( Conway, AR) This Wednesday, Esther Mead will attempt to enlist in the United States Navy as an open lesbian.   Her desire to serve without lying about her sexual orientation directly challenges the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy, which bans openly gay, lesbian and bisexual people from serving.

Since DADT was enacted in 1993, over 11,000 gay service members have been discharged from the Military at a cost of over $364 million to American Taxpayers.

On Wednesday, Esther Mead joins young adults across the country in attempting to enlist, but doing so with integrity.

She is a part of Soulforce's Right to Serve Campaign, which aims to create public awareness about government-sanctioned discrimination and its damaging effects. In thirty cities across the nation, openly gay, lesbian and bisexual young people are attempting to join the nation's military.

If Esther Mead is rejected for being a lesbian, she and her supporters will conduct a sit-in of protest.   Arrests are probable.

Cities that have had recent Right to Serve events include New York, Austin, and Phoenix. Actions are also occurring in Spokane, Madison, and Washington, D.C. this week.

Hell, we need the boots on the ground! Sign em up and ship em out!

Back during the draft for Viet Nam I always thought that was no fair to let the gays out of getting thrown into that meatgrinder.

Heck if you hate homos so bad this would be a way of getting rid of them and getting a little benefit out of it. Sort of like Soilent Green. (It's been a while, is that how to spell it?)

Right now Bushies are offering illegal aliens the fast track to citizenship by military service since they need more boots to untangle the Gordian Knot over there. Maybe lesbians could help.

From: Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
Soylent Green is a 1973 science fiction movie starring Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Joseph Cotten and Chuck Connors. It is loosely based on the 1966 science fiction novella about overpopulation by Harry Harrison, Make Room! Make Room!, but diverges into its own plot points and ideas.
The film's title refers to the fictional artificial food product at the center of its plot. Due to the cult popularity of the film, the term 'soylent green', and the movies famous last line, have become something of a catch phrase. Many subsequent works have referenced Soylent Green for dramatic or comedic effect.
Set in the year 2022, the film depicts a dystopia, a Malthusian catastrophe that takes place because humanity has failed to pursue sustainable development and has not halted population growth. New York City's population is 40,000,000, with over half unemployed. Global warming, air and water pollution have produced a year-round heatwave and a thin yellow smog in the daytime. Food and fuel resources are scarce because of animal and plant decimation, housing is dilapidated and overcrowded, and widespread government-sponsored euthanasia is encouraged as a means of reducing overpopulation.

Harry Harrison coined the word "soylent" from "soy beans" and "lentils", ...

"Soylent Green is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them."
Charlton Heston

God I love Conway...didn't use to...but then stuff like this happens. Obviously I'm easily entertained these days. I'm excited when any of my fellow citizens say 'Hey, you can't treat me like this.' That it's a woman makes it special.

And now we can get drinks afterwords.

I had heard that the Armed Forces do not discriminate based on sexua orientation but only follow FEDERAL LAW set by our eleced officials and Congress? Anyone with more insight know if that is true?

I know how things are S'POSED to be, but this is how they really ARE: you take a female sailor, put her among male crew, send ship to sea and --- VOILA! --- somebody's being tried for rape or sexual harassment.
Why can't we admit that some mixing of the sexes is not appropriate to the moment or situation?
By the way, I was in the navy and why do you think sailors on liberty have the reputation they've so richly earned?

Obviously Louie the Chauvanist Dolt isn't paying attention, but has opened the door for the best off-color joke of the day...

Every 28-days with an all femaile crew would bring a whole new meaning to the hunt for Red October.

Yet I digress, institutionalized sexism and bigotry is a cancerous vestige of an all-male work-force, not just an all-male militia.

Louie, if you can't secure our nation without raping your fellow soldier or graping her tatas--NEWSFLASH--perhaps you are the one unfit for service.

If that's how things ARE we're long past due a change; and I'm for changing a system that denies women career opportunities because men can't keep their pants zipped.

I do not understand why gay people would want to fight for a country where:

Gay people are beaten to death.

Gay people aren't allowed to have families and children.

Gay people are kicked out of their churches.

Gay people can be fired from their jobs for being gay.

Gay people are demonized by the right wing so they can win elections.

I simply don't understand why they'd want to be in the military. I'd say: "Screw you Uncle Sam. Fight your own damn wars."

A nice little interview with Paul Cameron concerning gays in the military.

This statement isn't entirely true these days:
"Every 28-days with an all femaile crew would bring a whole new meaning to the hunt for Red October."

Many women now opt for birth control that makes what used to be the monthly "visit' into one that only comes maybe every 3 to 6 months or possibly less often. These are the days of more control for women, which is a blessing for them, and very useful for those female soldiers.

Well, as long as they can get the birth control. The right wingers would probably hate this.

To be more on topic: if the gays want to fight in a stupid illegal war, you would think that those that hate them would be just fine with them going and risking life and limb to do it.

I am cornfuseD.

Since when did the local news stations start using the Arkansas Times Blog as a news source?

Kind of scary....I might provide the subject for a news story just by posting here?

I guess it is easier to get the info this way.

thanks for thinking on and discussing the topic.

the "Military Readiness Enhancement Act" would replace the discriminatory policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
