A Hogstoric moment
Friday is the day. If not Friday, Saturday.
In short: Big doings are afoot in Fayetteville.
There's a reason for the special University of Arkansas Board of Trustees meeting in Fayetteville Saturday morning and it's not because an emergency attaches to a handful of property transactions.
The executive session slotted on the agenda is not listed as a matter of routine. Here's the deal:
There is now a growing consensus -- among administration, major donors, Board of Trustees -- that it is time for Frank Broyles, 82, to retire as athletic director at the University of Arkansas.
In recognition for his meritorious service, it is hoped that Broyles will choose to exit in a way most favorable to him. By Friday, he must announce that he is retiring by the end of 2007, when he will have served a full 50 years at the University of Arkansas. He'd then move into a university role, likely at his current pay level, such as goodwill ambassador or fund-raiser. A proper search for a successor could be conducted while Broyles continues to serve out his time as a functioning athletic director. (No, Houston Nutt is NOT a candidate for the job.)
If Broyles does not make an announcement by Friday -- and he's been unavailable -- the situation could be less pleasant. A majority of the board is prepared to remove Broyles as athletic director and speak after the executive session about the reasons.
Board members prefer, of course, that Broyles retire peacefully. It is one thing to vow to remove Broyles, another to vote in public against a man who won national championships at the university and built athletic facilities that are the envy of much larger universities, no matter what his misjudgments of late may have been.
A previous run was made at Broyles' job, by Chancellor John White and then-Board Chairman William Clark, partially as fallout from Broyles' spurning of the Stephens-family-led desire to expand Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium in favor of more emphasis on games in Northwest Arkansas. Broyles' political skills rose to the fore then.
But a key difference exists today. Broyles has lost important support in the powerful financial community in Northwest Arkansas because of the situation surrounding the Springdale football coach Gus Malzahn and star members of the Springdale High football team, belatedly brought into the Hog fold after a championship season. After an uneasy year with football coach Houston Nutt, Malzahn and most of the Springdale players, including heralded quarterback Mitch Mustain, departed. Nutt and the Springdale group never got along and the story refuses to die. The latest disclosure was a report in the Democrat-Gazette that indicated Nutt's wife had helped circulate an ugly e-mail sent to Mustain by a friend of the Nutt family who enjoyed sideline privileges at Hog football games. Malzahn had many friends and admirers and the polarized camps have also reportedly prompted ugly remarks about Springdale from members of the Hog athletic hierarchy. This has not helped Broyles. He also hurt rather than helped the situation by a meeting he held during the football season with some of the Springdale players and their families. And he also failed to quell coach Nutt's antipathy toward the Springdale group, a problem that soon festered and dominates fan talk to this day. The impact of instant chatter from multiple sources on the Internet has been an important player in the developments. University officials have received a torrent of comment, little of it good, about problems on campus. Some has come from important donors.
Some expect Broyles to try to buy time, to seek an extension from the Board and to attempt to put his political survival skills to work again. Some Board members are impatient, however. They believe it's time for a change. (At least some believe those changes could eventually extend down the ladder to coaching positions, once there's a new athletic director in place. Nutt, despite a successful season, has been damaged by the controversy with the Springdale players and the latest publicity over the e-mail is likely to become recruiting fodder. Basketball coach Stan Heath, who's having a disappointing season, is also in peril.)
Multiple sources contributed to this account. It doesn't mean that the situation isn't fluid and won't change before Saturday morning.

I just wrote a long winded post which ended with something like "I doubt the two bozos at the tpp have anything to worry about"
Where is the dayum delete button on here!!!!
I been undercut by my own slow-typing abilities....sheesh.
I hope the above article is all true.
It is way past time for major changes. WAY!
Hide Wally....a lot of rednecks are gonna blame you....
Not this one.
Odd how folks can't see past the hype some of these people at the top put out. The parallels between this and the current US admin's ability to overstay it's welcome are skeery.

Jim Lindsey? Is that who we can expect as the AD?
I would like to take this opportunity to annouce that I am, in fact, willing to discuss terms for that position, but I will have to be in charge of everything and heads will roll. well the first part of that sounds like frank, but if I were the AD, there would be some big changes on the hill by the end of my first day.
I hope Broyles retires with the class we expect from him. Im not even a Hog football fan any more because of all the carryings-on that started a long time ago, but I was a rabid little fan as a kid and I'd like to see coach broyles go out in style.
and im still open for negotiations about the job. ;) At this point, I think they could do worse, dont you?
I wonder if the signs that the Aporkalypse is truly upon us mean that we all have to go to the grocery store and fight over the last loaf of bread and gallon of milk, especially when you consider the few flakes of snow out there???????

