The Republican trump cards
Brummett writes: Battered on presumed strengths -- national security and trust among "values" voters -- the Republican Party has two cards to play -- would-be House Democratic leaders Nancy Pelois and Charles Rangel. That sexual politics and race figure in their appeal is not exactly coincidental.

Comments
"On one side is the disaster of Iraq, ..North Korea,... demise of Mark Foley. On the other are the Republican poster children, Nancy and Charlie."
He forgot one more side, "the Wild Democrats" according to Geo H.W. Bush;
""If we have some of these wild Democrats in charge of these committees, it will be a ghastly thing for our country. "They'd be pushing through all kinds of crazy legislation," he added, "And they would be issuing the subpoenas, dragging people in just to be getting headlines."
Well Repugs know all about that.

Assuming Diebold won't come into play, and I don't assume that at all, the November 7th elections across the country will have as much to do with the theory of authoritarians put forth in John Dean's book, Conservatives Without Conscience.
With the exception of the blue hairs who don't know better than to watch Fox News and therefore be scared to death each day for 6 years and who will vote Republican because of reduced brain activity that would tell them better. The majority of people who vote Republican next month will be the hard core authoritarian types.
Of that group there will be the straight line voters, some of those rumored to be staying home this election. The rest are those that think their tax cuts are more important than their and our children's future. The ones who in their hearts want and enjoy the idea of all non-white and/or non-Christian people being blown to bits. In their view this world revolves around the USA and the USA revolves around them.
Then you have the rightwing nuts who pick and choose their own reality. The ones that will ignore the book out today saying that Bush-Cheney-Rove secretly laugh at them. The unholy trinity uses these Christian groups like toilet paper because they know how to play on their outsized egos. They're egos get a good stroking, but nothing falls into their pockets and they're dumb enough to keep licking Bush's behind anyway.
The last group that will vote Republican next month are just plain dumb. Too dumb to follow the news. Too dumb to understand truth from lies. Too dumb to see that their Republican heroes are leading us straight to rack and ruin, to hell, to an unending disaster.
Nothing can be done with these groups. They cannot be reeducated, they are hopeless. We must hope that their numbers have become so small that even with Diebold's help they'll still come up short.
This is our last chance to stop Bush-Cheney. Another 2 years and their power grab will be complete and our country will be in ruins. Think real hard when you vote this November 7th.

The "wild Democrats" could easily replace the "wild" Neo-con Repub leadership we have experienced: Gingrich, Livingston, Burton, Hyde, DeLay, Hastert, Rove, Cheney, Wolfowitz. No wonder they are worried.

CJ,
Here's some research info for you the next time you holler "race." Although no party is immune to it, the Republicans have a much more pronounced penchant for it among their grass root supporters.
From the Washington Post:
Studies produced evidence that emotions and implicit assumptions often influence why people choose their political affiliations, and that partisans stubbornly discount any information that challenges their preexisting beliefs.
A study found that supporters of President Bush and other conservatives had stronger self-admitted and implicit biases against blacks than liberals did.
The analysis found that substantial majorities of Americans, liberals and conservatives, found it more difficult to associate black faces with positive concepts than white faces -- evidence of implicit bias. But districts that registered higher levels of bias systematically produced more votes for Bush.
Jon Krosnick, a psychologist and political scientist at Stanford University, who independently assessed the studies, said, "If anyone in Washington is skeptical about these findings, they are in denial. We have 50 years of evidence that racial prejudice predicts voting. Republicans are supported by whites with prejudice against blacks. If people say, 'This takes me aback,' they are ignoring a huge volume of research."
