The book banners redux

Serendipitous timing. We told you Monday (and the columnist followed up with a column today) that Democrat-Gazette columnist Mike Masterson had married Laurie Taylor, the Fayetteville woman who led the charge against sex ed books and other books with content too explicit for her taste in the Fayetteville public schools. Their relationship apparently fired up when he began writing about the episode.

I urge anyone with an interest in the subject to click here, KUAR, for a long retrospective look back at the whole episode by Karen Tricot and the complicated process by which books are reviewed in the Fayetteville schools today. The Fayetteville librarian, branded a devil and worse by the book banners at the time, comes off as exactly what you'd expect, an old-school librarian who's very careful about her work. It's fine reporting. After all that hubbub, it appears that a very tiny number of parents express an interest in what their kids read. Most are content to trust the educators to select books that many kids might need to read, particularly if they are about unpleasant topics like incest which a child can't very well talk to an incestuous parent about,

I still can't believe Mike Masterson is getting married to someone other than the cold dead corpse of Janie Ward, which he has humped for a couple of years now in what has to be one of the longest running cases of journalistic necrophilia in Arkansas history. This guy is Nancy Grace with a word processor and more facial hair.

I love when the nutty right wingers start inbreeding. Makes the crazy gene pool even more shallow. Maybe Girl Arkansas can start a series of columns on when Ol Mike starting laying the pipe to the Book Banner and then when her husband left her. Don't be shocked if Mike worked as her PR person through his column while she's promoting family values and leaving her husband for this knuckle dragger who is obsessed with a poor dead girl.

What's the policy at the DOG on banging those you write about?

In general I believe people should be left alone. If 2 guys want to do the porpoise dance on their Seeley PosturePedic, as long as it's not in my house get after, don't forget the chains and the Cool Whip!

If someone drinks too much at home and shows up the next day looking like death...it's their business. If you want to handle snakes in your church service...be my guest, I won't be darkening the door anyway. Probably in 60% of all marriage couples someone has had an affair...that's their business.

But when 2 people who have thrust themselves into the public eye with their Me-Only chants of purity and book burning sanctimony break up a home and scatter the children, I think they ought to be tarred and feathered and run out of town!

Old Henry Hyde had schtupped a woman earlier in life and broke up her marriage, yet he waltzed his fat ass up and pointed his crooked old finger in Clinton's face.

His little stooge, the Godly A_s spent days near tears over the hole in Jesus' heart made by Bill Clinton when he was face-pronging Monica.

But at the same time A_s couldn't do his homework at night in the Watergate Apartment he shared with his brother, the Senator from Arkansas, who was banging the headboard till all hours with his paid staffer.

I could list about 25 others things off the top of my head that holier than thou types have been caught doing the last 10 years but I'll spare ya and go on to wondering if uptight Laurie Taylor is an ice queen in the sack? Does Mr. Masterson have sex for any reason other than procreation?

At one time Laurie Taylor Masterson was so damn handy with her press releases when she saw dirty books everywhere...why doesn't she crank out a press release and explain how dirty books and a sanctimonious windbag 20 years her senior broke up her marriage to Contractor Bob. Maybe her kids can be on the next Dinner with the Duggars show.

I look forward to the public roasting of the Mastersons because they have offended me to no end and they are a perfect example of what's wrong with this country today.

Laurie was acting on the orders of Ms Pelley, the superchristian nutcake from around Jonesboro. Pelley had urged her followers to send emails to the super of Fayetteville schools and pretend they were local people. Somewhere I still have one of her emails encouraging people to lie about who they were and their legal residence.

At the last large public meeting ( I was there) the board held on the matter
the wingnuts were outnumbered 10:1 and all the cheering squad Pelley had lined up was not allowed to speak unless they were Fayetteville residents. The clear consensus of the people who attended was to support the present library policy of making books available. Laurie was litterally humiliated out the school system. She withdrew her children from the Fay school system.
Laurie first listed 50 books to be reiviewed then increased the list to 175. Additionally Pelley instructed ,via email, how her followers could go online and read a review of the books without having examined any of the books in question then pretend they had read the books.
It was all a sham, likely for poltical purposes, but like the Coalition for Ark Future, the sham failed. That incident foreshadowed what was about to transpire in Ark electional politics.

Sickening. If either of them still has a job or a friend in Arkansas by tomorrow morning, I'm ashamed to live here. Well, it's not the first time, but this time I really mean it!

Oh, and nice report, Karen. Sorry I missed the broadcast. You do good work.

But thinking back, I don't remember a single male voice in the story. Men *do* read books. At least, I do. Do men have a different attitude about censorship?

To LWood who posted at 8:03 - would you produce that email please where I, Debbie Pelley, told someone to lie. I have never told anyone to lie in my life. So I am waiting! Are you psychologically projecting your nature onto me?

Whenever I hear someone criticize rightwingers and "wingnuts" for their name calling, irrational and unfounded statements and intolerance to other viewpoints, I appreciate this blog being an example I can offer to illustrate the left does it just as well.

Y'all choose the low road so often, I wonder why you haven't drowned yet.

Concerning Mike Masterson and Laurie Taylor. People should know what they are talking about before they accuse others. Maybe someone should look into Laurie Taylor husband's behavior and find out who he was sleeping with long before Mike Masterson came into Laurie Taylor's life. You might even want to check the police records for a call they made to her house when she was in physical danger shortly before the papers for divorce were filed. Get the truth before you start these rumors and ruin people's reputation. Besides since when did any of you guys have any concern for morality? Only when you think you can use it to beat up on the conservatives or Christians.

