Dueling stem cell ads
By now you probably know about the commercial recorded by actor Michael J. Fox in behalf of Democratic U.S. Senate candidates, including Claire McCaskill, who is challenging Republican incumbent Jim Talent in Missouri.
It's an affecting ad, because Fox is showing the physical effects of Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disorder of the nervous system. (Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh accused Fox of "acting" or intentionally not taking his medicine to exaggerate the tremors characteristic of Parkinson's. Limbaugh has since apologized -- sort of.)
Fox is supporting McCaskill because she supports allowing stem-cell research, which scientists think could lead to a cure to diseases like Parkinson's. Talent voted against allowing it.
Now comes word that St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jeff Suppan, who is starting tonight in Game 4 of the World Series, recorded a commercial urging Missouri residents to vote against a state constitutional amendment on the general election ballot that would allow stem-cell research.

deafening silence...
Still waiting to hear from actual Parkinson's sufferers (like Michael J. Fox) who wholely oppose stem cell research and would not take a complete cure if it were developed from stem cell research.
So far we've heard from "Raymond's" wife, a baseball player and a guy who isn't Jesus, but plays him on tv. Major scientific cred from these three.

I would not hold it against a stem-cell research opponent if they used a cure that was developed from the research. I agree that it would be interesting to hear from Parkinson's victims how far they are willing to go with the research.
One of my parents has Parkinsons - but I would not advocate harvesting fetuses as a source of stem cells for research, even if it would lead to a cure. If the cells were obtained in a manner that protected the sanctity of a fetus (ie not as a result of abortion or other culturing of human life for disposable purposes) I could advocate for it.

Limbaugh has not apologized. This is what he said today:
"I stand by what I said. I take back none of what I said. I wouldn't rephrase it any differently. It is what I believe; it is what I think. It is what I have found to be true."

Don, please explain what you mean by "harvesting fetuses."
Posted by: mag
|
October 25, 2006 08:10 PM
"Harvesting fetuses" comes from the collection of unused "fetuses" created by labs for in vitro fertilization and using them in stem-cell research. At this point, they are only in very early cellular growth, more an amoeba than a human form.
Rather than seeing them used for something worthwhile, so-called right-to-lifers would rather see them wasted and destroyed. What could extend life for living human beings is thrown away to satisfy an inane idea that a microscopic speck of cells represents a human being.

Limbaugh took back the allegation Fox had been exaggerating the effects of Parkinson's:
"Now, people are telling me that they have seen Michael J. Fox in interviews and he does appear the same way in the interviews as he does in this commercial. All right, then I stand corrected .. I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act."
But Limbaugh added : "Michael J. Fox is allowing his illness to be exploited and in the process is shilling for a Democrat politician."
Fair enough. It's true. There's nothing wrong with that; Fox wants himself, and others afflicted with his disease, to have a better chance at recovery. The Democrat supports more expansive research than does the Republican, so he supports the Democrat. We're always saying people should vote their pocketbooks; is there any reason they shouldn't vote their quality of life?

Anyhow, what I was really hoping was that people would be commenting on Asa's new ad with all the kids accusing politicians of being lying cheats, and at the end a little girl saying she wants to be one of those lying politicians, just like Mike Beebe. That is the worst ad I have seen this cycle, and I sincerely hope Asa continues to run it, because he will lose by 20 points instead of 10.

Thanks mag. You're correct. They are embryos. That's why I put the word fetuses in quotation marks.
Additionally, I think the reason Rush says he can handle any argument with half his brain tied behind his back is because he wants it to be in closer proximity to where the other half of his brain is situated....up his hindquarters. He and Ann Coulter are the Laurel and Hardy of the Republican party.

I guess it's not quite hoyle to wish a terminal illness on Jeff Suppan or Raymond's wife. Ms. Heaton announced years ago she is very conservative though she couldn't really tell why. She has lots of kids, it will not be fun should one of them get sick.
What do you do with people who would rather inflict their core beliefs on sick people than see them cured. What can one make of Don? Maybe Don hasn't seen the end stages of Parkinson's yet...it's my new worst feared disease. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney do not deserve to die of Parkinson's..though they're close to the line.
I have a whole lot of dead relatives buried in Missouri that might have benefited from stem cell research if they had been doing it 40 years ago. One was my favorite Aunt who died a silent stiff piece of lumber 2 years ago after 10 years of Parkinson's. Only her eyes let us know she was 100% of aware what was going on. A prisoner of her own body.
I love humans better than I love mystical higher powers or their cross bound sons. You people are nuts to deny help for people who are suffering because you see a miniature Pat Boone in every Petri dish. Die a terrible death if you must, but please let the rest of us have the best science there is.
I am not for ripping an unborn child from any warm body, but we're talking embryos here. Embryos that will be flushed. Embryos you can't take home and feed with an eye dropper until they get well and fly away. Please whack yourself and Rush with your Bible and step up to the 19th century so we can throw you all a rope from 2006.
Stem cell research opponents are one step away from the religious nuts of the Middle East when they work to deny others the right to be cured. Please evolve.....please.

I'm also wondering if it's too late to get something on the November 7th ballot? I would like for the voters of the United States to be able to vote on putting Rush Limbaugh to death on December 25th, sort of a Christmas present to the country.
I don't really care if it's by lethal injection or gun shot or being drug behind my Ford pickup. If more Americans vote to not kill Rush, then I'll be happy to abide by it. I stand by honest elections.
It's just too bad if America votes to put Rush to death that there is nothing medical science can profit from his bloated, drug laced carcass.
Let's give Rush a thumbs up or down on November 7th. It's time to make America a better place for all to live.

