Play ball!

A source close to the Arkansas Travelers organization tells us that the inaugural Opening Day for the brand-new Dickey-Stephens Field in North Little Rock will be April 12, 2007, and the Travs will face the Springfield Cardinals.

All but two of the skyboxes in the stadium have been sold, and of those that have been reserved, all but two are held on a five-year contract, and all but two will be occupied by organizations that have no previous association with the Travelers.

Your source may have gotten the information from the big sign at the corner of Broadway and the foot of the Broadway bridge that says "Opening Day - April 12, 2007! Arkansas Travelers vs. Springfield Cardinals!"

That sign's been there, what...

4 months?

What a dumbass.

If the finished stadium and high-rise buildings that come along later look anything like the artist's rendition, it will be great. The area from Argenta to I-630 and even farther south is beginning to look like a true city.

Give him a break. I doubt the "source" got this info from the sign - "All but two of the skyboxes in the stadium have been sold, and of those that have been reserved, all but two are held on a five-year contract, and all but two will be occupied by organizations that have no previous association with the Travelers."

Dumbass.

Just wondering: Is there a second sign anywhere? Or is what you're reporting a one-source story?

Bill Valentine posted the info on box sales on the Travelerocity blog today before it was posted here. I'm sure that's the mystery source.

Dumbass!

I'm not mad at anybody, but it is apparently trendy to shout out insults.

Numb Nuts!

They announced opening day the same day they announced the name of the ballpark.

That was, like, a year ago.

But, hey, thanks.

I remember going to Travellers games with my friend Fred Ursery and, often, his son.

I can only wish to all those who go to Traveller's games the great pleasure of a warm Arkansas night, a beer for the old guy, a coke for the small guys, and no notion of the stress associated with big league parks.

Hell, I'd like to go back to a place where it never rains, and baseball where you can see the dust, smell the grass, and have baseball players smile and give a young guy a nod. Though I may never get back there, I'm pleased that it is going to continue in a great pair of cities.

Minor league baseball is one of the great benefits of major league baseball.

Is it true that Bill Valentine gets a sweetheart deal for his own restuarant when this opens????

Pretty stupid to schedule opening day with a team that does not exist at the current time and one that may be involved in a large lawsuit on opening day.

"Pretty stupid to schedule opening day with a team that does not exist at the current time and one that may be involved in a large lawsuit on opening day"

What? I assure you the Springfield Cardinals exist and I am unaware of a lawsuit.

This just in. Someone named "Anonymous" is unaware of a lawsuit.
