedicated to gun rights, self defense and security, conservation and sportsmen's issues -- to help reach out to other voters who share a commitment to such issues. The coalition is chaired by Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioner Sheffield Nelson. To register as a coalition member, visit Hutchinson’s campaign website at
www.asaforgovernor.org and click on "Join a Coalition."

Hutchinson also praised Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee for his support for sportsmen and the hunting and fishing community during his 10 years in office and pledged to continue that support if elected to succeed Huckabee.

The endorsement was announced today by NRA representative Anne Britton of Fayetteville at Don's Weaponry in North Little Rock.

Other Arkansas candidates endorsed by the NRA in this election cycle include Republican U.S. Rep. John Boozman and Democratic Reps. Mike Ross and Marion Berry.

Who stands to lose more from Bryan in the debate, Beebe or Asa?

The NRA endorsed a Republican! Get outta here!

The NRA endorement in combination with Asa's tough stand argainst school consolidiation will wrap up the conservative rural Democrat vote for Asa.

As DBI and the rest of you know, Beebe craved getting the NRA endorsement. Now that he lost it, expect him and his amen crowd to pretend its no big deal.

I think the war in Iraq is going very well. I'm glad we're there.

I'm looking forward to you writing about Bryan crashing Beebe events, Max.

The endorsement was announced today by NRA representative Anne Britton

Well, super crazy is behind Asa. Ms Anne ran for local constable or JP a few years ago in Fayetteville. Her campaign material featured a pic of her with crisscrossed ammo belts --holding an alley sweeper which would have made Arnold Schwarzenegger proud.
So long as she stays on her meds all is well. Just don't let your child stray into her yard.
_

Do you guys really think Asa is opposed to Jim and Rod being in the debates. He would love it, it is Beebe who refused to debate if those two were permitted.

I don't even know who Anne Brittain is. Kindly, stop using my name.

The choice is clear:

If you want to keep your Second Amendment rights, vote Asa.

If you want to let the John Kerry crowd take them away, vote Beebe.

I don't even know who Anne Brittain is. Kindly, stop using my name.

NOT

"...next they'll be wanting to marry their old Jersey cow...."

"...my kids should not be prevented from praying in school...."

"...the flag is a symbol of freedom that I fought for; anyone who disrespects it should be...."

"...don't these moonbats know we are in a post-9/11 world?"

"...I guess you'd rather we fought this thing in Benton instead of Baghdad."

"I guess he was too busy soiling that blue dress...."

"I don't believe that guy really killed JonBenet."

This "...my cold, dead hands...." moment has been brought to you by the party who doesn't see the 1500 pound gorilla in the room.

I'm quite sure that all of you with brains know that the above post re: Iraq did not come from me, but just in case you believe all that you read. It wasn't me. Perhaps the sad person who pretended to be me should use fewer words next time so as not to be exposed as a talentless hack.

re: "Do you guys really think Asa is opposed to Jim and Rod being in the debates."

Is his name signed on the contract? Did he write it? Sounds like he is equally at fault for the exclusion of other parties. Hell, there both lawyers, you would think they would know better. Verily, Verily I say unto thee...They will live to regret this sad agreement.

This is an agreement between them. It seems like whoever televises the debate can include whoever else they want.

If they don't include Bryan, they could be sued. They must at least give him equal time to respond-- which would still make the majors look silly.

Max lets see how much you scream for the 1st amendment when Rod does it to Beebe...if he has the guts...which I doubt.

DBI the NRA also endorsed Mike Ross and Marion Berry.

Response?

Rod is it true that you told everyone at Don's Weaponary that you were pro gun and you braged about your grandfather having an M-16 and a hugh gun cabinet?

Rod say it ain't so!!

I have a gun about 2 feet away from me. I keep it in case some crazy breaks into my house in the middle of the night. I think every home should have a gun for protection.

I don't think about the NRA. I think they're like the Republican Party and the Democratic Party in that they all have smaller fringe groups, nuts, goofballs and fine decent people as members. Not so much the Republicans right this minute, but you get my point.

An NRA endorsement means nothing to me. Let it mean good things to those who like the NRA and let it mean horrible things to those that fear the NRA. Wash in the blood talk turns my mother on, for me...not so much. Rarely does the endorsement of anyone by any group cause me to change my vote. Those in office should do more pleasing the voters than pleasing large powerful dues collecting clubs. Don't ya think?