Let's see....um....retirement gifts are in store (possibly). Wal-Mart gift cards, a lifetime subscription to Sports Illustrated, new Hummer golf cart, tickets to the next Cotton Bowl, a watch with HDN's picture on the face, or a gold-plated jockstrap?
Decisions, decisions. Dang! Any more ideas out there?

I think Jennings Osbourne should buy him a new wardrobe, at least.
Now comes the part where they crush the hard drives at the AD's office.

Could it be any more ironic. After years of running of coaches he wins the great stadium debate by siding with the NWA group rather than his old base in LR and is then shown the door himself for not taking care of the new NWA base. Sounds like his political skills may have waned a touch. There is no friend like an old friend, Frank.

The sad thing about all of this is that Frank has been great for the UofA. It's a shame he didn't retire after the end of the regular season before all of this crap started with Malzan and Mustain. If he retires now or is forced out it will be on a down note. But, I like most people think it is time for a change. It's just to bad it has to happen like this.

>>>He'd then move into a university role, likely at his current pay level, such as goodwill ambassador or fund-raiser.<<<
Dude, we have to keep paying him?
Can't he just retire and live off his state pension and SS like most state employees?
How about doing that fund rasing work for free for the love of ole' U of A and saving the tax payers money?

It's about time this happened. When you allow someone to become more powerful than the university itself you have a problem. On top of all the controversy that has happened over the last few years, Frank wants to get Houston a raise? Is that a raise for all the problems, the disappointing seasons and the horrible recruiting classes? Arkansas is 9th in the SEC in recruiting.. what more can you say?
I'm sooooooooo happy about this change you will not know. If it was my birthday I would not be any happier.
Next step, Houston OUT! Get rid of Houston and get a real coach in here. We don't' need the good ole boy system anymore. Bring in a another coach that can bring the spark that Malzahn did last year. I've already had my fill of run, run, pass punt. This is the SEC, this isn't not Murray State or Boise St, where you never had much of a record anyhow.
Thank You! This is the first good thing the University of Arkansas has done in a number of years.
Frank, you did it to yourself. When you spend 50 years doing things, you stop thinking outside of the box, and you stopped that about 15 year ago I am afraid.

It just hit me about Greenberg's naming bill. Did he know something? The whole damn campus will be Broyles this or Broyles that, and Washington County Courthouse becomes Broyles Complex for county rules and taxes...etc..College Ave renamed..no end in sight.

Question for anyone:
Does Butch Davis really have a stip in his UNC contract that allows him to leave ONLY for UA?
This is just something I heard...may not be true...

I agree with tina that hopefully, if all of this is true, Frank will bow out gracefully.
In all fairness, Frank has done more the University of Arkansas Athletics than he had to. You take the good with the bad, understandably, and do the best you can.
That said, it is time for Frank to ease up and relax a little. Change is inevitable with any University and our time is now.
Please Butch Davis, if you are reading this...come on over!

I will take the job for half of Frank's salary and donate that amount to one of the schools at the University. Notice I am talking about education not quasi-gladiator matches in some big house that Walton built.
I don't follow sports so I would put the money into physical education which would be beneficial to every student's life long good health. If we still want to keep the masses in check I would occassionally turn a lion loose with one of the former coaches in a confined stadium for the testosterone pleasure of the paying public.

So will the new AD have looking over his shoulder both the major donors AND Broyles? Is there any doubt that when Broyles is being paid to stump, he will sling barbs at the new AD - - after all, has there been one gracious, conciliatory remark from him about a coach and three student-athletes who unfortunately cast their with the football program? If the Trustees think that he really cares what they think, or how he represents the UofA, they need to be reminded that it was Broyles who PROVED - - who ADMITTED - - that bringing in the Springdale group was for show because, he said, he was familiar with their offense and it wouldn't work in the SEC, which of course didn't stop him and HDN from wasting UofA money, scholarships, a coaching position, and more good will than UofA true supporters will ever know. So the Trustees think he'll be the good soldier when nudged out because he'll be on the payroll? Wasn't he even caught lying about something as petty as whether the parents' meeting had been scheduled in advance - - and you're saying that with all this, the Trustees plan to validate the lack of integrity, ethics and morals of the Mustain stain that he and HDN created by keeping him on?

2007 has been a remarkably good year for "clean slates" so far, judging by what has happened in Little Rock.
So why not go 'whole hog' (pardon the pun) and try the same thing in F-ville?
It is time!

I agree with Rosso; frank has done more for the uofa program than we will probably ever know. But, it's time. it is time for him to go.
can't the board of trustees fire stan heath if they see fit, or anybody else, without the AD's approval? I honestly do not know. is that the way the system is supposed to wrok, or is that the way the system works with Frank in charge???
obviously one of our bloggers has been into the muscadine wine. Janus wants to put money into education up there in Fateville!!!!!!! what are you, danny ford??? You best get your priorities straight and fast. I declare. im going to be generous and assume the winter weather caused temporary insanity when you posted that. Putting education ahead of sports. who ever heard of that??

