Any kind of prayer?

In just a few minutes, the House Education Committee will hear Rep. Eric Harris' bid to reinstitute theocracy when it hears HB 2445. The Republican from Lowell, who believes Christians should run the nation, wants to keep the state education department from interfering "with student led and student initiated prayer at public school functions." The bill would allow prayer at all functions, but didn't specify what kinds of prayer should be allowed. We're guessing prayers to Zeus are out.

The committee is to meet 15 minutes after House adjournment.

Strange. Apparently the man doesn't know prayer is allowed at all functions now. They just have to be student initiated and not government initiated. Once ignorance gets started it has no bounds, according to one wag.

Would that one of those worthies down there attached an amendment ordering that Mr. Harris and his church are responsible for any and all legal bills that accrue from defending this stinking pile of crap.

Sadly, plump Eric likely knows. He's a CPA thus not entirely ignorant, perhaps
strongly biased but should know better. A fellow extreme Republican has the Senate seat wrapped up for two terms. Unless Eric changes locales in Benton County I cannot imagine why his is feeding on this peice of dead tissue. They just want the state, as 70% remarked, to pick up the tab for yet another losing lawsuit.

Will they also pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster? May the noodly appendage touch all of them downtown, in order that they see what is best for everyone, not just the majority, but everyone. Ramen.

PS this sounds like as big a time and money waster as the apostrophe bill.

Now that you mention it D Thomas
little Eric's bill will create real havoc for schools in our ever controversial Springdale district:

In addition to hosting 57 Varieties of Baptist and 13 other Protestant flavors plus Catholics,
Springdale is home to a diverse gathering of religions.
There are two flavors of Bhuddism to chose from , each with thier own temples, (imagine an hour of loud chanting during student council meeting, basketball games);
We have Huna religion which some Marshallese practice;
There's official Neopaganism and Eco-Pagans to boot;
Lets not forget the oldest of all earthly religions, Animism, practiced by some of our new Asiatics who hope to make their fortunes sexing and growing chickens.
Wouldn't it be wonderful for all of them to petition the schools for access. Way to go Eric ! I'll vote for graduation invocations to be done via Catholicism in high Latin.

I have no problem as long as the prayer is in the tradition of Liberation Theology and holds public officials accountable for catastrophic outcomes of bad decisions such as the Iraq war and Katrina response. And, oh yes, the Dumas tornado response. Amen.

Think the Hon. Rep. Harris would be inclined to interfere if the "student-led" prayer began: "There is one God, his name is Allah, and Muhammad is his Prophet"?

Excellent posts! Religion don't hurt me none and my kids are too bright to go all glassy-eyed on me. But as several have pointed out there are too many brands of religion out there and if you want to see a real holy war, let the Baptist and the Buddhist start knocking heads.

The only thing that bothers a Bible thumper more than someone like me, is someone with a shaved head dressed in a robe wanting to do a little chanting in public school. They all believe they serve the 1 true religion and thems fighting words to the rest.

Like I've said before, Arkansas is lousy with churches, it's not like they need a new place to pray. It's simply a matter of imposing their will over all others.

Fort Baptist will be afire before the Bible thumpers give up on forcing a Bible class in our public schools. The large numbers that showed up at the last school board meeting looked and acted like the cast from Deliverance.

We'll likely never know peace again. Thanks Jesus, you big troublemaker.....

Oh I can see it now, hear it now, and when the breeze goes away I can smell it now.

PastoRonnie Floyd's series on the evils of Bhuddism, Paganism, Hmong and Huna.
Are they against God's Plan for All Men? Tune in Sunday morning at 10:30 to hear this manofgod deliver the truth regarding these threats in our Community.

Wait wait.....we're not into worshiping anything over here...but will this bill open the door to worshiping and praying to Satan in the classroom? Now that would be worth selling tickets to. And what about all our Wiccan friends?

We could turn the school day into a Prayer Carnival! Could a devil worshiper bring cow's blood to school to use in their ritual? What about praying for sex? Mats facing Mecca? What about Fillipino floggers, very popular around Easter ya know. And of course my favorite, Snake Handlers!

Oh great, more praying to the Invisible Cloud Being.

Now THATS education!

Rock Central I can see you missed those 70s late TV station sign offs, featuring the Prayer of Flight which ends with a soaring shot of a fighter jet roaring into the Sun and deep commentators voice saying they can fly so high and see the Face of God, patriotic music plays. See God is not invisible if you're flying a $10 million dollar U.S jet fighter.

This is one of the quotes on my Google homepage today. I think it fits this thread nicely.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.
- Philip K. Dick

I missed within your litany, any Jews. They know where they are not wanted. With legislators like little Eric bean counter, that place is not the Promised Land.