I do not hunt or fish, though I have done both in my life and it's just not for me. I don't like guns, I don't play with guns...I assume the guns I have inherited still shoot. If not and I'm killed in my home some night....it will be God's will as some of you might say.

If you just need some fear in your life, fear that the Bush 4th Reich will come for our guns. It would be in their best interest if the population of America was unarmed. No one is asking Kerry for his opinion any more. And while I'm not so happy to know my crazy neighbor Eddie has an AK-47, I still don't think anyone is coming for our guns.

PS good show hugh mann....I think you nailed that nicely.

The NRA is more dangerous than Al Queda. Other than guns, there's not a civil liberty they won't cheerfully give up if Der Bush orders them to.

If the NRA were around in the 1770's, we'd still be singing God Save the Queen.

"Can we keep our guns?" "Sure!" "OK, hoist the Union Jack!".

I just saw a VERY strong pro-gun ad by Beebe on the History Channel.

DBI-like, I'm watching a show on "sex in the days of the Romans". Suddenly, there's Beebe in a barnyard, telling me I can keep my squirrel gun.

I'm so happy.

Why would Asa or Governor Elect Beebe want also rans crowding the stage?

When Rod Bryan rides his trike to campaign events does he ring the bell on the handle bars?

Its Israel that's behind all this gun stuff. They give everybody a gun over there so they can shoot little Arab kids whenever they feel like it.

Don't you people get what's going on. Israel is behind the NRA, the NRA is behind the Republicans, and the Republicans are behind Israel.

Come on, real Americans know the truth. Hezbelloa are the guys we should be supporting---them and Syria and Iran.

When the storm troopers go after everyone's guns under the guise of national security, their first targets will be the names on the mailing list of the NRA.

If any you you have ever actually seen and read any of the NRA's literature or visited their website, you'll know that Roland is right on.
I know being pro-gun is a popular stance, especially in the South, but candidates getting the thumbs-up from this sorry outfit score no brownie points with me.
I'm not some wild-eyed crazy advocating taking away guns from law-abiding citizens, because logistically, it just is not gonna happen.
I've got my grandpa's shotgun upstairs as we speak. It could cut in intruder in half instantly, if he made it up the stairs before we heard the wail of the alarm. My spouse carries a loaded nine when we travel, and I have a 38 in a secret, safe, but handy place in my business to protect me is someone decides to rob and kill me. I grew up around guns, but guns were always carefully handled and many lectures about the dangers of guns were delivered.
The NRA is a scary organization, all right. A guy I dated a several years ago had a bunch of their literature and one night he decided to show it to me so that he could prove he was right in being Republican and I was wrong in being a Democrat.
I got a sick feeling, like he was showing me child porn.
TFM's, the NRA

The Second Amendment is just as important as the first.. liberals.
Without the NRA we would have been disarmed long ago. A armed nation is a free nation, Beebe does not believe in the second amendment anymore than the ACLU does.

A armed (sic) nation is also a shot-up nation, conservative.

I am a true liberal who values the Second Amendment. To me, the NRA position on gun ownership is a little * too* liberal.

No report of this event in the newspaper. Did anyone see it on TV? Are we really living in the USSA? I suspect so. Did anyone from the Times cove this event????

The Dem Gaz of course buried it. The NRA endorses three incumbents for Congress and it is front page news. The NRA endorses a candidate for Governor in a closely contested open seat and nothing. Unbelievable

A armed nation is a free nation...
Posted by: John Anderson

Who exactly would take our freedom if we were not armed?

I was talking to a conservative once who told me gun ownership is all that keeps the government from becoming a dictatorship.

I said, Kevin, are you telling me your squirrel gun makes any difference to the government? They have tanks, jet fighters, and nuclear weapons.

His response was to glare at me and walk away.

Like PJ, I also used to be a member of the NRA.

If guns keep us free, what would happen if the military used force on us as if we were Iraq?

I bet we would buckle under quietly. When Republicans expect Iraqis to love us as occupiers, it gives us insight into what they would do in the same situation.

Rod is it true that you told everyone at Don's Weaponary that you were pro gun and you braged about your grandfather having an M-16 and a hugh gun cabinet?

Rod say it ain't so!!

Guns don't kill people, idiots who misconstrue the second amendment do.