I'm so glad we could hear from the 19th century before we went to bed. Ain't no one killing no babies for their own greed or luct for life...must be a code word for Rove.
NO ONE ON EARTH is for killing a baby. It's very upsetting that our government has killed so many babies in Iraq the last 3 years. If you want to cry about something chasv, there's a real real good reason.
Stem cell research is about using some goo that might, just might be a baby some day. Especially when talking about unused, unwanted frozen fertilized eggs, it's ridiculous to call them babies. There are thousands of real born-ed babies nobody wants, cry for them...they need it.
Quit letting uneducated people fill your head with lies. Killing babies is not what Michael J. Fox is asking for. Unwanted human DNA might cure him and me and a whole lot of other people who are alive, loved and loving and doing their part to make the world a better place. No one is asking for babies to be killed for any reason.

That Rush is a hypocritical, lying blowhard is no secret (he's actually comedic...now his 'followers' are another story altogether). I especially love how someone with his 'personal' track record (divorces, drugs, deferments) routinely lectures the country on all those so-called 'value' issues. But the truth is that Rush's words more accurately reflect today's Republican than all their cleaned-up words do. 'They' speak a lot about love, god and compassion while crafting policies that reek of hate and intolerance...and stem cell research and medical marijuana are two good examples. Does anyone actually think that 'God' would object to any program that would help the poor/sick? Or that 'God' loves Muslims less than Christians? Or that the alleviating suffering isn't always better than allowing suffering? Or that 'She' gives a damn about placing Ten Commandment monuments throughout our public buildings?
I'm with DBI...I love people more than anything. But I think God does too...it's his followers who drip hatred and intolerance for their fellow humans. And the current crop of Republican 'Goddies' are a sick and twisted lot. I hope to God that we rid our country's policies of their hateful ways.

What's so damn sad about our once,
most-advanced-nation-on-Earth is that a doped up DJ is part of making what should be scientific, medical policy. Now quickly lets find another expert in the field like house painter turned announcer Shawn Hannity, he's so educated and bright as last night's vomit.
Why in the hell would a baseball player know anything about medical science? If they had allowed such a person to comment on a scientifically complex issue in 1960 the side trying it would have been laughed out of the arena.
I can't believe this de-evolution of thought going on in this nation.
There's more physics contained in my wireless mouse than Rush Limblah could comprehend in a lifetime.

Chasv,
If you've masturbated or had a wet dream or had sex, you've killed millions of potential babies because that's how many microscopic sperm cells die each time, all capable of becoming human beings.
So why don't you quit this holier than thou crap you "murderer."
On the other hand, I guess you must shop at stores that sell embryo clothes, embryo food, and embryo toys. Actually, unless you were trained, you couldn't recognize an embryo under the microscope. Definitely aint a baby, for sure.
When your party does something about poverty, education, and health; when it quits killing innocent civilians and torturing people; when it stops letting Christian Taliban dogmatists take control of this country, then I might listen to someone present a more valid argument than yours.
As I've said before, I prefer to see spiritual fruits than religious nuts.
Try not to turn your bed into a crime scene tonight. Wouldn't want the death of all those cells on your hand (or other places, for that matter).

Because of a late night, last minute visit to myspace.com before bedtime, a funeral service will be held this afternoon in the front parlor of my house for the millions of sperm that were killed last night upstairs in my bedroom while my wife was sleeping oh so close.
The millions of dead sperm request no flowers or hymns, only that I give more thought to the things I do far too damn often, that kills millions of babies in the privacy of my bedroom. Babies that could have grown up to be Pat Boone or George W. Bush or the next Rush Limbaugh.
I am ashamed of myself. I am expecting a knock on the door any minute since I suspect my right hand is going to be charged as an accessory to murder. Oh the humanity!

Read your scripture. Works mean nothing, because who is perfect in the eyes of the Lord?
No one truly repents (turns away from) of all their evil, and no one ever confesses all their sins.
And true Christians don't make judgments on how is saved and who isn't. Unless you presume to know the mind of God, in which case you blaspheme.

chasv,
this isn't church. we don't throw religion in each others face. we don't go around rudely telling people that our god is the meanest s.o.b. around and that he hates anyone who doesn't kowtow to him. we don't make nasty remarks that insinuate only we are blessed with the truth.
perhaps the worst thing you've done is to make us all eager to avoid anything you're associated with because you're just such a little egotistical creep about your religion. of all the people who place their thoughts on this blog, I guarantee you that you've got the least respect. if you think you're making a valuable witness for your god, you are sadly mistaken.
just because you believe in something doesn't make it true and doesn't mean we have to believe in it also. to some of us, you are livnig proof that religion is divisive and hate-filled dogma that does more harm than good.
do you want to know something interesting? the romans coined the term "atheist" to describe the early Christians because they didn't believe in gods.
keep your ugly pronouncements to yourself. if you can't argue in a civil manner and accept the fact that you're making religion a barrier to understanding then you indeed make a porr messenger for your beliefs.
i don't mind you having religion. you probably need it to fill some void in your life. just don't think that it makes you a better person than others or offers any guarantees that are better than our own choices.
it gets real annoying when you use the cross and the bible to cause blunt trauma with your foul attacks. at your present rate, there'll be a long line outside the gates of Hades just to get away from your sorry ass.

1 Samuel 15:3
"Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass."
In one verse, your god commands genocide, infanticide, the destruction of families, homes and innocent creatures. This is who you worship? You harp about killing babies when your God ordered the destruction of babies and children?