It's finally time they get rid of broyles...he's a jerk as far as I'm concerned and always tried to run the Hogs like he owned the team. He's like having Hitler running your school's athletic department. I know a lot of people that will party when he's gone.

It's amazing, isn't it? That Gus Malzahn, high school coach, brought down the legendary J. Frank Broyles. Here's how:
Broyles, in 2004 and 2005, sees his creation going to hell. He sees Malzahn and his kids as potential saviors. He assumes and rightfully so, the following:
1. That, to save Houston's job and the program, he needs Malzahn and his players to come to the U of A. If not, the natives will scream that we can't keep the kids that are close by.
2. That no one in their right mind would think that we could fully implement Malzahn's rat ball offense due to the type of talent that we have at the U of A....
3. By doing 1 and 2, he will have bought the team a couple of years of goodwill until we get Malzahn's type of athlete, then, by that time everyone will realize that a pure version of Malzahn's offense would not work in the SEC, we'd run a modified version of it and win 8-10 games a year for the next 10.
4. That no one would bitch too loudly because, after all, Malzahn is only a high-school coach and surely the duped parents will stay at home and not say a word.
He badly miscalculated the following:
1. He undersestimated the deificiation of Malzahn, et al. and its effect on the people in NWA who believe the earth was created in 7 days,
2. He underestimated the passion of HOG fans who believe all our problems are cured if we pass the ball 35 times a game,
3. He underestimated the bitterness of Mitch's mom and did not recognize the chip on her shoulder the size of Texas;
4. He underestimated the ego of Malzahn to ever so slightly vary from his rat-ball offense;
5. He underestimated the near christ-like focus and determination Malzhan has with his offense. Remember, this is the guy who, as a high-school coach, wrote a book so others can learn from him and allowed a newspaper reporter to chronicle his teams championship season. Why people buy either book is beyond me. Memo to Gus: Football existed before you came here and it will exist when you depart.
6. He underestimated his football coach and his near "huckabee" like thin skin.
Broyles tried to save this program with his moves, but everyone's ego but his got in the way. It's good to see Frank stepping down, but not like this.

Frank has done his job well but this is a new era for the Razorback Basketball and Football programs mainly. Frank does need to get more r&r and enjoy the games. He has and will be a good fund raiser or ambassador. Now we need the new AD to squeeze Nutt to either move on or improve his staff (offensive coordinator get Malzhan back, special teams and recruiting personnel). Get Mitch to stay and this kid will work extra hard to lead us to a Championship along with the Dick brothers. I think Casey, Mitch and Nathan could become good friends and shred some defenses in the SEC under new leadership or Gus.
I would like to see Jimmy Johnson paid to lead us to the next National Title. I would even like to see him as the new AD. Go Hogs!!!!

Jimmy will have top recruits lined up in droves to "Get-ur-done". Come on Jimmy give us three years of your abilities to put the staff and players in place to win a Title game. As Nutt said its "Here and Now".

Dang and I thought he said, Beer, and now!!!"
Jimmy Johnson at UofA is a pipe dream. The boy is a big time media star, loves his Florida lifestyle, and has shown little or nothing toward the fortune of the Hawgs over the long years.
You had better get the A.D. first. He'll be the key to who will follow in the other jobs. As for the coach, if you can get Steve Spurrier, or someone like him, that would be verra verra nice. You know whut I mean, chili bean?!

So what if...... Lee becomes head coach and Nutt moves to AD or is gone? Perhaps Nutt will move to Tulsa and Malzahn will return to U of A as Offensive Coach. Is Reggie Herring gone? If so, who will take over the defensive coach position? The only strength we have had in the last few years is the defense because the offense seems in constant flux.

Forget getting a gigantic name coach - they already make twice what Nutt does. It will be some "up and comer" if they make a change - much like the Heath hire but hopefully better results.
Mustain stay at UA now? Are you kidding me! The poor kid better consider the witness protection program now. I feel sorry for him really. He's handled things pretty well for someone his age other than his stupid comments for a book. Who in their right mind would allow high school kids to be put in a potentially bad situation like that? Good decision, Gus.
Mitch needs to go far, far away from Arkansas to play. It took quite a few years for people to forgive Keith Jackson for leaving and all he did was go to school out of state.
Over time, if Mustain is a big star he will be welcomed back too. If he turns out to be a hat with no cattle, so to speak, he will still be quite a footnote in Arkansas sports history.
I wish all of them well, but don't expect to see Gus or Mitch back in the Arkansas athletic facilities.