The idea that the NRA has kept the country from being disarmed is ridiculous. What is scary is the proliferation of guns combined with the promotion of savagery by the entertainment industry. Now you can see why Charlton "AKA Moses" Heston is leading the NRA.
My uncle was a Texas highway patrolman and a small town chief of police. He told me that a hand gun only has one purpose: to kill another human being.
If you can't control a gun, you don't need to own one. How's that for a gun control philisophy?
Or, howsabout some pithy bumper sticker:

When gun control is idiotic, only idiots will have guns.

My uncle? Retired and became a sportsman, hunting and fishing. His view on the NRA? They didn't do him any favors and he definitely didn't want their support nor would he ever support them.

It appears that Rod is ducking a question. How disappointing. It appears that he is more of a politician that he would like for us to think. What a shame.

Spirit,

I do believe that my 22 pistol and 22 bolt action rifle make a difference to the government as long as the military is made up of free Americans.

It is much easier to get the military to round up and herd unarmed civilians than to get them to fire at and be fired upon by free Americans.

I expect that Hitler knew what he was doing when he got his army to round up the Jews and march them to the train station and then load them up. Under threat of firing squad a soldier could do that part of the deed and still distance them selves from getting blood on their hands.

Hitler knew he could get the 3% of extreme Koolaid drinkers to do the actual gassing but he needed the help of the rest of the military to move the Jews into position so the 3% could do their thing.

Hitler knew that if his "sane" and less indoctrinated soldiers were ordered to just to go into the cities and kill the Jews on the spot, there would have been a revolt by any truely patriotic soldier.

That is how it is important that I have my little pop guns to help keep the government in check.

If you look across the world right now and the recent past it appears the average human has more to fear from his own army/government than from foreign invasion. Sudan, Darfur, Pol Pot, Tienemen Square, etc.

I wonder the fate of the guard troops from Kent State shooting free American college kids. How many of those were wracked with guilt? How many ended up joining the homeless just as many Viet Nam vets did?

Our whole country, constitution, and liberty rely on the area between our soldier's ears where their conscience makes it very hard for them to fire on and be fired on by free American citizens.

George Orwell in 1984 knew that he had to write the story where neighbor was to spy on and turn in neighbor instead of where neighbor was to actually execute neighbor.

Get the help of the masses but leave the actual dirty work to the SS and do it in camps behind tall walls.

That is why the right to bear arms is the foundation of all the other rights in the Bill of Rights.

I can find no mention of the right to bear arms being for sport hunting or collecting heirloom firearms. The Framers seemed to be concerned with issues of importance instead of sissies kissing and marrying, flag burning, forced prayer in schools, etc.

"I wonder the fate of the guard troops from Kent State shooting free American college kids. "

They lived happily ever after. They followed orders.

"... their conscience makes it very hard for them to fire on and be fired on by free American citizens."

Total bullshit. They are taught to kill and not think about it. That is how so many civilians die in Iraq.

I don't believe for one minute that our guns do anything to keep the government in line. That's just the Kool-Ade we are served by the NRA.

Is there an equivalent to the 2nd amendment right to keep & bear arms in the new Iraqi constitution?

"That is why the right to bear arms is the foundation of all the other rights in the Bill of Rights."..Citizen

Your statement would be valid if it were the first listed instead of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom on press and the right to assemble. Strange our Founding Fathers put all of those first and then dealt with state militias.

Re: "It appears that Rod is ducking a question."

I don't usually answer questions from those who choose to hide behind the anonymous moniker but you have openend an unusually rich vein, so here goes:

You were obviously at Don's Weaponry yesterday where you heard a portion of a conversation between me and one of the other revelers. I did confirm that I was not there regarding guns. I also confirmed that I grew up around guns with my grandfather. The point you continue to miss is that I was there because my and your 1st amendment rights are being compromised by the corporate lackies Hutchinson and Beebe. That is why I was there-- to protest the privatization of our government and our press to serve some 2% of our population. If you want to get pissed off about something and shoot your gun in the air. There's a damn good reason. I don't care if you have 10,000 guns and you have them all trained on me, I will not stop until I turn this train around. I don't need a gun, just a megaphone I guess.

Roland:
WHOA! Bro, I have never been a member of the NRA. Furthermore, I will never be a member of the NRA. I think they are a dangerous organization, because they prey on people's fear for their own agenda and for profit.
