Shooting from (for?) a quiver

Jim Bob Duggar's clan rates a mention in this Newsweek article about the “quiverfull” movement, "a small but growing conservative Protestant group that eschews all forms of birth control and believes that family planning is exclusively God’s domain."

The term derives from Psalm 127:

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.

Back in 1995, when the quiverfull.com Web site was founded, it had only 12 subscribers; today, the site, which is administered by the Bortels, has more than 2,600. ...

Quiverfull beliefs are absolutist. Purists don’t permit even natural family planning methods, such as tracking fertility cycles (the only form of birth control condoned by the Roman Catholic Church). Also taboo: any form of artificial fertility treatment. “The point is to have a welcoming heart,” says Mary Pride, a mother of nine whose 1985 book, “The Way Home,” celebrated a return to traditional gender roles. It has sold about 80,000 copies and has inspired many quiverfull families. “You shouldn’t be unnatural in going to a fertility clinic or in trying to avoid having children by regulating when to have sex with your husband,” says Pride. ...

Some prominent quiverfull followers have recently helped raise the movement's profile. Among them: Jim Bob Duggar, a former Arkansas state representative, and his wife Michelle, who have 16 children and have been featured on several Discovery Channel documentaries.

I wonder at what age they will start marrying the girls off to clan members.

I have always felt sorry for those children when they reach puberty. Is there a teenager alive who would be caught dead in the same clothes their parents and little brothers and sisters are wearing? Being paraded around like they are must be embarrassing. Could they ALL end up like their parents? I'd like to witness the teen rebellion episodes on a reality TV show.

any suggestions?

Dueling Duggars!

Isn't the Bible great, you can find a passage justifying anything you want, my favorite is Proverbs 31-7 "Drink so that you might forget your sorrows and remember your poverty no more". 'scuse me whilst I practice my religion.... hey barkeep.

I find it suspicious that all these male interpretations of male written religious texts (i.e. Bible/Koran) manage to somehow subjugate women to mens sexual desires. Whether it's lots of women (young girls included) or just lots of sex, God's amazingly helpful in the penis department...not so much for the vagina.

Sexual harassment plain and simple.

Now there's a Proverb I'll drink to!

Not to play on the gender issue in another way but.... notice the female's hair style. Must be the work of the one armed beauty shop owner. [My apologies in advance to the profession and the ADA.]

Up here, we call them the Dog-litter Duggard, but that's become an insult to Beagles.

Janus-regarding that hairstyle. It's a wonder there is hair on the back of her head. I guess, If you stay on your back producing and delivering babies, your hair would be all over your head too. :)

Where did Prouster go? He said it best when he advised Mrs. Duggars to not treat her vagina like a clown car. I think maybe womb would be the better word, but isn't it fun to say and type vagina? VAGINA!

What's a quiver and can it ever be full?

Supposing it can be full, how many would be full?

Do these children have to come from their sperm?

Why don't they adopt some of the many orphans all
over the world?

Children are starving all over the world,
and dying of preventable diseases.
Instead of saving them, these nuts bring
more into the world and let the others die.

These people are nuts.

Nah DBI...vagina's better.

Okay, I'll admit it...aside from vagina/penis being the appropriate word choices most times, I do enjoy the occasional jab all those uptight, sexually repressed religious zealots who spend so much of their time and effort trying to control all of our penises and vaginas...as well as other body parts. But then I find humor in many strange places (most places actually).

The clown-car vagina still makes me laugh.

And how many children did Mary and
Joseph have? I don't recall Jesus
criticizing them for not have a litter.

"And how many children did Mary and
Joseph have?"

I think Mary was 14 when Jesus was born. So, Joseph (God?) was sexually active with a 13 year-old child? We have words in the modern age to fit such inappropiate activity....and jails.

Quiverfull? Sheesh...what was that line that Andrew "Dice" Clay used?

"There was an old lady
Who lived in a shoe
She had so many kids
Her uterus fell out..."

As has been said in earlier comments, there are millions of children growing up below the poverty line, riddled with disease and unlikely to get the education needed to get a leg up (pardon the pun Mrs. Jim Bob)...

I mean no disrespect to any Christians or other religious practitioners on this blog...but the Duggars and the Holts and the like make me want to puke...

I've got $10 down that says at least one of Duggar's children will marry one of Jim Holt's, thus joining the two scariest families in all of Arkansas in an unholy union.

I've got another side bet that says at least one of the 45 kids between the two families will turn out gay.

Geez, max. While I too, think they are nuts, why do you constantly pick on them? Good grief, they're harmless and have done nothing to you. Heck, they all carpool in one vehicle, recycle their clothes, and home school. I'm sure they're wacko, but I think the same of you...

ARK. BLOG: Would it make you feel good to know you're not the first person with that opinion? Me, I ain't got no quarrel with no Duggars, to paraphrase Ali. I actually think about them every Saturday morning, when I'm doing the laundry for two adults and wondering what the heck it must be like slaving away in the Duggar laundry room. It makes me tired just to think about it.

Jimmy Bob needs to keep his quiver in his pants.

