The Gay Old Party

Just in time for Sunday afternoon readers, NY Bill comes through with a free link to another great Frank Rich column, this one on the two faces of the Republican Party when it comes to gay people. They tolerate them -- rely on many, even -- as staffers and advisers, even as they cynically exploit fear of them in elections. Can they continue to have it both ways?

Clinton gives us the quote of the week, speaking at Iowa Democratic Party rally:

"(Democrats) believe in evidence and argument, not assertion and attack," Clinton said. "...We've got a big responsibility. Forget about 2008. Forget about the politics. Just go out and find somebody and look them dead in the eye and say 'You know, this is not right'...This is America. We can do better and this year, it's a job that Democrats have to do alone."

"I have never seen the American people so serious. Look how quiet it is in here," Clinton said. "People know things are out of whack, that fundamentally the order of, the rhythm of public life and our common life as Americans has been severely disturbed."

This is a winning campaign theme. Strip it down to the essentials and go, go, go from now til November elections.

I love you mag, always right on point!

As I read Frank Rich I started having this feeling like I've read this all before and about half way thru I realized why it seemed familiar. If you'll remove the words gay and homosexual and put in Negro or black, this column could have been written in 1964.

It was the same thing then, people being surprised that a Negro was working for someone, that a Negro was handling a big job behind the scenes. That black people were employed on a friendly basis by well known racists. Even that black women had become pregnant by the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Strom Thurman.

What a surprise! Gay people work in DC! What a surprise, gay people hold high level jobs and do them well! What a surprise, Republicans employee gay people at the same time they decry the evils of homosexuality! Human nature never changes.

I'm sure if we could go back to 1876, we'd find Yankees being kicked around for employing former Confederates. If we could go back to 1786, we'd find some of our forefathers in hot water for employing former loyalist to Great Britain.

For me the surprise of homosexuality is long over. Who on earth doesn't know and like a gay person, or relative? Gay people are plentiful and more like you and I than not. We only hear of gay people when they're caught doing something out of the norm.

But if you look around the same can be said for the rest of us, like when some hetero guy takes over a school and shoots 10 little girls, killing 5 of them. Or a black guy hides in the trunk of a Chevy with a rifle and kills people for sport.

It's time to quit being surprised by gay people. It hurts their feelings and makes us look stupid and mean. And it's high time we realize if anyone is gay, it's Karl Rove!

My hat is off to you again, DBI, but Is Rove gay?
His father is, as we all know. Cheney's daughter is gay, also.
And the list goes on and on.
Here is what really pisses me off: The Republican party's platform discriminates against gay people, when it is clear that gay people are just ordinary people.
BUT, Republicans still continue to pretend to hate gays, even as they love them when they are their family members
Or, are they pretending to love their family members?
I can't decide.

The ethical contortions a gay person must go through to support all the orchestrated homo-hate coming out of the Republican party are astounding...and what a rationalization process. No wonder our government is so corrupt...lying and deception come easy to this crew.

Being gay would be a step up for slimy Rove.
