Gov. candidates get substantive

John Brummett steps back for a moment and realizes ... there has been substance in the governor's race.

Lately the candidates have been talking about charter schools, pre-K programs, the grocery tax, the state budget surplus and the uses of alternative agricultural products.

So, there you have evidence that the governor's race is not altogether nonsense, even if the nonsense is what you mostly hear. You also have evidence that these candidates might be better men than their behavior sometimes indicates.

Comments

"I haven't even mentioned the independent, Rod Bryan, an impressive fellow with progressive notions whose candidacy is, unfortunately, a quixotic undertaking mostly of potential benefit to Hutchinson - not likely his or his supporters' intent - in that it could erode the typical Democratic base."

The journalists, reporters, and presidents of organizations such as AEA who don't mention "Independent Rod Bryan" is why his campaign is not more pronounced and considered by the voting sector. Instead of taking Rod's sound, forward-thinking ideas and including them in the other candidates' back-and-forth debates and name-calling, pundits such as Brummett leave mention of Rod at the end of their opinion or reporting piece, giving Rod very limited visibility. Word of mouth and Rod's relentless campaign travels are almost all that the voters know about this "impressive fellow."

Rod is appealing to young voters who are just entering the world of politics, disenfranchised voters of all ages from both party camps, and senior adults from his church and town squares across Arkansas.

Many, many people want to hear, read, know more about Rod's issues and are done the greatest disservice when writers like Brummett don't include Rod Bryan, therefore, don't get the whole story.

I find any reporting/opinion piece that excludes candidates false, arrogant, and anti-democratic. It's personally insulting to have my political viewpoint continually ignored by the very persons in position to elevate the dialogue. Please do your job correctly and completely.

"...candidates might be better men than their behavior sometimes indicates."

There you have it: another fool for cheap talk. Laughing all the way to the bank just like the politicians.

I really have not heard much substance from Beebe. Right now, I assume Beebe has it, by a mile or more. But he is talking like Hutchinson.

If Beebe thinks Hutchinson's ideas are so good, I may have to give them another look.

Mike, I'll probably hold my nose and vote for you. But the money ain't enough for me. You gotta close the deal or I'll be UNDECIDED come September.

If Asa had nail marks in his hands and feet I would still not vote for him. If he gave a kidney to a dying black child, I would still not vote for him. If he finds a cure for cancer I will not vote for him.

He is of the party that has rewritten everything America once stood for. His party lied to start a war for oil. His party ignored the dying in New Orleans and are now rebuilding a Disney New Orleans without the old, sick, poor or black. His party has killed 2588 of our soldiers in a war we're losing, in a war for.......we don't know.

So far since 9-11, the Bush administration has failed at everything they've attempted except for tax cuts for the very rich and lighting the fuse that will ignite the entire Middle East. If you're Halliburton you're doing A-OK, all the rest of us suffer in shame.

NO ONE should vote Republican this fall, NO ONE! In the 40s the good Nazis were punished along with the bad, we should follow that lead today. Our grandchildren will thank us some day.
