FLASH: UA Board appointment -- UPDATE
Gov. Mike Beebe has named Tyson Foods honcho John Tyson to the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas. He fills the seat vacated by the conclusion of the term of Charles Scharlau.
Nobody would ever suggest that the Board ever utters a peep about athletic matters at UAF. But if they did, I think it safe to say this would be an appointment that won't send the football coach racing into the stands to lead the band in a few stanzas of the fight song.
Tyson lives in Springdale, not exactly a hotbed of Houston Nutt support, in case you missed my original point.
PS -- Since it's sure to arise, I can tell you that our Jim Harris has a copy of Butch Davis' contract at UNC. No, it does not contain a release should the Arkansas job become available. He can buy his way out, however. For a couple of million.
UPDATE: Brummett has written a sharp column on this development, complete with a rather pregnant statement from Archie Schaffer at Tyson, about the new man on the UA Board. It has been posted early at the Morning News website.
Archie Schaffer, Tyson’s PR man, read for me a statement in which Tyson said he looked forward to helping lead the UA’s Fayetteville campus to the next level in both academics and athletics and to effecting whatever changes might be necessary toward that end.
Seldom have I encountered a more loaded short statement. Concern yourself with only two words. Those were “athletics” and “changes.”
John Tyson reportedly hasn’t any use for Houston Nutt, the football coach of the Razorbacks, and believes replacing him to be essential toward reaching that higher level to which he referred. He thought as much even before Nutt got crossways with all of Springdale over the Malzahn/Mustain debacle.

Nutt Nation
With the appointment of John Tyson, Springdale, to the UA Board, perhaps he will be the one that can get Nutt to resign. Especially after the upcoming season that has a schedule filled with teams that even "drive time sports" could defeat. Being from Springdale, I am sure that he will get much pressure to fire Nutt :-)...

I'm convinced Nutt takes the best job that's vacant after next season instead of waiting around to be fired after the next season he doesn't win 9 or 10 games.

They just named him to the board to get free chicken. Frank B., love him a big plate of southern fried chicken ya know. Sometimes you feel like a Nutt, sometimes you don't.....

It wouldn't be difficult at all to get a couple of million for the buyout of Davis' contract. But Nutt isn't going anywhere. With the cupcake schedule next season he'll get another 10 wins...
Now that Frank is a lame duck, it's time to get rid of Jim Lindsey...king jerk-o...

These type of shennanigans are exactly why Auburn almost lost accreditation for the entire school a few years ago.

"Tyson lives in Springdale, not exactly a hotbed of Houston Nutt support,.."
Johnny sorta lives in any one of several places; his townhouse on Dickson St, or a retreat in Madison county, or in Springdale or Beaver Lake. It's difficult to say John Tyson is a resident of any one town. I'm sure he gets mail at corporate offices in Springdale.

"John Tyson reportedly hasn't any use for Houston Nutt"--Brummett
John Tyson is smarter than I thought.

The illustrative John Brummett penned a spoof recently about the similarities of Dubya and Houston Nutt. I could easily sketch a similar parody about Nutt and Hillary Clinton, except mine would be much closer to reality.
In the cases of both Clinton and Nutt, wild-eyed extremists who perceive they've been slighted or wronged in some way (if the shoe fits, wear it) are taking part in malicious smear machines being run as a means to achieve the desired end, the ouster of the perceived evildoers.
The well-oiled machines work like this: Unfounded, imaginary, or wildly exaggerated tales first appear somewhere like the Drudge Report (in Clinton's case) or (in the case of Nutt) one of the mean-spirited, ignorance laced, anonymous message boards overrun by the Nutt/Broyles haters.
The outrageous charges against Clinton are amplified by Rupert Murdoch's New York Post, Rush Limbaugh, and the usual suspects. Meanwhile, back in the Razorback nation, Nutt is a growing target of vicious gossips who by now have taken to radio talk shows (and "shows" they are) to amplify their conjecture, half-truths, or outright lies.
Fearful of being out scooped on a brewing Clinton story, ABC News and CNN eventually dignify the smear on their newscasts, often throwing in a "reportedly" or "allegedly" to ease the journalistic consciences of reporters who have absolutely no idea if the allegations are true, half-true, or sheer fiction.
Similarly, in Nutt's case, formerly fair, balanced, and knowledgeable sportswriters and network affiliate sportscasters don't want to be left behind, and can't pass up the opportunity to boost their reader and viewer ratings, so rush to their keyboards and microphones with their allegedlys and reportedlys.
Ultimately, (if I may narrow this down to Nutt) the whole smelly smear becomes fodder for columns, editorials, and mama blogs, not only in our small wonderful state, but also throughout the nation (see ESPN, Sports Illustrated).
All of this silliness and ignorance is put into print and blasted over the airwaves without ever having passed the who, what, when, where, and why standards. What in God's name has happened to responsible journalism? And why does the more rationale majority sit on its hands in silence?
Next thing we know, we'll have a Ken Starr brought in to investigate (replete with leaks) anything and everything Razorback. To the dismay of the hell raisers and the lynch mobs, the investigation will likely unearth much less on Nutt than was ever found on Billy Blythe. Which, except for the devil with her blue dress on, equates to zero. But the damage has been done.
Houston Nutt and other targets of this overthrow effort are human beings and not without shortcomings, whatever they may be. But the hate campaign occurring in Arkansas right now goes far beyond dissatisfaction and criticism of coaches and the university's athletic program. It has plummeted to a disgraceful, almost total dissolution of human decency.
ARK. BLOG: I don't agree entirely, but that's a heckuva post. Salute!

Yeah, yeah, you know my biases, but I have to ask: at one time, weren't academic subjects taught at UAF? It would be nice if one or two board members had their fingers on the academic pulse. And how about the rest of the university system? Too much to ask for?

This is what happened at Auburn:

Note:
"Make sure its board of trustees isn't controlled by a minority of members or an outside force.
Demonstrate that the president has ultimate control over the school's athletic program.
Demonstrate that the president has ultimate control over athletic spending. "
Sound familiar?

Let's see......The only reason you have big job is because of Daddy, you are ousted as CEO because of big losses and drops in share prices, and no reason to mention long years of drug abuse and rehab visits. And you don't even graduate from Ark; you go to SMU. All it takes in Ark to succeed is a last name.

Seems to me that anyone on the BOT of my (and the state's) university system should be at least a graduate of one of the universities in the system. That just seems logical.
Hell, he didn't even graduate in Arkansas. He has no right to be there.
And I don't like Nutt much, either.