Will someone please explain how many children the Duggers or any other family have is anybody's business but their own? They're not asking you to support them, or help raise them. Why is this your business? I find it odd that a newspaper that gets riled over conservatives who poke their nose in other people's sex lives has no problem doing the same.

I can't find any mention of the quiverfull movement's stance on breastfeeding. I can't understand how it can be wrong to prevent pregnancy but ok to nourish children artifically, especially since extended breastfeeding helps to naturally space children.

Even worse, Max, think about the poor woman and the home schooling tasks!

Wow!

"Will someone please explain how many children the Duggers or any other family have is anybody's business but their own?..."

The Duggers put themselves into the public eye...making their lives open to commentary (our business). Besides, just because it's their right, their business to have this many children doesn't make it any more palatable or healthy.

I feel sorry for the children raising children.

That family needs its own zip code.

You are right, Zelda. I watched and hour long program on DISCOVERY featuring the Duggars. They throw themselves in front of the public gaze....kinda like a politician, perhaps?

Thanks for the pointer, Jerry. Actually, those first verses of Prov 31 are worth considering in context, in light of other matters. Note the advice to rulers, for example, as well as the plea for the poor and destitute to be allowed their beer and wine (NIV):

1 The sayings of King Lemuel-an oracle his mother taught him:
2 "O my son, O son of my womb,
O son of my vows,

3 do not spend your strength on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.

4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel-
not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,

5 lest they drink and forget what the law decrees,
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.

6 Give beer to those who are perishing,
wine to those who are in anguish;

7 let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.

8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.

9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy."

I remember a concept from back in college psychology that the prof framed as "dumber by the dozen." The general idea is that each child in a family tends to be at least somewhat less intelligent than the one before him (I'm the baby of the family, too, so save your objections...I'm just repeating what I learned). The theory is that each child gets marginally less attention from the parents & other figures of influence and, therefore, does not as readily develop intellectually. If you accept the theory, that should mean that Duggar number 16 gives new meaning to the phrase "dumb as a rock."

We also need to remember the late 80s when the Rove-less Republicans were screaming about black welfare mother's with 16 kids and hollering crack babies! I can't find it but in the 1992 debate between George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton in a lull President Bush I suddenly hollered CRACK BABIES like someone jabbed him with a stick. Evidently he just remembered a talking point he was told to work in and blurted it out....it was priceless!

So....now a woman birthing 16 kids qualifies for sainthood, but 20 years ago the image was of a big fat black woman sucking off the government tit. My how things change.

The Duggars and Holts have made themselves fair game by running for office, sucking up free gifts, vans, houses, promoting their lifestyle on their own websites and the Discovery Channel. I don't hate them and I can't hurt them because they're surrounded by God's protective energy field. I'm just sorry for the fat black mother's of litters who don't get such sweet deals or have strong public defenders.

Just remember now and then to holler CRACK BABIES and honor old Bush 41. It appears he's back in charge of the White House, taking over for Junior, the only real crack baby I know.

"Will someone please explain how many children the Duggers or any other family have is anybody's business but their own?"

As a Christian I feel it's my business
when a family claims Christianity
teaches to have as many kids of your
own DNA as possible while orphans starve.

"They're not asking you to support them, or help raise them. Why is this your business?"

Really? Well how much do you want
bet that they take advantage to the
child tax credit? How many thousands
in taxes do they get to avoid paying?
Is there a limit to the child tax credit?
If you want to have kids then pay for
them. Don't ask the rest of us to subsidize
your decision to have children.

Q: What do you call couples who use the rhythm method for birth control?

A: Parents

Jim Bob's quiver is loaded and knows how to hit a welcoming target. We should not critize these people for liking lots of sex. Let er' rip!

I just thank Allah every time that masturbation don't make no babies....Jim Bob needs to learn to take matters in hand. ta dah, rim shot!

Thank you thank you I'm here till Saturday....

I'm with you Zelda on this:
"I feel sorry for the children raising children."

I would add I feel sorry for the children being RAISED by children. Think of all the phobias, neurotic problems and other issues the younger ones will have because they are being raised by immature older siblings that have no IDEA what they are doing and what the end result will be.

There is NO WAY the parents can do a good job with that many children. I have known large families like that and that is a common problem.

I wonder if Jim Bob understands the latest science on sexual orientation which has determined that the more previous brothers a boy has the greater probability he has of being gay. Who'd of thunk it -- Jim Bob supporting the "gay agenda"!!!!!

People, I grew up in Catholic schools and church and our 6 kids was about average. We had a couple families in double digits. The biggest had 14 kids and they ALL turned out fine. Nurses, doctors, lawyer, developer, investment adviser, and even a city board member.

We had a small 3 kid family who all ended up doctors but they were probably the most misfit of the families I grew up with.

I am not aware of any of the family's kids being in prison or otherwise a bad kid.

But when I got to Catholic High, we did have some only children that ended up in rehab and jail.

This is all anecdotal evidence but it looks like a trend. An intact family, however big, seems to be the best.

PS, at 47 I have no kids and only two of us six sibs had kids. I guess we had seen all the diapers we needed by early life.
