Kerry apologizes
I guess he had to so as to quell the furor.
But after hearing the full context of the remark several times last night, it seemed clear to me that it was a clumsily botched reference to Bush, not troops. Think about it. Do you really think a combat veteran of Vietnam would say the only people serving in Iraq were those too dumb to avoid it?
The media successfully made it appear otherwise however. NPR this morning was just one good example of flat misstatements that Kerry had said losers were serving in Iraq.
Go here for full coverage of press distortions. Or I should say regurgitation of Republican spin.

Comments
You know it just doesn't matter. Kerry could stick a whole flag pole up his ass, flag and all and have a signed note from Jesus and the right-wingers won't hear a damn word he is saying.
They hear what they want and that is why after all these years they are still asking WHY WE HATE AMERICA. What a load of crap. And here our most famous draft dodger is again calling a hero of Vietnam a commie pinko fag.....again. Remember, at least Jane Fonda went to Vietnam. GWB ran like hell up until he started beating his manly chest and declaring himself a hero of the National Guard (who couldn't find him for a year).
If it makes you feel better to think that John Kerry is a terror lover, go right ahead and believe it. But you'll still be wrong and history will prove differently when we get over this period of national crisis and disgrace brought to us by Bush-Cheney the true leaders of draft dodging and running from commitments. And damn Kerry for apologizing.

Poor Kerry's attempt at make a statement failed. I, clearly understood what he meant. The Republicans are grasping at anything they think will pull the attention away from them. What's so damn funny is, it's keeping the focus on Iraq, where it need to be. Bush doesn't know his history and neither his "right wing" Republican followers, if so, they would have known the culture of the land and the passion of the people. Yeah, Sadaam is an evil man, but who, as Americans are we to judge with as much bloodshed in this country, starting with the stealing of land and killing people to to take control. Yes, it happened in America! Now, how many of our soldiers have died to defend what? Oil? An arrogant ass president, and a group of old ass men that need to retire from government. When we don't learn from history, it will repeat itself. Boy, do I miss Bill!

Sorry but I am with Citizen's Journal on this one.
We break it all down on The Creek
here it is from the jump maxwick:
Look, George W. Bush is the worst thing to ever happen to this country in a long time. That should be a biblical commandment it is such an absolute
I talked to Jesus last night and he even said George W. is the worst leader he has ever seen.
BUT there is no denying it, W. is a hell of a politician
John Kerry sucks.
He just could not stand to be out of the limelight now that Democrats were making a strong push up the middle and so he struts around California like his is running for President and screwing up jokes he is not capable of delivering in the first place.
The way the joke came out was blatantly offensive and he should have apologized moments later
Instead in what should be a monumantal election where we throw failed Reublican leadership out of office we have a rehash of 2004: George W. vs. John Kerry
Well, I don't like either of those options and neither do most Americans.
If people in America are voting FOR Harold Ford Jr. over bob corker and FOR Jon Tester over conrad burns and FOR Jim Webb over george allen...DEMOCRATS WILL WIN
If we are voting for john kerry over george w, bush...WE WILL LOSE
NOW John Kerry go away and Never Come Back!!!

Kerry's comment referred to Bush and he was correct. Bush is a joke. Kerry should not appologize because Republicans are too stupid to understand what he really meant. Any person that thinks Kerry would insult the troops is a 100% moron.

His alledged apology was yet another fuck-up.
If Kerry had really been a politician he should have done a challenge apology.
"My fellow Americans, due to messing up a joke I got the wrong message out.
I would like to do two things:
1.Offer an apology for messing up a joke and
2-challenge George Bush and Dick Cheney to apologize for lying about this illegal Iraq war"
That would have done it.

From another blog:
"Where was Bush's apology after he ridiculed the supposed purpose, mission and raison d'etre of nearly 3,000 mother's sons who marched to war on a tissue of lies and came back in flag-draped coffins?
At the 60th annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association in March 2004, Bush narrated a slideshow of images that showed him puzzled looking around the Oval Office, under tables and behind doors.
'Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere,' he mused.
'No, no weapons over there.'
'Maybe under here?,' Bush chuckled as fat vacuous Republican stooges in the audience smacked their lips amidst fits of laughter and applause for their gracious leader.
Two and a half years later and Bush has failed to apologize for his WMD joke, failed to admit the error of his ways in giving a one finger salute to the crying wives, mothers and daughters who never saw their heroes return home.
Recall also what elitist luminary and still reputed Bush advisor Henry Kissinger said about the troops.
'Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy.'
That sums up the entire attitude of the Neo-Con overlords and their arrogance in sacrificing human lives on a whim for an imperial agenda but then crying wolf when Kerry merely hints at the fact that joining the army may not be such a bright idea when a Bush is in office."

Maybe you could start a

You could have simulated surrenders to the enemy and mock trials where you put each other on trial for defending America. You could even have a medal toss event.

Well, like I said the wingnuts hear what they want to hear and there is no telling them anything. Most of them say they regularly hear the voice of Jesus......so talking to them is like talking to rabid beavers on crack.
The news on CNN tonight brightened my day at Campo De No Fumar Hospital. Seems another Florida Representative had to resign today. State Rep. Ralph Arza last month got caught calling a school principal a nigger. Skip the crap about the N word...this Republican Rep called the man a nigger.
Then to make things worse when he found out who squealed on him he called the guy repeatedly at home and left messages on the answering machine saying Hey Bitch, you my bitch, bless you bitch...where's my bitch you bitch. Well......all I can say is, keep it classy Republicans!
Click on my name and listen to America's newest ex-Republican politician. Does this mean Jeb W. Bush is all alone down there in Florida??? It's going to be a slaughter on November 7th!

CJ,
You are a case in point.
I should have clarified mine though. There are two factions on that side: Those that pour fuel on what they know to be a bogus fire; and those who believe the crap they are being fed. Actually, I think you're the former. But I could be wrong.

This whole episode is a sad reminder of how the current trend is to disparage all candidates of an entire political party based on inane, stupid, inadvertent or brain-glitch verbal slips made by one of their representatives.
This is not the exclusive prerogative of either party. See what happens when you hear the latest Bushism, Cheneyspeak or Rovebyte.
The sad part is that this distracting ploy usually has some effect.
So we voters are not much better than they politicos.

Don't have a coronary on me Don Quixotic but I agree with you.
In context [bashing Bush] and with the word "us" spoken where it was written in the speech, the slam was clearly against Bush.
I share your frustration however in the fact that they all attempt to manipulate us and distract us from the real issues we face in the voting booth.
The ploy will only work if we let it. Let's hope most of us now understand the game and can see through it. But you are right, better yet, that game should not be played.

That might make sense if it weren't for the fact that Bush had better grades and a higher SAT score than Kerry, and that Bush has been more successful in life than Kerry. Politically, Bush has acheived the ultimate success as president, with only 42 others who have ever acheived this, whereas Kerry has acheived something that literally over a thousand other people have acheived, being a US Senator. In private life, Kerry is only successfull because he married rich women.
Too bad for y'all and Kerry that he's been insulting members of the armed forces for over 30 years. He was talking about service members when he made his demeaning comments and you and everybody else with a brain knows it. Democrats have been saying stuff like this for years. Charlie Rangle and Michael Moore, who was an honored guest at your convention have said similar things on several occasions. The military knows it too. That's why an amazingly large majority of them never vote for democrats.
