Air scare
Did you see this about a landing gear problem on a private aircraft that Houston Nutt was using to take himself and his mother to see his brother coach a basketball game?

What amazed me is that they got out of the crashed plane, found another one, and flew on in time to make it to the basketball game.
I know the old advice is to get right back on the horse that threw you, but I suspect I'd have ended up skipping that basketball game.

A scientifically-trained monitor whose job was visiting research sites all over the country once confided to me that he was worried that all the flying he did was increasing the probability that one day he would be aboard a plane that crashed.
I reminded him that, as a scientist, he should know better. Sure, boarding a plane is a roll of the dice, but the outcome of any roll of dice is not influenced by the results of previous rolls. Right?
Still, it wasn't long before he moved to a position that required less air time.
I imagine arrangements for Houston's second plane were already made in the air on the way back to Fayetteville. The mishap on the ground there was minor, and Houston made a typical decision to carry on with his plan to cheer his brother's team. I don't know Mama Nutt, but her decision to continue the trip too doesn't surprise me much.

It would be a tragedy to lose an important Arkansan, a mother.

Any information on who owned the said plane?
ARK. BLOG: I've asked that question.

Less Smart,
Thank you for the free plug. I guess that you are calendar-impaired, but the election year is over. The Green party has several more county chapters, a change in the election laws, a candidate for the 2008 Senatorial campaign, and candidates for election in many counties. It takes a while to build a new party, especially one that doesn't sell itself to the highest bidder. I doubt that YOU are interested, but here is our web site:

I have to admit that my posting in this subject was somewhat of a drive-by commentary on how fixated even the ArkTimes is upon the irrelevant machinations of assoletics in Arkansas. I prefer the real world.

Pardon the derail, but -- widj, wouldn't it be more like playing the lottery, where buying 500 tickets doesn't increase the odds of any one ticket winning, but does increase the odds that you're holding the one that wins? If say five planes are going to crash in a given length of time, probability-speaking, aren't you more likely to be on one of those five if you fly 100 times during that time period rather than three?

If you choose to travel on a twin-engine aircraft, you double your chances of having an engine failure.

I certainly hope that Houston paid his own way for use of the plane, and didn't stick it to the taxpayers. When Houston leaves, you can bet thatt all hard drives will be shredded.