>>>Only when you think you can use it to beat up on the conservatives or Christians.<<<<<

That could be because these "conservatives or Christians" seem to have nothing better to do then stick their big fat noses in other folks beeswax.
Of course it is fun when they end up being just like us "ungodly" folks.

I'm popping popcorn for this one....

I have called twice for a full explanation of what happened to hubby, Contractor Billy. Now a little bit of info ekes out and thanks to Mr. Andersun. YAY!

This could actually work out well for all. After years of next to no sexual activity at home, Contractor Bob hooks up with a understanding cashier at Home Depot, willing to give his manly organ the kind of respect spoken of in the Bible. We have a match!

Now without all that sweaty pawing at home to distract her from her dirty book mission, "our lady of the low sex drive" is free to find nasty hiding behind every written word.

After she bans all the books written in English, it's on to Spanish, then German, on to Russian! 19 lifetimes of work ahead of her! Blessed be!

And like a religiously twisted When Harry Met Sally, in the middle of her crusade, while Contractor Tom is diddling the cashier with splinters in her fingers, just like his, Mrs. Taylor meets her aging white knight Mr. Masterson.

Talk about a perfect match! With an ass every bit as tight as hers, Mr. Masterson helps her with book banning strategy, gives her a shoulder to sob on, all the while wooing her away from her husband.

The magic here is not only 2 minds melding, but two low sex drives meeting head on. A man approaching 60 is no sweaty paw-er any more. He'll lose no sleep if the furnace only kicks on a few times a year. Another match!

By golly maybe God and Home Depot has a plan for us all! Good luck to the Taylor children....they're gonna need it.

"Get the truth before you start these rumors and ruin people's reputation. Besides since when did any of you guys have any concern for morality?"

My recollection, chrisandersum, is that this is precisely the point Masterson made over and over--and over and over--again in his op-ed pieces supporting Ms. Taylor's.

I don't have the columns in front of me now, but have a vivid recollection that they centered on the moral decline of our society--or a moral decline he maintains is there in our society.

And now this....People who live in glass houses....Or does heterosexual canoodling not count for moral decline, in Mr. Masterson's and Ms. Taylor's moral universe?

Hey, be careful what you write! There may be children reading this.
Besides, I have a low sex drive, too.

"...After years of next to no sexual activity at home, Contractor Bob hooks up with a understanding cashier at Home Depot, willing to give his manly organ the kind of respect spoken of in the Bible. We have a match!"

LOL...There's a biblical rationalization for everyone's particular vice. And, the current crop of 'evangelicals' are some of the best (though certainly not alone) twisters of reality.

My mother-in-law (as Southern Baptist as they come...the church doesn't breath without her presence), god bless her, is always spouting that Bible verse about a woman obeying her man...but she doesn't have an obedient bone in her body. We, of course, often point out how her words/actions are not exactly in line with her husband's wishes (the complete opposite and a true Christian who ALWAYS teaches by example rather than hypocritical lectures...oh yeah, he can't abide Bush). If it's a good day, she'll smile...A LITTLE. More times than not her sentences, as does her life, start with a 'But...' An entirely different set of forgiveness standards are applied to 'good people' (translation: church goers just like her...or her PERFECT children). The rest of us, well, It's the devil, or liquor or dope or whatever the recent church memo said. So, if Bob Hooks is the right color of religion and if his penis has been denied proper biblical respect... his dalliance with the hot cashier is fine and dandy. The rest of us are just adulterers who'll be smote down...or something like that.

What is truly disturbing about this situation is that Mike Masterson was writing columns in a statewide paper attacking an outstanding library media specialist while he had a thing on the side with the person he was putting forth for sainthood. Several people from the Fayetteville area told me this was going on during the book banning debacle, but frankly I couldn't believe that someone could be so stupid. I hope that he has the sense, although I doubt it, to stop writing about family or any other type values.

I recently had a discussion with a person who is a teacher in NWA and was threatened with a lawsuit for reading a book in class. Fortunately her bosses were supportive and this will not be a long term problem. The teacher will continue reading the book in the future. The whole event was very stressful and disruptive for staff as well as students for quite some time.

Although we didn't discuss incest at the time. Wouldn't incest (among so many other topics) need to be discussed with youngsters the most if any serious notion of stopping it is to be taken seriously?

In all fairness, Laurie's husband was cheating on her (with someone fairly well-known in NW AR) and she and Mike didn't start dating for quite a while after her separation from her husband. And she attempted to fix her marriage, but her husband wasn't willing to fix things. (ie: end the extramarital affair)...as a married woman, I wouldn't be able to stay in a marriage like that either.

Having said that, I don't agree with her religiously or politically.

Having just had the chance to read Masterson's column from yesterday, my first thought it that If Rascal Flats knew how there song was being used to justify MM & LT's behavior they would be appalled. I can't believe they filled a church for this travisty. They should have at least had the good taste to take their show to Vegas because what happens there stays there, not in our daily paper. Her Navy training disappoints me even more knowing that she would be willing to fight for our freedoms, but only on her terms. The woman tried to take away the rights of others to determine the reading materials students have access to and other parents' rights to allow their children to read what they deem fit based on her narrow view of the world. Since when did a husband having affair become justification for this type of behavior? At the very least, Masterson should have disclosed his relationship with LT to the readers of his drivel. This goes way beyond the bounds of integerity and decency that MM & LT seem to think they possess. Even though I usually don't agree with the Dem's editorial stances, I am very disappointed that someone from the paper hasn't spoken up and apoligized to the readers for his columns written during this time which were under the influence of the "right eye with the unique gold flare."
