THE race in 2008
Call it harmonic convergence. The Times will have a brief item in its Insider column this week about rising murmuring on the Republican side of the aisle that Mike Huckabee will challenge Sen. Mark Pryor's re-election bid in 2008 if his presidential campaign falls short.
Now here's The Hill, no doubt relying on some of the same unnamed Republican sources, saying:
Though his long-shot presidential campaign is still in its early stages, some wish former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee would drop his national aspirations and return home to wage what they see as a vital campaign against Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) in 2008 instead.
Arkansas is often listed among the top Republican pickup opportunities in the country, but Huckabee is the only Republican who matches up to Pryor and there are no comparable alternatives, observers say.
Some points: 1) Why Arkansas is a top pickup opportunity given the waxing Asa Hutchinson took in the gubernatorial race and the national Republican shambles is beyond me. 2) The article throws in some other potential Republican candidates -- Jim Holt (please, yes); Chuck Banks; French Hill; John Boozman.
3) But back to the central premise: I spoke with the former governor yesterday (and a very pleasant conversation it was) and this subject happened to come up. He said what he has said on a number of occasions before -- he's not interested in running for Senate. Dawdling at the whim of a Senate majority leader, particularly one from the opposition party, would not be much fun for anyone, much less someone coming off 10 years of executive power.
And speaking of Arkansas: Politico considers what it will take to bring Arkansas back into the Democratic column in the 2008 presidential race.

Ah, the joys of living in Arkansas.
It would take someone like Huckabee to make Pryor look good, but what else are we likely to get?

If Huckabee falls out of the Presidential race early, then what other option has he got other than running for the Senate against Pryor? Janet's Red Cross paycheck will only go so far, you know.
Does he have a real shot at being the VP choice? Which leading Repub candidate would most benefit from his presence on the ticket for that magic Daily Double in the '08 race? Can and will local Repub leaders in the state apply some gentle, persuasive pressure to get Huckabuck to go heads up against a Pryor, especially when his local Dems are frowning a lot at his votes in the Senate?
Republicans only need one or two Senate changes in their favor to be back in control of their chamber. Could this enticement and possibility lure him into that race?
Finally, will someone in the Huckabee camp bitch-slap the man and say, "Fool, you aint got a chance at the job with the way you shoot off your mouth and with your phony record of accomplishments. Get out of the big national lake picture and go back to your little pond in Arkansas and be the big fish in that little puddle."

Someone get the committment papers ready. I'm sitting here assessing Senator Pryor versus a Senator Huckabuck.
Oh, nevermind -- taking the national picture into consideration tilts it back to Pryor. Barely. We need better choices.
Come on, Dems. You have to have some good candidates coming up. Please tell me you do.
Is term limits responsible for this dearth of good candidates? I can remember a young Pryor senior making his name in the state legislature and building on that.
No more scions, on the state or national level!
Someone around Charleston, check out the local legal eagle and see if he or she is a good prospect.

The Dems ought to thank the political gods everyday for Republicans like Huck. It's the only way a sorry excuse for a dem, like Mark Pryor, can look good...much less stay in office. (Yeah Mark...we DON'T NEED NO micromanaging of monkeyboy's war. He's doing such a bang-up job who in the hell would want to interfere with that perfection. Certainly not the guys/gals charged with oversight and the power to declare war. Oh wait...Nancy did call the White House and tell someone how disappointed she was in Cheney's bad words. Worthless bunch of nincompoops!)

Huck vs. Pryor? That would just suck. Unless there's a third candidate in the race or another dem could unseat Pryor, I will abstain from voting. I won't vote for Huck on general principle. He's too petty for national office for one, and I'm sure he would have lots of fun crushing federal hard drives and passing fascist legislation.
And speaking of fascist legislation, after voting to pass the Military Commisions Act of 2006 among other things Pryor will not get my vote ever again. The dems really need to find someone else to run in 08.
Is anyone else tired of voting for the lesser of two evils? Are there ANY good independent candidates out there? I guess the folks who would make the best candidates are smart enough to stay out of that business. If the fabric of the cosmos ripped and somehow I got elected to the US Senate, I don't thinkI would have the stomach for the DC lifestyle. That and the thought that I would probably have a lot of right wing nuts trying to assassinate me will keep me out of the race. Sorry guys.

Huck has no interest in the U.S. Senate. The rules for gifts are too stringent.
After his silly presidential thing peters out, he have to turn to talk radio and the speaker circuit. Can't see where there would be a lot of money in that.

Hmmmmmm....let's see.....having my genitals hacked off with a dull machete and stuffed down my throat or being drug naked behind a new Toyota all the way to Tupelo, Mississippi.....that's how it would feel to have to choose between Pryor or Huckabee. Tommy Robinson needs a job, why not him?
I believe that Mike Crushabee will not seek nor does he really expect to be nominated for P or VP in 2008. He's smart enough to know that Jesus H. Christ (R) doesn't have a chance in 2008 thanks to the criminal incompetence of George W. Bush.
I also think Hucks aim is not the US Senate or any other political office. His true aim is to keep filling that gigantic PAC so he can live like a king the rest of his life.
Actually conducting a real campaign would reduce the amount of money in his PAC, not increase it. It costs a fortune to run for national office and Huck ain't having any of that, when he can be a shadow candidate for cheap, still raise money from the Bible beaters and fly around the country having a damn good time.
His ungraceful exit from the governor's chair combined with his do-nothing record, combined with Wayne Dumond equals defeat if he makes a run at Pryor. Not to mention the stuff that would fall out of the cracks if any would be Ken Starr-Fitzgerald started digging into the shenanigans of his last couple years in office.
No sir....Huck will wind up his victory lap sometime in 2008, gathering up money, and free dinners. He'll be the honored speaker at little wingnut parties and gather up board memberships ala A_a the Hutch and then retire to the state with the least taxes and make a little money on the side attending any event that promises a Love Offering.
For the next year our best bet would be to keep an eye open for a real Democrat who could beat Pryor and reclaim what is now the Joe Lieberman Memorial Arkansas Senate seat. It was a hard job replacing Fulbright and Bumpers, so hard we haven't successfully done it yet.
The next person you speak to today would probably do us a much better job in Washington than Mark Pryor. Take a minute and invite them to consider running in 2008. The only direction we can go is up.

Huckabee would be the rare Republican senatorial candidate forced to run to the left of his Democratic opponent. Huckabee can't outflank Pryor on the right.
If such a race happened, the only thing that would tilt me to Pryor would be maintaining Democratic control of Senate. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to vote for Huckabee based solely upon the fact that he accomplished his political career without the benefit of riding his daddy's coattails. Mark Pryor is George W. Bush with a less successful father.
