Independents going with Dems

A Washington Post-ABC News poll says Independents this year favor Democrats over Republicans by a two-to-one margin.

With debate underway in Washington about possible course changes in Iraq, Americans cite the war as the most important issue in determining their vote next month more often than any other issue, and those who do favor Democrats over Republicans by 76 percent to 21 percent.

Independents are poised to play a pivotal role in next month's elections because Democrats and Republicans are basically united behind candidates of their own parties. Ninety-five percent of Democrats said they will support Democratic candidates for the House, while slightly fewer Republicans, 88 percent, said they plan to vote for their party's candidates.

The independent voters surveyed said they plan to support Democratic candidates over Republicans by roughly 2 to 1 -- 59 percent to 31 percent -- the largest margin in any Post-ABC News poll this year.

Comments

I just returned from 10 days on business and pleasure in Las Vegas and California and I see things are still going against the Republicans at every turn.

People are in one of those "time for a change" moods. Judging from what I saw on TV out west, even conservative Nevada seems to be ready to turn them out. Utah may be their only remaining southwestern state.

The Republicans have had 20 years of gravy by just saying they are not Democrats. Now I predict at least 10 years of back-at-ya by just reminding people of the corruption 16 years of Republican rule brought us.

On a travel note, I certainly can recommend Yosemite in October. The foliage against the granite backdrop was beautiful. Now I've got to go back some spring and see the waterfalls at their height. The hiking was great and not a bear to be seen!

I am always fair, well, I at least try to be fair as much of the time as possible. And in that vein I want to offer up some ground to our President.

Yesterday Tony Snow announced the President is going to abandon the phrase, "Stay the Course". Maybe after years and years on the job President Bush is getting a little smarter. "Stay the Course" has served him well in the past. It's short and sweet, to the point and the dimmer Republicans can remember it.

But since the War in Iraq for Oil has been a 3 year grinding car wreck and our enemy has been able to hand us our asses on a daily basis ever since Mission Accomplished day, clearly "Stay the Course" has worn out it's welcome and it's meaning. The phrase should now be reserved for suicidal people to use as they jump off high buildings or prepare to jump in front of speeding buses.

Proudly spoken as our troops are defeated at every turn just looks....well, dumb. For every one who fans the flames of war in Iraq with a Bible there are 2 like me who believe we will lose because we started an unjust war fought for unjust reasons of greed and lust for power and so Karma will in the end hand the US their next defeat. It's not what I hope or wish, it's what I am afraid of.

But back to being fair. If GWB is going to retire "Stay the Course" then I will give tit for tat and retire "Stupid Retarded Moron". As the Bush administration will no doubt continue to use the words stay and the and course, I reserve the right to use the words stupid and retarded and moron, just not all clumped together in a handy, easy to remember phrase. See...the reaching across the isle is fun, no wonder Mark Pryor does it so often!

PS after watching the Boozman-Anderson debate last night, someone needs to get the news to Boozman. He's still "Stay the Course" and "Cut and Running" and all kinds of last month news. Someone on his staff needs to spend 50 cents on this week's paper and make him watch a few hours of CNN. Welcome to October Johnny!

Independents and womenfolk will determine this race. There is not much either side can screw up to change the minds of polarized voters, like me, and like my neighbor who votes Republican heavy but surrounding us are people who don't give a damn about politics except they are sick of Republicans and their dumb-ass war and high deficits.

DBI, Woody had several opportunities to call Boozman's hand last nite and he didn't. Sad. Boozman when commenting on the deficit said it's only 1-2% of GDP.
Well, when in hell did the entire GDP
belong to Congress? If you are going to compare debt to GDP then you must consider Public and PRIVATE debt which is damn staggering, higher than it was during the pre Great Depression years.
Woody also failed to counter Boozman's contention that he does not vote with Bush that much! What a whopper. Woody didn't have his numbers down. Sad. Boozman votes with Bush 96% which is a near perfect voting record.
Woody made no mention of Boozman voting to CUT student loan money by 50%, no mention of it by Woody. I think Woody just gave away the debate.
