PBS president addresses bias, new media

Paula Kerger, the president and CEO of the Public Broadcasting Service, visited AETN's headquarters in Conway yesterday.

We asked her about the charges of liberal bias often leveled against PBS, as well as what she thinks about the future of public broadcasting as new forms of broadcast media (like this one) proliferate.

See the video interview at the Arkansas Times video blog.

UPDATE: The full interview is now available on the video blog, in three parts.

This is quite a coup for Warwick, to catch this woman in Conway. I have to wonder from the look on her face at times, if Warwick wears a Darth Vader costume when he tapes the interview. Or is the camera shaped like an AK-47? Most of the people he catches have real looks of fear in their eyes.

Though it's hard to trust anyone these days, one thing I know is Ms Kerger is a vast improvement over her predecessor Kenneth Tomlinson, who was a puppet for rightwing nuts and the Bush administration. It's just too bad Warwick never got the chance to push his camera in Tomlinson's rat face.

I think that Ms Kerger was willing to take a few minutes with Warwick is a good sign of good things to come from her. Just remember the Bush administration is still working on removing funding from PBS and NPR.

PS, On a technical note, I noticed every time the moving ad that starts out, Your Search is Over changed it stopped the video and caused missed words.

Maybe it would be better if the pages with Warwick's videos didn't contain ads that changed or had animation. It's not horrible, just something I noticed. If all ads behaved like that cute Mrs. Carroll's it would be a better world.

We asked her about the charges of liberal bias often leveled against PBS

--------------------

That question is not only dated it is in and of itself based on a false premise of the right wing machine. Are we still at this point? Why not ask about who is charging liberal bias and what exactly a liberal bias is before swallowing that pill?
Best summary I have heard is Colberts - Truth is a known liberal bias. Now what is wrong with that and why would NPR consider persuit of truth anything other than the highest standard?

Look into the appointments to the CPB by Bushco especially Rove. Look at what NPR people are saying as permanent members of the Fox news lineup (Williams and Liason sp?). Finaly look at who are frequent guests on NPR now constantly talking fascist right wing points with no questioning of their assertions as to where the facts are....

DBI -
Mrs Kerger may be an improvement, time will tell.
Tomlinson, iirc, was head of the CPB installed by Rove.

One example from media matters

NPR presented vice president of conservative think tank as sole expert on Democrats' appeal to religious voters

Sorry I am on dial up so I am not able to watch the video...

Most of these comments are confusing PBS with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) CPB is the government originated and nominated board that Tomlinson was on - and now David Pryor is on. PBS is a membership organization aggregating resouces and programs and is not a part of CPB.. Paual Kerger replaced Pat Mitchell at PBS. She is from WNET in New York and had no relationship with the regrettable Ken Tomlinson. Tomlinson, by the way, was not a paid employee of CPB. The CPB President is Pat Harrison.
