President's stepfather dies

UPDATE TO EARLIER: We just got word that Dick Kelley of Hot Springs, Bill Clinton's stepfather, died today. He'd been released from the hospital after a long illness this week for hospice care. He was 91. Funeral is Saturday, but we have no details yet.

Clinton had a last visit with Kelley Monday. The Washington Post reported earlier today that Sen. Hillary Clinton had cancelled a presidential campaign visit to New Hampshire because of Kelley's "grave" condition. The Clinton family had a close relationship with Kelley, widower of Clinton's mother Virginia. The retired businessman was a familiar sight on all Clinton's visits back home to Arkansas, as well as a frequent White House visitor during the Clinton years. A nice guy with a perpetual smile.

AP has a full obit here.  Bad link fixed. Sorry folks.

I'm not trying to be rude, but could you have at least left a respectful word about Dick Kelley before you linked to your scoop. I am sad to hear of both of these losses. Rest in peace Dick.

ARK. BLOG: Linked to what? We announced his death and, because it was a rewrite of an earlier item about his illness, I marked it with an UPDATE so it wouldn't be read over.

UPDATE: Oh, I see. I think you were referring to a reader comment. Sorry.

Good point holy, and thank you. I posted my comment on Molly before the post was changed to reflect Dick's passing.

I met Dick once years ago and he was indeed a Prince of a fellow.

Call me clueless, but I have no idea what this person is complaining about. Seems like a perfectly normal announcement to me.

Okay, now I join the "now I see" crowd. Holy was fussing at poor old Lwood.

So, all things considered, it's holycow who's completely screwed up what should have been a respectful remembrance of Mr. Kelly.

Sorry about the confusion and for taking the focus away from where it should be. Lwood- sorry for being snippy- I can be oversensitive sometimes.

I think we can all agree that a kind soul and a brilliant journalist will be missed.

I never met Dick Kelley, but send condolences to President and Mrs. Clinton.

Molly Ivins only recently became one of my favorite columnists. I wish I would have discovered her earlier. She could stick it to Bush as well as Colbert does. A great writer, and, for my money, a great American.
(Stick THAT Sean Hannity)

Peace, stasis, blessings and may fond memories prevail. I will truly miss my anxious Sunday mornings when I always looked forward to two things;
Opus and reading Molly Ivins' column.

I know Bill will reflecting upon the life of
Dick Kelley whom I understand had enough stamina left to be parade marshall at Hot Sprgs last Christmas parade.
RIP to a couple of outstanding people.

RIP and Godspeed, Mr. Kelley. Step-parenting is a bugger, you did a helluva job! Prayers to your family, and to that of Ms. Ivins.

I am so sad for Bill and Hillary. They loved him.

When I click to read the obit for Dick Kelley, I am linked to an article about Webb Hubbell selling life insurance for marijuana smokers. Where is Dick's obit?

Here's the link to Dick Kelley's obit in the Washington Post--hopefully it will work if you paste it in your browser window. I had to sign in on the WP website to get to it so it may not. It's free registration and the story has a headline on the main WP web page it you can't use the link.

We lose Molly Ivins, but stil have to put up with "Shrub." There is no justice.

I note President Clinton' comment ". . . former President Clinton described Ivins as someone who was "good when she praised me and who was painfully good when she criticized me. . . ."

My sympathies for all of us for the loss of Molly and condolences for President and Senator the Clintons on the lost of President Clinton's stepfather.

We can hope that Molly is regaling Dick Kelley right now with her wit and anecdotes and Dick is filling her in on what Bill was really like growing up.

No justice is right, doc.

Rest in peace, Mr. Kelley and Ms. Ivins.

What a misunderstood beginning to this thread. I'm glad it's all straight and everyone is (are) friends again.

RIP Mr. Kelley, I never met him, but I assume he was a good man who helped Bill stay on course and get to the top rung of the ladder.

Perhaps it is a bit rude on this thread, but there is no other thread to discuss the passing of Molly Ivins. Mr. Kelley was 91, Ms Ivins was 62.

While I'm sure we could have used Mr. Kelley's help, losing Molly is a giant blow as the storm builds in DC over the criminality, the corruption, the failures and the treasonable acts of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

As the national voice most familiar with the man she called Shrub, her insight into the ways and methods of her "fellow Texans" Bush & Cheney would have been priceless in the heat of the battle to save our country from the fascist in control these last 6 years of misery.

I hope after Bill Clinton buries his step-father he too will join the fight to bring the Bush administration to justice. The best way to help his wife's presidential campaign is by rolling up his sleeves and fighting the current evil who are in DC.

I've very sorry that Mr. Kelley and Ms Ivins will not be alive to see the restoration of our country in the months ahead.

My condolences to the Clintons.

DBI - I could'nt agree with your kind request any more. Maybe ol' illusive Billikin Man will provide a post like only the B-man can, in honor of dear Molly.
fyi - firedoglake had a good post and thread with a lot of wonderful links of Mollys as well.
OK....I have played Van Morrisons (on vinyl) Snow in San Anselmo about five times today and it's still a great song. We have about 4" so far with more expected tomorrow. For now a cold sled ride in the moonlight keeps me young.

My condolences to the Clintons.

omg triplicate! I was getting server error messages. Sorry about that.

E.S. hits a triple!

Next time try to knock it outta the park.

I find this to be one of the most positive and inspiring things out of DBI's pen:

"I'm very sorry that Mr. Kelley and Ms Ivins will not be alive to see the restoration of our country in the months ahead."

According to a message Mr. Kelly's son-in-law sent to friends last night, President Clinton and other family members were at Dick's side when he passed.
