Hurler stilled
ZOO NEWS RELEASE
The Little Rock Zoo is sad to report the loss of one of its most colorful characters, Richard, a chimpanzee living at the Zoo since 1988.
Richard was the alpha male of the Zoo's chimpanzee group. As the alpha, Richard was quick to defend his family and territory by throwing food, mud, and anything else he could get his hand on. "He would wind-up that arm and toss something right at you," said Zoo director Mike Blakely. "Richard was a favorite of our staff and visitors. His loss will be felt for a long time."
Richard died this morning while undergoing a medical examination by Dr. Marilynn Baeyens. A few days ago, great ape keepers noticed Richard was very quiet and was not as active. Dr. Baeyens anesthetized Richard and was performing an X-ray of his chest when the chimp suddenly stopped breathing. Dr. Baeyens, assisted by Zoo staff, administered an immobilization reversal to Richard and tried to revive him. Richard was pronounced dead after Dr. Baeyens and Zoo staff worked for more than an hour to revive him.
Dr. Baeyens says X-rays of Richard's chest show an enlarged heart more than three times the normal size for a male chimpanzee. Richard was taken today to the state lab for a necropsy. Preliminary results of the necropsy are expected in the next few days.
Richard was acquired by the Little Rock Zoo from the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Ind. in 1988. He is estimated to be around 32-years-old. Richard was wild caught and records of his birth date do not exist.

why do we keep steadily reading about animals dying at the LR Zoo? It seems that there are more animal deaths than what would be expected.

There's no more deaths here than would be expected. Richard was old and many of the animals that die at the zoo are old. Death is just a fact of life and animals suffer from illness and ailments just like we do.

I dated a girl I should have called Hurler...and let that be a lesson to the young of Arkansas.
Having encountered a hurling chimp at the old alligator farm in Hot Springs in the late 70s, I know a cover up when I read it. What they're not saying is that Richard hurled shit at people. I have keys, lighters, ball-point pens and pocket change to hurl at people, but unless Richard wore a suit, you know what he had the most of to hurl.
And maybe Richard had the right idea. If spectators at the Libby trial would haul off and throw their shit at the bad guys, maybe the next administration wouldn't be so so so bad. If people would toss turds at Robert Novak, maybe he'd straighten up.
Then think about Bush and Cheney....lobbing loaves at them everyday might sink in the fact that 63% of the American people don't like Bush's war for oil.
Instead of spraying Crushabee with questions about Anna Nicole's death if he was power pooped on national TV he might come clean about what was on the crushed hard drives at the state police hanger.
By golly I think this poor dead ape has taught us a new way to fight political corruption! Feces Flinging may be the only way to get our country back! Pooh Propelling might get us out of Iraq. Dung Dropping might change Senator Pryor's ideas on torture.
Like my Mama always said, Out of the butts of apes....Thanks to Richard we have a new movement....and I do mean movement, the deployment of which we may once again mean we live free and have a bright and prosperous future! RIP Hurler, what a movement your movements have started!

Don't know if this is the same chimp I saw throw a rock at a zoo employee one fine summer day. If the rock hadn't hit a metal pipe beside the walkway, someone could have died.

Lord, God. When I saw the headline, "Hurler stilled," my heart almost stopped. I thought Wally had died or been fired. Y'all need to be more careful with your headlines.

BBI, Funny S**T. Pun Intended.
It does bring to mind a pretty picture, imagine the Chimp being the object of multi-hurlers.
And by Chimp, I'm not talking about Richard, I'm talking about George.

When I was a kid (I grew up in St. Louis) there was one gorlla that would throw shit at people. It was a hoot to go see what would fly out of the cage at the unsuspecting.

As someone who was searching to read more news on the loss of a dear friend, I was appalled to discover that this matter has become a joke to some people. Those that cared for Richard were very knowledgeable on how to maintain his health. It is a shame that someone would blame those that cared the most for Richard for his death. When we take great apes out of their natural habitat and place them in captivity, they succumb to many tragedies. They are restricted to a habitat much smaller than their home range in the wild and this unfortunately leads to problems such as heart conditions that we, as humans, have also become familiar with as we have become more sedentary. These animals are very sensitive to sedation but it is the only way to examine them to discover what is causing their illness. If you want to point a finger at someone, point it at people like yourself (I'm assuming) that threw things, screamed, and laughed at Richard while he was living a life to entertain and educate you about his species which, because of humans, has nearly been wiped off the planet.
