Who you calling little?

Somebody asked the other day whatever happened to the Little Rock nickname contest. The city will announce preferences in balloting on six finalists at 10 a.m. Monday. The city said there was an "overwhelming choice" from America's Gem, Southern Comfort, Rock Town, Rock City, The Rock, or River City.

Gotta be The Rock, don't you think?

Hope nobody draws a parallel with Alcatraz -- dangerous and a hard place from which to achieve escape velocity.

You called it Max.

I know its always felt that way to me and I've been here over 50 years.

My favorite:

"Home of the strip Mall"

Been told by insiders that it's going to be "The Rock"... Of course, without an expanded jail and more and more criminals walking around free, I guess that we could make Alcatraz jokes.

Interesting new post on Arkansas Watch blog. www.arkansaswatch.blogspot.com

Out of those, "The Rock" is the only unique one that might actually catch on. A lot of people already call it that.

Thank God we have finally have something really important for LR to worry about. I guess we should call this the crowning achievement of the Dailey mayorship. Lap it up Jim, this is as relevant as you will ever be.

Not that I have a vote, but DJs and just about everyone else I know have referred to LR as "The Rock" as far back as I can remember. So why not just make it official?

I like River City. As in trouble right here in River City.

But it's probably The Rock. Maybe Sean Connery can be here for the announcement.

Problem with twin cities or river city is that most cities towns or burgs would qualify. Plenty already call themselves that.

Only a few towns like Boulder or Slippery Rock might be "The Rock". After that wrestler fades away, we would have it to ourselves.

It might not be a great nickname but it is better than DogTown!

I'm surprised one regular contributor has suggested "LR549". I also have heard it referred to as Fayetteville South when the Hawgs play in town.

Or how about "Hopeless" since Clinton and Huckabee will be departed from its scene by then.

Maybe the "Unofficial Capital of Jesusland"........

I don't know, Citizen1, Dogtown has a nice flow to it. The major problem is it pisses most of my fellow Dogtownians off because they perceive it as a sleight (and they're usually right). I wish they could just embrace our scuzzy criminal heritage and revel in it as I do. But I agree with your assessment of "Twin Cities" and "River City". Minneapolis already has the Twin Cities, home of the - yes-- Twins. And do we really need another excuse to say "we've got trouble in River City" ?

I'll bet the overwhelming choice was The Rock, but back in the '70s when everyone was "modulating" on CB radios, truckers had nicknames for most cities, large and small. Big D, Shakytown, Chi-town, etc., and the place at the I-40 + I-30 junction was Rock City.

These final contenders for the official nickname are so lame. Little Rock has lost its identity somewhere along the way, and it's a cringeworthy affair to see this town choose mediocrity over uniqueness.

I guess its too late to suggest Predicatable Post Modern Decadent Sprawl from Which There is No Return Apart From the Collapse of Society as We Know it? Maybe that's too positive.

Does it really matter? Taglines come and taglines go, and ad agency execs have kids who need new shoes.

REAL nicknames are bestowed by others. I could call myself "The Rock" but do you think my friends would start using that name? Maybe as they laughed until they couldn't breathe.

"Maybe the "Unofficial Capital of Jesusland"........

noppo Jake. Siloam Springs would sue you.

I like the name we already have here in my birthplace...

Little Rock...

I agree with Roland. You can't pick a nickname, others pick it for you. If you pick it yourself, you are probably a publicity seeking sports-figure or a wannabe. (BTW- "The Rock" is already taken by a "wrestler/actor" - maybe we could adopt him as our new spokesperson.
