For the record

The D-G, in following up today on A$a's strike on gubernatorial candidate Mike Beebe on payday lending, referenced the Arkansas Business article we'd linked earlier on contributions from the payday lending industry to the Democratic Party and Beebe. The D-G article said contributors to Beebe weren't listed.

Actually, the article did specifically note a $2,000 contribution to Beebe last year from his old buddy, lobbyist Don Tilton, through Tilton's Capitol Group lobbying firm. Tilton also gave state Dems $2,100 and $1,000 to the Arkansas Republican Party. Tilton lobbies for many interests, of course, but payday lending is a big one.  Angel Srygley of Monticello, whose husband operates a chain of 50 payday lending shops in Arkansas, also gave $2,000 to Beebe.

This remains a guilt-by-association ploy by A$a, given Beebe's vote against the permissive payday lending bill, the legislation's sponsorship the leadership of the effort to beat or repeal the permissive legislation by Beebe aide and backer Cliff Hoofman; and Attorney General Beebe's recent lawsuits against some payday lenders. Nonetheless, it's an industry so predatory and so outrageous in its usurious practices and methods to avoid court judgments that the wise candidate bends over backward to avoid any association. And promises to work to repeal the legislation.

Comments

Actually Max, the article says:

"Bob Srygley of Monticello and Cosby Hodges of Fort Smith and companies they control distributed a total of $26,000. Srygley and Hodges co-founded Mount Rushmore Loan Co. of Sioux Falls, S.D., which makes loans through 50 payday lending stores in Arkansas."

ARK. BLOG Not to Beebe directly. Those are Dem Party contributions

Beebe's continued trotting out of old votes in the Legislature to claim anti-payday lending bona fides is getting really tiresome. What people really want to know is why he has done so little in four years as attorney general to stop these loan sharks.

The bottom line is this: if Mike Beebe really wanted to crack down on payday lenders, he wouldn't be taking money from their lobbyist and the wife of one of their biggest operators, and he wouldn't allow the state Democratic Party to serve as a money laundering station for payday lending money to benefit his campaign.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"--Edmund Burke

"..an industry so predatory and so outrageous in its usurious practices and methods to avoid court judgments that the wise candidate bends over backward to avoid any association."

Well, another vote for Mr Lendall or hold my nose and vote for Mike Beebe?
Two strikes against Beebe..the gay adoption bit - should have stayed 5 mi away and this bunch of legalized theives, Payday Lenders, whose money is too dirty for anyone, Demo's and Repubs.

"What people really want to know is why he has done so little in four years as attorney general to stop these loan sharks."

ADG 9/15 "But he said some payday lenders in Arkansas that are based out of state are regulated by the federal government. He said action by Arkansas' state government can't challenge their right to do business. He said Congress could take action to help shut some of those operations down."

Noting from NBC evening news, 9/14, payday lenders have sprung up around military bases putting soliders in hock in record numbers.
They are now "considering legislation" to bring it to a halt. But it's doubtful because this goes much further. Credit card companies operate from S.Dakota too and Repubs are not going to pass legislation that restricts them
in their pursuit of 19-25% interest on cards, the right to arbitrarily raise their rates based upon factors outside the credit agreement.
Will be sticky at best.

Enacting or amending legislation to eliminate or more closely regulate payday lenders is a major task, but returning their money shouldn't take long at all. That's the first move Beebe should make.

Mike Beebe---> Experienced and appealing as governor.

Mike Beebe w/ Pay Day Lender Support ---> Less appealing

A$A ---> Mean, dubious family, ineffective at everything he has ever done.

Give me Beebe.

Julianna,

You don't have to vote for a "less appealing" candidate for governor, because there are choices other than Beebe and Hutchinson.

Green Party nominee Jim Lendall served in the state Legislature for eight years and never let himself get bought off by special interests.

Another positive choice would be independent candidate Rod Bryan. Like Jim, Rod doesn't spend every waking moment (as the major party candidates do) shilling for money from people who want to buy access to state government.

Don't hold your nose when you vote. Have both hands free and vote for Jim Lendall or Rod Bryan on Nov. 7.

Julianna,

And if you can convince enough of your friends/family to vote for Lendall or Bryan then we'll end up with A$A! and everyone will be happy.
